The Grimm brothers collected that version, and changed it to the one they're known for ("Aschenputtel"). Quite a good number of stories the brothers are known for actually come from Charles Perrault, and some from other sources. In fact, the story of Cinderella has been around even before Charles Perrault (some say even in the B.C. era), with different versions across the world. So, yeah, even though the Grimm brothers didn't create the story, it became popular due to them (and Disney while we're at it).
