    Great video! Over the weekend I decided to check PAR over my 180g. Well.... I had a few spots with 800-1000PAR. Some sps were fine with it, and some always looked a little off, now I know why. I reduced my kessils to 70% and spread them around more. So check your par and stop guessing. It is as important as knowing your alk, ca, and mag.

    True about the LFS, when I first got back into the hobby, I made my rounds to all the LFS. You can see the new ones have tons of frags and equipment and are super organized and clean and bright, and I found was cheaper in a lot of things than some of these online places. The old ones are still dark and messy and the livestock doesn't look so healthy but people still prefer going to the LFS first.

    I got the Seneye monitor and was shocked that the $29 light I have on one of my tanks (Aquatop Nano LED) puts out insane PAR levels. 900 up top and 450 on the sand bed at highest setting. My other lights are just what I expected but for some reason that supposedly 11 watt light is way more powerful than my other LED lights.

    Just purchased the 25 lagoon and I'm of course trying to decide on the million dollar question: what lighting to use. Since it is such a uniquely shaped tank this makes things more complicated? Maybe? So I guess my question to you would be, do you think 2 AI Primes would be strong enough to grow SPS?

    • @BahamaLlamaCoral
      @BahamaLlamaCoral  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the lagoon? Yes. 2 would be plenty for a lagoon. SPS in a small tank is gonna be more about keeping parameters steady and less about light. I have lots of acro's under primes!

    Super awesome video
    Where have BRS "verified" that SPS are good between 200 and 350? I know they say that all the time and maybe that is what WWC say but Mike Palleta recently said he interviewed the top 20 SPS reefers and all of them had PAR over 400 I think. Battlecorals and Bil from Epic Aquaculture (recently on ReefBum) also talk about needing more PAR. Even Dana Riddle went and sampled PAR in a bunch of tanks for different Acros and many are under 200 but also there are a few over even 600 PAR. Coral Eurphoria also has a great PAR episode and he was hitting mostly 500-600.
    Now I know BRS says that each time but I cannot recall an experiment where they actually worked that out.
    I'm not saying BRS is wrong but I would rather listen to the best acro growers on that. I think even Telegram has his homewrecker under 700PAR.
    BRS is awesome but I think they have been wrong on a lot of things. Sorry for the rant but I feel like if BRS says something everyone instantly takes it as fact. I hope this is taken the right way Remi because I love your vids mate

    • @telegraham
      @telegraham 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most of my SPS live at 200-350, so personal experience suggests those numbers work. I have three pieces at 450ish, but they are the test corals (Dead Disney, blue tenuis and an unnamed acro). I know skilled reefers who run higher PAR than me, but their colors are no better. My personal opinion is that it comes down to specific tanks. I can color up most anything at 300PAR, which is where my Home Wrecker lives, and a Disney in a stable system will grow well at 100PAR. It’ll just be green. As with most anything reefing related, YMMV, but those are solid any budget PAR targets.

      @sunnygoold9449 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@telegraham Thanks Jim ;) Yeah after watching this I think I will try to hit those solid PAR numbers ;) Maybe I will scale up from there. I am also going to get that 470nm light - probably order tonight ;)
      After this I am also trying to borrow a PAR meter. I would get the Seneye but I'm on the Beta Tester list for the Seneye Coral and I'm really hanging for that (although I think it will be another 6 months;)

      @BahamaLlamaCoral  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank for jumping in here Jim. I know I'm not a top 20 sps reefer so I won't be venturing past 350 for now. That, and I just have too many other species in the frag tank. I need separate systems...bummer...more tanks. 😂 Thanks for the watch Sunny!

      Bahama Llama Coral After watching some zoa vids of yours I was inspired to use some extra covid cash on buying a 500 dollar single polyp of Grand Master Krakatoa from unique corals, my tank has a zoa colony that is doing great. I would hope to frag it in the future. Is this a terrible idea? Is there a high end zoa that may take off worth “investing” in or am I dumb?

      Mesh probably wouldn't affect it as much as a flat piece of acrylic. Anything you put between the light and the coral will affect par in some way.

    Shouldn’t you do a par reading with the flow on for a more real life reading? I did mine and was getting 375 with flow off and an average of 320 with flow on.

    • @BahamaLlamaCoral
      @BahamaLlamaCoral  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. I was told to perform the measurements with flow off...however, I thought afterward about how the light is always traveling through turbulent water. Everything I've seen is back and forth with opinions...typical forum stuff...some say it doesn't matter either way, the numbers won't be too different. However, that's not true in your case.
