You’re totally correct that a 12 or 24 word seed phrase is an industry standard. However, there is also a thing called the derivation path which can be slightly different depending on the hardware wallet manufacturer. That’s why I generally recommend that it’s better to stick with the same brand that you use to create your back up phrase. Although I have done a few videos on how to import ledger seed phrases into other brands like Trezor, there are small little idiosyncrasies that can make this complicated for the average user. Such as the fact that a ledger Live will allow you to create multiple Ethereum accounts, but the Trezor suite will not. So if you have five Ethereum accounts in Ledger Live when you import your 24 word seed phrase onto a Trezor device, you will only see one of them. This is just only one of the possible issues with migrating seed phrases into various other hardware wallets.

Serendipitous. I was just thinking about this. Always have a backup device ( or 2) just in case. Better to have it a not need it, than need it and not have it.
Most hardware wallets have integrity checks. Does not matter where you get them. If they pass the internal cryptographic integrity check, you know they are genuine.
Good advice; however, besides the "seed phrase", the soft-wallets for each type of crypto stored on the device have to be installed on the new device for Ledger Live to be able to "see" all the crypto related to the Ledger. Just doing the "seed phrase" restoration won't automatically let you see other crypto coins you previously put on your old device. These "soft" crypto wallets that were on the old device have to be re-installed on the new device and then the crypto that was visible before on the old device will be visible again on the new device. This is my understanding. Please confirm.
Absolutely correct. Now if you already have ledger live set up with accounts from your previous device, after the restore, you just need to plug in the device and Ledger Live will check if the appropriate app is installed when you go to manage each account. If it does not find it, (the bitcoin app for example, which you describe as the soft wallet) Ledger Live will install it automatically. Or you can install the ones you need manually before you start managing your accounts. If you are starting clean on a new computer, then yes you will need to add each account manually from memory.

Please explain why the same seed phrase should stay with the original wallet manufacturer. I thought the 12 or 24 word seeds phrase was interchangeable regardless of who produced the wallet
It’s not impossible to import your seed phrase from one hardware wallet to another, but there are complications that newcomers might not be aware of. This mostly involves what’s called the derivation path. Not every hardware wallet manufacturer uses the exact same derivation path when they generate their wallets. For example, ledger Live allows you to create multiple Ethereum accounts, Trezor suite does not. So if you have three Ethereum accounts, and then you import into a Trezor, you will only see one of them. you would need a third-party wallet to access those additional Ethereum accounts. That’s just one example. You will always be able to access all your crypto from a seed phrase that you’ve created, but it might not be straightforward and seamless. This is why I do not recommend, importing seed phrases between hardware device manufacturers it just keeps things simpler.

Ledger just celebrated their 10th anniversary and moved into a new global headquarters. Not really the behavior of a company on the brink of bankruptcy: decrypt.co/286556/ledger-unveils-new-global-headquarters-in-paris
Both devices will still work. They both access the same wallets. In other words we call them mirror backups, of course in the case of the older device you might want to set it back to factory and dispose of it. You can set it back to factory by entering the pin incorrectly three times if it’s still working enough for that, otherwise just crush it and throw it away.
This video is more about devices that are not working properly. But there is something to be said about upgrading to newer devices. Newer devices keep up with the times and support newer technologies and have improved interfaces.
My battery on my Nano crapped out on only a few months, still works if plugged into USB, what do you recommend? Keep it? Replace it? It technically still works.
I always use mine at home, so for me, I could still work with it. But it is designed to also be used on the go. You should be able to get it replaced if you contact Ledger. support.ledger.com/article/4423020306705-zd
@JS-nt3el it depends on your needs and your budget. If you’ve got thousands of dollars worth of crypto it shouldn’t be a big deal to spend another $79 on a better device. The ledger Nano S Plus has a lot more app storage space. But by the same token, if you’re only storing a few cryptos, it’s not strictly necessary for the extra space. My only consideration is the ledger S will eventually lose support since it’s no longer being sold. So sooner or later you’re going to need to migrate.

I really appreciate your efforts! Could you help me with something unrelated: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
Great advice 😀👍
Question. How would you dispose of the old devices?
Garbage disposal! but seriously, it's safe to throw away if you have done a factory reset. Not sure about the environmental impact though. Better check the laws if you live in California
@@CryptoDad Thank you. I had one that was so munted, it's not possible to do a factory reset or anything else with it. I'll probably stash it somewhere for a while. Living proof it's critical to upgrade or change hardware wallets every few years!
Ledger nano x is all about update update update. Another key thing is ledger nano x is not fully compatible with iPad device. It runs on mobile device however, you must update and charge on a desktop.
How good is Trezor
i had a ledger that was a gift that i never used. I actually tried to use it again and it was like battery problem. I thought i had my bcc on it and i almost had a heart attack...... i agree, but i also do that with regular flash drives.
I respect you alot Crypto dad but there was a video or something I can't remember that was talking about ledger going bankrupt and that had me looking at other products. This talk about buying new Ledgers has me now thinking they need to start selling more product. Correct me if I'm wrong. What your thoughts on this?
Ledger just celebrated their 10th anniversary and moved into a new global headquarters. Not really the behavior of a company on the brink of bankruptcy: decrypt.co/286556/ledger-unveils-new-global-headquarters-in-paris
Can you replace an old ledger device with a different manufacturers device?
as long as you got your 12 word recovery phrase..
@@subrotoxing8214 Thank for the info.

So what the exchange has is your password not the btc itself?
What are your thoughts on the D Cent biometric wallets? Thanks 👍
Nice wallet. Good price easy to use. I did a video if you want to check it out. th-cam.com/video/bhfDFSIp_pA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UHHYqG65Zv6ofkFN
@@CryptoDad cheers for the info. Will have a look 👍
Underrated sir
Appreciate that
You just shared your seed phrase online holding it up ?
Dislike my ledger nano x. Have to update often and now I have a battery issue.
My device is relatively new and has been a problem from the start-
@@jeanniesilva6741 Tangem solved my hardware wallet problems. No firmware updates and no seedfrase(can have if wanted) Everything is done on my phone.
How do I retrieve btc off of an Ledger HW.1 wallet?
How does it work if I use a new ledger with that new seed phrase? Does the old seed phrase become irrelevant ?
Both devices will still work. They both access the same wallets. In other words we call them mirror backups, of course in the case of the older device you might want to set it back to factory and dispose of it. You can set it back to factory by entering the pin incorrectly three times if it’s still working enough for that, otherwise just crush it and throw it away.
What's the deal for replacing it for a new one if everything works well?
This video is more about devices that are not working properly. But there is something to be said about upgrading to newer devices. Newer devices keep up with the times and support newer technologies and have improved interfaces.
My battery on my Nano crapped out on only a few months, still works if plugged into USB, what do you recommend? Keep it? Replace it? It technically still works.
I always use mine at home, so for me, I could still work with it. But it is designed to also be used on the go. You should be able to get it replaced if you contact Ledger. support.ledger.com/article/4423020306705-zd
I recently purchased a keystone 3 Pro to store my xrp. Does anyone know of a software wallet compatible with Keystone that also supports xrp?
If you have the S and it’s 2 years old and hardly used would you still change it and get a new one to the s plus?
@JS-nt3el it depends on your needs and your budget. If you’ve got thousands of dollars worth of crypto it shouldn’t be a big deal to spend another $79 on a better device. The ledger Nano S Plus has a lot more app storage space. But by the same token, if you’re only storing a few cryptos, it’s not strictly necessary for the extra space. My only consideration is the ledger S will eventually lose support since it’s no longer being sold. So sooner or later you’re going to need to migrate.
@ how soon should you do it? And you keep your same seeds correct?
