I use DAS clay quite often and have found that acrylic paint can be fairly easily scratched through once the piece is
dry and completed. So I've started to use acrylic floor wax as my wetting agent as I work, instead of water. I've even
made a slip with the floor wax and it seems to work just fine, giving quite a bit more strength to the piece.
The floor wax is much more fluid or watery than any acrylic medium I could find and seems to make the
outer skin of the piece better able to accept a layer of acrylic paint. In fact, before the coat of paint, I
generally coat the piece completely with the floor wax. Once dry, the outer layer is more
resistant to scratching.
This sounds great, thank you for sharing. Could you put the floor wax on top of the acrylic paint? I love discovering new ways and using things, designed for other purposes ❤️
So you first apply coat of acrylic floor wax , let it dry and paint on it..isn't it?

Try alcohol activated paint...once the alcohol has evaporated, all that's left is the pigment.

I learned today not to try to speed drying by using a heat gun. I started experimenting with air dry clay in my stainless steel tumbler designs. The first project had a lot of cracking & I was constantly adding clay along with a bit of water to smooth things out. Despite the fall backs the project was successful. Now, I am on my second project with the clay and tried speed up the dry time a little. While I was attempting to dry it with the heat a piece of clay literally popped off the project like popping corn. It scared me a little when it happened & of course had a laugh afterwards 😂. I am guessing that there was air trapped in the clay that expanded to cause that reaction from the heat gun. I definitely try your tips out next.
Yes slow drying air dry clay is always best, the metal will have started to really heat up too, causing even more heat, glad you’re ok and enjoying the process, thanks for watching

@@D0MINAD0MINATRIX DAS clay I find to be strong but to protect it and give it extra strength yes add a varnish or lacquer. People who live in hot climates find that the clay dries too quick which can make the clay crack, the damp cloth is to slow down the drying time, but not a necessary step, here in the UK I do not need to. Thank you so much for your extremely helpful video. I tried the daz clay to make flowers but I couldn’t roll it out as thin as I wanted. Love your ideas re more careful drying out. My grandkids had a ball with Christmas cutters and had great results but if I’m making things for myself I want them to be really smooth but find that difficult. Also how do you store it to stop it drying out? Your creations are stunning. Thanks so much. I would like to see you do a video on using air dry clay in moulds. Have you ever done any? I bought some air dry paper clay and some silicon molds and want to decorate some tin cans as planters for my veranda this summer.
Sounds like a lovely project you have there. I’ve not used moulds before, I like mine to be completely bespoke, but have seen moulds work great for air dry clay
Silicone is non-stick in contact with so many materials, I think you should have no problem using a silicone mold!
If you fear ruining the mold, do a test first. Maybe pressing a little piece of clay somewhere in the outside of the mold, leaving it to dry and seeing if it comes out easily.
Silicone molds work fine with biscuit clay and even resin, so I think it should be fine.
Ty ,So much for all the informative videos and you have such a soothing voice I just had to say that. But I do have a question I bought my clay before doing enough research so I bought the big tub of crayola and it was so hard not dried out just to hard to work with well I’ve added water and I think I might have added a bit to much so what I would like to know is what is the perfect texture and is there any little test? I’m letting it dry now but last night I made a little bowl and it was sticking to my Matt so I assume it’s still too wet please help and Ty in advance. Oh and I am going to attempt to make your angel wings for Xmas if my clay dries out before then 😂.
Thank you.I’ve not tried crayola but I’d be interested to test it as many people say the. Same thing, but then other TH-cam crafters do use it! If you knead it well with wet hands it really should come together, but as you say you’ve already added water. If you are finding it’s sticking to you board then next time use a piece of wax paper under it when drying. How is it drying now? Best of luck with the angel wings, definitely put something under them when drying 😊❤️
Once I saw a beautiful flower bouquet made of clay and I wanted to buy it. The price was outrageous, haha. So I came home, bought a packet of clay and made two bouquets myself. I painted them with watercolours and they're still on my shelves. But I didn't know all the things you are saying here. I'll try again, this is beautiful.
This is fantastic, and totally me too...answer to everything...but i can just make one 💗 Sounds like you did a great job, I did this video for beginners who i got many many questions from asking if it's worth making anything from air dry clay because they think it will just break too easily, if you have a been there done it, I think you did what you felt was right and it worked so you're winning 💗
@@RedRockingBird Oh, it wasn't difficult at all. The flowers are flat shapes, cut from clay sheets, glued to wooden sticks and decorated with bast fibre and little clay leaves. You can easily make a hundred of those, but I made about twenty. :) Now I know I have to pay attention to drying, I didn't know why clay cracks so easily. Thank you!

So acrylic gel medium is often mixed with acrylic paint to increase viscosity and transparency, thanks for watching, have fun creating, maybe see what else you have available to you

I just watched your other video where you made your own air dry clay with Corn Starch and PVC glue. Is that recipe as firm as the DAS air dry clay? Are they equally dense? Do you have any type of video where you compare the two? I would like to strart with making my own clay and try making a palette. I have a UV Resin light and resin to waterproof it. I am wondering if making my own clay for this would work. Sorry for all the questions. Thank you for your video.
The homemade clay is stronger than DAS and I must test it again as a palette, you wouldn’t need anything as strong as resin on this unless you like the finished effect. With the homemade clay I would use the press technique as the texture is different to DAS, thanks and best of luck 😊🎨

most craft varnishes/lacquers work well, they just need very this coats and plenty of drying time between, hope that helps. Thank you 😊
Can you please tell me how you prevent the pieces curling up when drying. Thank you for your well explained videos.
Slow drying and turn them regularly, if you find they start to curl you can place a light plank of wood or book on them to keep them down, but I fin when I dry them slow on my smooth tiles they don't curl and then lift off the tile when fully dry. Hope this helps. Thanks

Hi Sarah, I'm new to your channel stumbled on it accidentally (with your video for 'can adc hold water') that made me take a look at your playlist, hence being here. I've done a few things now with clay, last year I tried to make a coaster for my hubbys anniversary prezzy (it was just about presentable 🙀😹) but I've gone on to make mushroom tealights fairy houses. I even progressed to trying to make homemade clay, but I'm not convinced I am doing it right... as it turns into like pancake batter before I have to add extra flour, or leave out a lot of water. But I do like the elasticity of the homemade clay compared to das, especially for the houses. I am going to go from here and watch a few of your other videos, I liked to see how you make your clay (as im sure it is with less ingredients) and then there's the slip video I just kept putting my dried up bits in water and mixing then using that as slip, i've no idea if that was right or wrong.

I have a question if I make my project and where is clay left what I will use later how to keep it from drying out
If you have some left over wrap it tightly in the packet it came from and then put it in another bag or airtight container till you want to use it again 😊
Oh, that is great advice, thank you so much! I have one problem I need to solve rather quickly, and that is about the stability of a figurine. I am working with air dry clay for the first time, using DAS as well, and of course I´m going in at the deep end making a big (!) Donald Duck figurine, about 50 cm high, that should be about 20 inches.
I made a full body armature out of cardboard and Paper (so that I would need only one layer of DAS to cover the figurine, a layer of 1 or 1,5 cm should be enough) and built him a "wire belt" with wire legs, on which I put the body, so to speak, but the wire is almost to weak to carry even the paper figurine. I wonder now if the DAS will hold the weight of the whole thing once it is covered in it. I´m so worried he will just do the splits and the legs will spread outwards and break under the weight. I need to make the bottom part stronger. So now I´m wondering if it could help to mix PVA and DAS for the belly ( I heard PVA makes DAS more stable) and legs so that the "underpart" will be hopefully be strong enought to carry the entire body. What do you think? Or might lacquer help? So first sealant (which one? Sorry, I´m in Germany), then acrylic paint, then lacquer? Oh, help!

Hi, that is pretty big for a first try, but keep going and jump the hurdles as you reach them, I’d use supports around it, I prefer scrunched tin foil under the clay, to both grip to the clay and be light. Maybe build the feet and legs and let dry and then keep going, you should be able to make in sections if you need to. I’ve not added glue to DAS but I know people do, varnish will partly keep it together at the end but it may well have cracks form first as it is so large, don’t worry just fix the cracks by wetting the dry clay and filling with fresh clay. @@RedRockingBird Wow, what a quick reply, thank you very much! Yes, I should have used tin foil, but I saw someone else making theirs with old newspapers and I thought, as I needed a LOT, I will use newspapers too, and also tin foil is so unfriendly to the environment. But I guess I should have used it anyway. I am going to wrap Donald in it at least to seal the paper from the DAS, otherwise I´m worried he might get mouldy from inside.
Yes, that was my plan too, to start with the feet and then work upwards towards the belly, let that dry and then go further upwards bit by bit. I have to make the bill beforehand, I guess, and then attach it to the armature, otherwise this clay is never going to hold the weight of the bill and it will fall right off, I´m afraid. If only I was experienced, but I´m not. But certainly will be after this 😅. I´m just so worried about the legs breaking off. Maybe I´ll put something under his belly for him to "sit" on, as a third support right in the center. It´s going to be a Santa Donald, so perhaps I should just put a wrapped up present under his belly. Oh deary me. But I suddenly got this idea a few days ago and now I want to make it somehow. I´m quite happy with my armature, but in my imagination I can see it call come crashing down. Thank you for your advice! I wish it was possible to upload photos here for people to see what one is doing and provide ideas.
@@Punki80 you’ll hopefully be fine and yes as you say add something else in for support, just make sure it is all 100% dry before you seal him, it does sound like a fun project and never be afraid of jumping in the deep end 😊❤️ best of luck

I rarely do anything these days, there were many very bad things happening around me and to me for at least 10 years (and still are, healthwise, boyfriend died and all sorts of really bad luck), that killed the little creativity that I had left, though I remember as a little girl I was drawing and doing stuff almost every day. It has all stopped. But every now and then, about once a year or even twice, I suddenly want to make something. And this year it was that.
Yes, I will let him dry for at least a week or even more before I continue. Have you any advice what to seal him with? Polyurethane varnish or better something else? That´s my last question, I promise 😉.

Yes you can, although you need to use quite a bit as the clay tends to 'swallow' the colour too well. Hi, thank you for This video. I'm an absolute newbie at this, and i just bought this das clay pack because I was interested in doing two smallish figurines. But I'm scared, especially for the tools i have to use. I have nothing of the usual tools for clay. Can I use something else i have around?

I'm wondering if it's possible to mix a bit of lacquer or resin in the clay to improve durability.
coating in resin afterwards is definitely an option, it could get pretty messy adding it in whilst working with it

Hi, welcome, here in the Uk a pack of air dry clay is a fairly good price and I’d say the best value. I occasionally make my homemade air dry clay which is so strong, but it take a lot of beating to get just right and I find by the time you cost in all the ingredients it not actually any cheaper, so I opt for shop bought for ease in all honesty. Hello! I have spent years trying to get answers on many air dry clay projects and never really succeeded so I am glad you are doing these videos! My problem has always been painting air dry clay with acrylic paint. I find that if I scratch it with just a finger the paint comes off, the paint can be scratched off so easily. Sometimes the paint peels off in one go, it becomes almost like a skin on the clay and can be peeled off. I have tried using clear gesso on air dry clay and then painting it but I get the same results. I bought a better quality of acrylic paint and still I get the same issue. Even tried varnishing it first and then painting which was just a silly idea altogether. What do I do to get the paint on the clay and not have it scratch off?
Hi, I know what you mean about acrylic sometimes becoming like a skin on the surface, my first layer is always watered down a little so it partially soaks into the clay, as a key, I also have experimented with different first coats , sometimes i use acrylic primer sometimes straight onto the thinned down acrylic, but the main thing is acrylic paint always needs sealing, i prefer either spray craft lacquer or polyurethane varnish.
They completely set the acrylic for me.
Some people prefer to work with polymer clay but i really love air dry clay. I am also going to try the lightweight ir dry clay soon, so will see how that is in comparison, will probably do a video!
Do you normally add a top coat over your acrylic?

@@RedRockingBird thanks for responding! I will try to thin the acrylic paint down and paint a few coats and see how it goes. I will also try the lacquer over it. I have used acrylic gloss varnish on it before and still had all the paint peel off.
@@theeditor1149 I find polyurethane varnish excellent, you just have to make sure you leave it to fully dry and not let any get onto what the piece it is propped up on
I have a little video using watercolour (out 2nd April), so no acrylic paint in sight, maybe this is the way for you to go, or at least try out x
Hi! sorry for the late reply but if you're trying to paint an air dry clay, some video tutorials mentioned that you can mixed the paint with the undried clay (as it is from the packaging) so the colors are incorporated thoroughly, not only as a coat. this may works only if your clay piece didn't have a complex coloring technique tho, hope it helps!
What shrinkage can you expect from a large snake model ?
Also, can you hollow out the inside to reduce weight ? Your tin foil suggestion might do the trick.
I would use tin foil yes, it shrinks a little so with a larger/longer piece you need to give it room to shrink and will likely need to fill some gaps once dry
