  • Dr. Jaya Prakash Narayan, the chief guest at the National Conference on Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Update in 2023, hosted by the Institute of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Adiposity (IDEA) clinics, shared insightful reflections on healthcare. He emphasized that a doctor's role should extend beyond medical care and urged them to become champions of healthcare. Dr. Narayan expressed gratitude to doctors who studied abroad and implemented their practices in India, enabling the delivery of quality care at a low cost.
The speech began with praise for India's achievements in providing low-cost vaccines, medicines, and other healthcare services. Dr. Narayan explained why spending higher amounts on Health Care by governments is not cost effective citing the United States example. Developed countries like the United States, which spend significant amounts on healthcare but yield comparatively poor outcomes. He highlighted the need for India to prioritize primary care and outpatient care, deemphasizing hospitalization.
One of the key points Dr. Narayan made was the importance of reducing out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare, which he believed could help alleviate poverty. He cited the alarming statistic of 60 million people falling into poverty each year in India. He argued that the Indian government does not need to allocate 9%-10% of GDP to healthcare, an almost impossible task, but suggested that spending just one percent more of GDP could significantly reduce mortality and morbidity rates. Dr. Narayan emphasized the challenges faced by primary healthcare in India and advocated for studying primary healthcare models from different countries and adapting them to the Indian context.
Also, he highlighted the potential of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) in the healthcare sector, encouraging smart utilization of such investments to leverage India's healthcare system's strengths. Dr. Narayan discussed the ripple effect of healthcare investments on employment generation. He also acknowledged the growing mistrust between patients and the public, attributing it partially to doctors' restricted focus on hospitals and a microscopic view of patients. Despite this, he commended doctors for their dedicated work and the increase in life expectancy. He expressed optimism that India, with its low-cost approach and existing strengths, could deliver high-quality healthcare and emphasized the need for honest, intelligent thinking and the application of knowledge and best practices. Dr. Narayan concluded by suggesting that brainstorming sessions like the conference would facilitate faster and better achievements in affordable and accessible healthcare in India.
Overall, Dr. JP Narayan's speech provided a compelling analysis of the state of healthcare in India, supported by facts and figures. His arguments underscored the potential of India's healthcare system to deliver quality care at a low cost. He called for a shift towards primary care, reduction of out-of-pocket expenses, and the intelligent utilization of investments to strengthen the healthcare sector.
