  • “I remember seeing the ‘Galloping Gertie’ Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse in a Physics class in high school,” Lucy Walker told The Atlantic, “and the surprising image of something as sturdy and robust-looking as a mighty bridge twisting and twirling like rope-and ultimately snapping-has always stayed with me.”
    In 2017, Walker, an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, was asked to make a short film inspired by the theme of “bridges” for the annual TEDWomen conference. “One of the first things I always do when approaching a subject is to think about poetry on similar themes,” Walker said. Immediately, she called to mind Kate Rushin’s “The Bridge Poem." Read more: www.theatlantic.com/video/ind...
    "Bridge Poem" was directed by Lucy Walker. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries from independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.

      It's basically wind turbulence causing the bridge to oscillate first slowly then more agressively as the turbulence increases. Look up Tacoma bridge shedding votticies.

    • @GH-oi2jf
      @GH-oi2jf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      joseph o - Aerodynamic forces. The bridge was too light and limber to resist. Once a motion started in one of the normal modes, a steady wind added energy through vortex shedding, so the oscillation was self-reinforced. The twisting mode may have been initiated when one of the stays added to try to control the motion shifted or broke, creating an asymmetry. The twisting mode destroyed the bridge.

      Instead you got a arrogant pretentious gas bag reading of a poem that should have been read to a bunch of deluded clowns living in their parents' basement raging against the machine, pissing and whining about their perceived spoon fed thoughts of injustices in society.

      But,Wow....Look at the wonderful and insightful poem that actually goes right along with this. Now, We all can understand that there was someone that worked on the design and construction of this bridge that said it won't work. But nobody wanted to recognize his/her voice. It's a perfect example of how nobody listened and it led to disaster.

    I thought this would be a mini documentary about the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Don't normally like modern poetry. I find (the ones I have come across) to be pretentious at the best of times. At its worst it feels like wading through treacle.
    I enjoyed this. I even listened to it twice . One line in the poem that stuck with me... and not well, was "I'm Sick of being the sole Black friend to 34 individual white people (folks)" She says "folks" but the real poem says "people"
    Anyway this sounds like its HER issue. Not sure what any of the 34 can do about it.
    Although I don't really care... who does? DOWN WITH WHITEY. Fight the powder, DAMN THE MAN, Do the do.

      these could be an answer, alone or a part of several combined factors;
      The total structure of many parts put togethet have a natural frequency. This natural frequency unfortunately is equal in most of the time to the natural freq. of the wind that is passing the bridge...... at these particular time. ......and long enough ( having equal freq.). Continuation of these same freq. with time cousing the bridge to swing and waves as of it was the wind it self or to embody the wind. What is seen actually is the wind, thr bridge just happen to be there.
      Take an analog as in some asian and south american traditions; a medicine man being controlled by Ruah ( spirit or wind in hebrew).
      So the wind coused the structure to destroy itsef........... by benedictus.

      @@helengeorgia2706 many thanks for attempting to help educate those who truly believe you tube is a substitute for acquiring knowledge from a reputable source.
      The catastrophic vibration caused by the unique combination of subtle movement of a bridge in this case, by wind, traffic etc.
      if not negated by the correct reinforcement will tear apart the "strongest" structures with easy.
      The poem's a prefect example of that for people who don't actually want a physics lesson, but to see the same passing breeze emotionally can be just as devastating to a person's mind.

    As a liberal who likely has all the same political and social justice beliefs as the speaker, I find her message naively unrealistic and insidiously nativist. Her idea that she should get rid of bridges to the outside world is promoting the idea that bubbles need to be re-enforced and she plans on disengaging from the rest of the world. That is the same dangerous sort of thinking as the alt-right engages and creates the extreme partisan climate of today. This is an incredibly negative video that promotes immaturity and selfishness over rational dialogue.

    • @TheLoonert
      @TheLoonert 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      She is not destroying her connection to others in the world. She's arguing that she will not be used as a tool for others, "bridging" the gap between a person and his or her ideals. If there is any bridge that she wants to construct, it is one of self-actualization "to [her] own true self."
      Nothing about this poem is about disengaging communicatively. Nothing about this poem is political. Nothing about this poem is "naively unrealistic" or "insidiously nativist".

    • @mansoortanweer
      @mansoortanweer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      She is absolutely disengaging communicatively when she says "I will not be your translator." We are living in a world where bubbles are getting far more reinforced and bridges, like the video illustrates, are collapsing more and more. You can act as a bridge to others while still self-actualizing. That is why this is insidiously nativistic. It echoes "america first" style thinking. This poem is promoting selfishness and immaturity. We need more people who can communicate between two ideologies and shrink the influence of bubbles.

    • @TheLoonert
      @TheLoonert 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      She doesn't want to be the go-between for other people to communicate. When she says she doesn't want to be a translator, it is because she doesn't want to be used as a replacement for open and honest dialogue. She herself doesn't need a bridge; in this sense, she is the bridge. Yes, you can fault her for not wanting to be the go-between, but ultimately she does this because she needs to understand herself.
      Though I agree with how isolation and naivete made Trump's victory a reality, I still believe that this is a poem about self-actualization, mainly because of the poem's last line, "I must be a bridge to nowhere by my true self." Because she has been used as a bridge for others, she has never had the opportunity to understand and solidify her own beliefs.
