It is wrong to compare today's strongest chess players with chess players of the 2nd half of the 20th century. Back then there were undoubtedly more strong chess players and the competition was much higher. There was a chess renaissance, but now chess has turned into a mechanical game.
Seeing Anand re-appear in the top ten in his fifties is amazing. I really admire his tenacity and he is also a great human being and now he is leading a whole new generation of Indian talent to the top.
Magnus 2870 and next is 2796 with 74 gap rating against average of 2770 rating players is INSANEEEEEEEEEEE. THIS IS INSANE! I hope everyone can fathom how insane this feat is. The inflation of rating happened in 1970s-1990s mostly during fischer's era because fide didnt have the rules that will accurately rate every player so it happened that fischer is 2800+ while the rest of the field is 2700 in average. Everyone should know that the rules of fide in chess rating has been evolving to avoid inflation and in Magnus' case, it's harder to climb in this era and almost impossible to cross 2900. Imagine he played 125 games of unbeaten streak started from july 2018 until the end of october 2020 and only gained +21 rating, from 2842 - 2863 which is absurd.
@@adamsmith4813 However, these guys were not born in that time. This is result of uzbek cognitive ability. You know or donʼt know Uzbekistan is homeland for great people which accomplished unbelievable things for human beings and the world. Such as Al Farabi,Al Beruni, Avicenna.
Magnus's domination is just the greatest of all time, in this day and age where any chess player (including myself) has access to the strongest engines (Stockfish 17 now). Because of this we're basically experiencing rating deflation, where a 2500 is still insanely strong compared to super GMs, the best example is in the 45th Olympiad where we saw super GMs having completely lost positions against players who are lower rated by hundreds of points. Now even if you're Magnus and play a 2500, you have to take massive risks and play "bad" openings to look for winning chances, and if you lose you're basically -8 for rating. And if you play real openings, your 2500 opponent also knows theory 30 moves deep so good luck beating an engine. Vishy's longevity is very much respected, but at this modern age you have to constantly look for new opening ideas if you don't want to lose/draw every game, and this is much more taxing compared to back then, that's why players now quit classical chess earlier than in let's say Kasparov's era. There was a Rapid game that I saw Arjun play, he basically played 30 moves instantly because of preparation that he memorized at home, when he started thinking he was already in a winning endgame (Rook vs Minor piece) so he just had to convert it into a win.
I think in the next 5 years someone might dethrone him, if not less - given the fact Magnus has simply stopped taking chess (classical in that) less seriously.
What this shows is the automatic rating inflation inherent in the ELO system. It's much harder to increase your rating if all the players you are playing are rated 100 points below you. Take Micky Adams, a fine English player. His peak rating was very close to Bobby Fischer's peak rating. How many of you would bet on Adams beating Fischer in a match if they met at their peak?

So Bobby reached 2780 in 1973 and now almost after 5 decades there are only 5 player above that rating , and people still rate magnus better than him.
