    I use an M1 VInL, Equally flexible and compact. Works brilliantly with the 2M Black in the Transcriptor/SME and the AT-OC9 in the Gyro/HRS100mcs. Very, very happy with the sound.

    Thank you so so much had my eyes on M6X phono for while wish to partner with my Project Extension 10 coincidentally a Groovy 8 in your review and the XLR connection no problem as project make a balanced XLR lead that plugs directly in the turntable arm bit of a no brainer then thanks again Paul for excellent as is reviews for the record currently using quintet bronze so aiming for cadenza bronze long term 😮

    Grate review Paul, I don't care for the tiny writing (display) though, short sighted (me) and astigmatism aren't a good combination especially in low light, but the amplifier having balanced inputs is good, I have a Cambridge Azur 851C pre amp and 851w power amp the pre has balanced inputs and after your review I am interested in their posible use, yes I'm aware that what the M6x does will be different to what my amp can do, the reason I haven't used balanced so far is because before using the amp I looked through the user manual and saw mention that balanced and unbalanced (RCA) can't be used at the same time and so never went any further, but after thinking about it I'm not sure if I understand this correctly, it seems odd to build an amp with so many inputs to then only be able to use 2 :/

    I'm confused - how can this phono pre not include any amplification options? What if you're using a low output MC vs high output MC vs high output MM? One amplification does not fit all

  • @llee4225

    It is good that it has all the input configuration but does it save the settings for each input selected or does one have to readjust when selecting different inputs? Ideally it would save different setting for each input as most likely it would be for different cartridges.

    Hi there Paul. I have just purchased (coming in a few days) this phono stage based on a few reviews and giving much weight to your video review. It will replace a Musical Fidelity M1-Vinl. My system does not have any balanced input capability so I plan on using the single ended connections. Based on your delight with the balanced output I would love to use that connection to my preamplifier. Are there any adapter cables or plugs that will allow me to use that output from the M6x? Would I be able to appreciate the benefits you were so pleased with, if such a cable were available? Also do you think I should hear a big difference with this vs my old M1-Vinl? Thanks Steve in Dallas TX

    Given the lack of gain settings, apart from the one 6db boost selector, does it internally (automatically) adjust gain to a specified output level?

  • @tonyjedioftheforest1364

    What a great idea to have several inputs, I use 2 turntables so need 2 phono amps. The 1st is my better one a Linn LP12/Roksan Nima/Linn Adikt and the second a more budget Revolver/Ittok/K9 with At95C conical stylus for my knackered 2nd hand records. I am considering a 3rd with dedicated mono cartridge that will connect direct to my amps phono input. A question, perhaps a good one for your video news. I don’t want to spend a lot on this mono set up as I only have a couple of dozen mono records but that is increasing now I am helping one of my friends with a 1960’s radio show.
    I realise the cartridge needs to be a genuine mono so was thinking of the AT610 mono. I understand the more budget VM95 mono is not a true mono cartridge, I could just use the mono 95 stylus on my K9 but was fancying a dedicated set up. Unsure of Regas 78 cartridge as I would assume it has a thick stylus to suit 78 records.
    As for the turntable I am open to suggestions. I have thought of the Rega P1, AT120XUSB or Project Debut DC. I think the AT 120 would be the most versatile having an interchangeable head shell but would assume that the Rega would sound better but I am unsure if you can adjust the tracking weight to accommodate other cartridges. As I said don’t really want to spend a lot due to my mono collection size so was thinking of up to £500. Your input would be most appreciated.

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you've basically thought this one through, Tony. I'd go for the Debut/Audio-Technica combo as a good basic option. Incidentally, true, ground-up mono carts are rare because they are very expensive to build and most brands can't justify the expense. Thus most mono carts on the market are repurposed stereo designs, to cut costs. The cheapest model I know is the Japanese Miyajima Kotetu (£500+). A cart I reviewed a while back. I have the company's Zero as I have a healthy mono collection.

      @@TheAudiophileMan thank you Paul your advice is most appreciated, I just needed to ask as I sometimes overthink things. The Pro-Ject and AT it will be. Can I ask though as the Project comes with the 2M Red pre fitted do you think that I will have to adjust the arm height. I intend to buy the turntable from Cheshire Audio as I watch his TH-cam channel and it would be nice to give Phil my custom but he doesn’t list the AT610 mono cartridge on his website so I may have to do that myself.

    What does it take to convert a turntable to balanced output?
    How does that compare with the moon 110 you reviewed awhile ago?

  • @mrkitewine7700
    @mrkitewine7700 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m assuming the unit has a memory to store the MM/MC and loading options for each input. Eg if you switch between turntables, one with MC and the other with MM then does the unit remember that input 1 was MC and input 2 was MM and each with the relevant loading value?

    • @classicrock7890
      @classicrock7890 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It remembers the settings even if it is powered down. I have the M6 (non X version).

  • @TheNorliss
    @TheNorliss ปีที่แล้ว

    Good that they give you loading options for both MM and MC carts but not for gain aside from that +6dB boost. You didn't mention the default gain levels and there is no mention of these in Musical Fidelity's product info sheet nor manual. Given the pretty wide range of outputs between different carts this would seem to be a significant failing to me.

    • @classicrock7890
      @classicrock7890 ปีที่แล้ว

      They use a different format but convert to 42dB MM and 62dB MC. Based on my older M6 vinyl, MC of 0.3 mV output plus are fine using balanced which gives higher output. Might be partly why Paul preferred it. Would suggest 0.5 mV plus cartridge with single ended. This will depend on your amp to some degree. Lower will require +6dB but doesn't sound as good with this engaged. I've only tried AT MMs and plenty of gain for these without 6db boost. For finer differences in gain suggest use your volume knob.

    Hey Paul, I was looking at this phono-stage! Seems very flexible at this price. Not sure if you mention it, but is this a "fully balanced" design?
    A lot of other brands really market that feature, but MF doesn't though they mention 'fully discrete.' Does that mean the same thing?

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Discrete refers to how the innards are put together but yes, it can be fully balanced. It can go either way. Depends on the kit you own really. It’s quite flexible.

    What does “sense of pace” mean?

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  ปีที่แล้ว

      If, for example, bass sounds a bit boomy or bloated then sometimes it hangs around too long and drowns the midrange and treble. The effect is almost like the music slowing down as it's constantly trying to recover. If bass is better focused, tighter in effect, then the impression to the ear is that the music trips along with pace. There's variations on that but that's basically it.

  • @1x3dil

    Sorry Paul but I’m confused as usual , you’re turntable is not balanced and the Rega p3 isn’t . So which bit of the setup is , most amps aren’t as in my audio lab 6000 . So please explain to a rather slow on the uptake follower of your grate channel . Best wishes and kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem. As I mentioned in the vid, I currently don’t have a balanced turntable so cannot review this part of the phono amp. So I will have to defer this part of the sound test. I hope to review a balanced turntable in the future though, hopefully from Pro-Ject. If/when that occurs then I’ll use this MF phono amp. That is, at that point I will be able to plug a balanced turntable (the forthcoming Pro-Ject) into this MF amp’s balanced inputs.
      During this review, I reviewed music in single-ended output mode and then later in balanced output mode using my own main amp. See the Description for chapter headings for those. Give me a shout if I'm still confusing you and I'll give it another go.

    Really no excuse for the poor single ended performance (I’m assuming that Paul knows that the difference does not lie somewhere else in his system), especially at this price point. Why not leave it out or clearly state that it’s a 2. class citizen?

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't say single-ended was "poor" or second class anything. You said that. I said it wasn't strictly neutral/balanced and if you're firm on those matters then this point...matters. I also noted the positives from single-ended mode and there are some. This is because I am meticulous in terms of balanced play (but hey, that's me, others might not be so scrupulous - again, know your critic and take that into account). If you're OCD in terms of sonic neutrality then balanced is the way to go, though.

    • @RigVader
      @RigVader ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAudiophileMan I have no love for neutrality (you said that, not me 🤭), but I am adverse to upper mid forward, solid state, digital sounding. Thanks for providing additional perspective on you review, I read it as passing more of a value judgement. While I appreciate a component can be built to favor a topology, I would personally not want to first balance my system with a component, then to have it changes character to large degree when used balanced. Maybe more common that I think, I have certainly see it go the other way (more edgy/brighter using a balanced connection)
