Faster N' Louder | Abandoned 1973 AMC Javelin AMX Sitting For 40 Years! Will It Run? Yea Right!

  • Since making this video some additional history has been uncovered about the car! This 1973 Javelin was sold in California to the one and only previous owner. The previous owner drove it for about 6-7 years, putting 100k+ miles on it before parking it and later giving it to his daughter in Washington. His daughter never even registered the car to drive it, and let it sit in a pole barn for 40 years! Obviously the car was neglected, but now it's going to get a refreshing and made into a decent roadworthy car.
    Here's what I said about the car in Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine:
    "I'm a big fan and current subscriber to HMM! I figured I'd share my short story and current project car. I've owned several Javelins over the years, the most recent being a '74 Javelin AMX I sold via a dealer; it was subsequently destroyed only three months after the last owner acquired it.
    I'm in my early 30s now, but I've been into muscle cars my whole life, and got into AMCs when I moved to Kenosha in high school. AMCs always provide that "X factor" that not many other cars fulfilled in my brain. Fast-forward to earlier this year and I was dreaming about getting another Javelin, Gremlin, Rambler American, or maybe even a Pacer, to go full-bore with and put in a 360-based 383 stroker.
    Unfortunately, I was also trying to get a business up and running, so the flow of expendable income was glacially slow. However, that didn't stop me from browsing online! After looking at a couple overpriced, glorified parts cars, I came across something very interesting in an online classified. I found what I would consider a "holy grail" car: a '73 Javelin AMX. And it had plenty of goodies, like A/C, power steering, power brakes, functional cowl hood with air cleaner still intact, Rally-Pac gauges, and most importantly, a 401.
    However, as previously mentioned, I had no money. The listing stated the car was in rough shape, had a seized engine, and was more than likely better off as a parts car. It looked rough from the pictures, but I figured someone would be interested in fixing it up for the low asking price of $2,500. It was painful to have to pass up, but I felt better sharing the ad in hopes that someone would snatch it up and save it. Live goes on, and so did the window shopping.
    Fast forward about two months and I was ready to buy myself and affordable project car. After seeing the Javelin AMX, I decided I would be happiest pursuing a Javelin, and focused in on acquiring a worthy project. I put up the 'bat signal" on AMC Facebook groups and forums, and was made aware that a couple good candidates were right in my hometown of Phoenix. As some of the more serious AMC guys are probably aware, Dan Curtis runs AZ AMC Restorations here in Arizona, and contacted me about what he had available at the moment. One of the cars was (drum roll...): the '73 Javelin AMX!
    I checked out the AMX in person shortly after and decided that--despite its rather dilapidated condition--it was totally worth taking on the project. Structurally speaking, the car was pretty rust free, with some minor areas that needed some attention. I had also recently acquired my own personal shop space, so it seemed like it was meant to be. After working out a deal with Dan, the car was dropped off at my shop.
    I have a little girl on the way, so I'm hoping that by the time she's big enough, I'll have this car on the road so we can share the joy of cruising and hot rodding! I also decided to make this an ongoing series on my TH-cam channel, so that all AMC and muscle car fans alike can follow along with the progress. Thank you for reading!"

    Had a 1969 Javelin SST with the small 290 V8. Bought it new from Joe Erdelac AMC in Cleveland Ohio. Olive green with a black vinyl top. Front bucket seats and the plastic wood grained interior. Mine had the tilt steering wheel. Came standard.

    The rubber grommets in the floorboards are to drain e-coat protective coating to prevent rust. They dip the entire body in E- coat let it drain the run through a drying process.

    I absolutely LOVE these cars, I'm looking at getting my own, a 72. Not an AMX, just an SST with the typical 404, 3 speed automatic setup. You just NEVER see these cars and thats why i love them, well one of the reasons. Rarity, not terribly expensive as muscle cars tend to be (ahem 68-70 chargers) and they just dont look like anything else out there on the roads.

    Too bad you don't have a P.O. Box. I have a AMX Drive sign. Not gonna get rid of my original AMC Motors keychain. My uncle had a 69 + 70. One was orange fastback stock 401 and the other was black with purple accent stock 401. Both all original Sept alternators and typical maintenance. Be happy to send this sign to another lover of the ride.

    Hi ! 1958 AMC Rambler Super (pt.45) here, is this the first video you have of your progress on this car? It looks like mine did when I started working on my rambler... I started working on it in December, now it's near the end of July, over done many videos here on TH-cam about it, I got along way to go still... When you work on such an old car you run into tons of bumps in the road with trying to find parts ect that just don't get made any more, like the flared end part o the exhaust pipe that mates to the out side of the exhaust manifold for example, bit your javelin shouldn't be too much greif, I feel like you will have a easy time making progress with this car, and you will be driving it sooner then you think, if you keep steady attention to it, probably half a year before you shoot down to the store and wave to the girls on the way!

    • @FasterNLouder
      @FasterNLouder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir! This is the first part. There’s a couple other video up on our channel as well, like stripping the interior and removing the engine/trans. Would be nice to drive it sooner than later, but there’s no rush!

    Only up to 71 got the 15' rally wheels. Those are the correct wheels for your car. I also have a 73' javelin AMX 401 go pack car with functional cowl hood (missing air cleaner though). It's factory black with white fadeaway t-stripe and pierre cardin interior. It's currently getting worked on. And that's the space saver spare tire in your trunk. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this car

    • @FasterNLouder
      @FasterNLouder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean the Go Package only included the 15” wheels as a part of the package in ‘71? Because I’ve seen several 72-74 cars that had the 15” wheels from the factory. However, I was under the impression it wasn’t necessarily included in the Go Package unless you paid extra.

    • @dkindle127
      @dkindle127 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "machine wheel" as it's referred to was the 15" wheel and was introduced standard option on the 70 rebel machine. Which only ran one year and it was optional thru 71 with some early 72 models. And the go pack could have been 14 0r 15 thru early 72.(planethouston amx for the info) ran by Eddie stakes. 73s like ours the 14in wheel was the biggest. That's why 15s (machine wheels) are so rare.

    • @dkindle127

I'm the original owner of a 1972 Javelin AMX with a 401, automatic. I know all of the fine details to restore the '71 to '74 cars and have considered writing a book on them with plenty of photos, I see so many finished cars online or at shows with details that are wrong. If you ever have a question let me know, I assume you know of the usual AMC part vendors and TheAMCforum? Scott Johnkins

      lol It’s often been wondered where it came from exactly. I have since done a TON of work to the car. I have a couple dozen videos after this one that chronicles the progress I made. I went for more of a “resto mod” approach, but the car is still not really finished.
