I totally agree with you. Becoming a complete minimalist isn't for me. I was going to get my home emptied out, but then I thought about what I had. It has been many years trying to reduce my belongings, but, like you said, it has to be done thoughtfully.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! You’re so right-decluttering isn’t about becoming a minimalist unless that’s what feels right for you. It’s about finding balance and surrounding yourself with the things that truly matter. Taking the time to thoughtfully reduce your belongings allows you to honor the memories and meaning behind them, while still creating a space that feels lighter and more manageable.
It’s wonderful that you’re approaching this process with care and reflection-it’s a journey, not a race. Wishing you all the best as you continue making your home a place of comfort and joy!

I am glad that whoever created this video did so. I have been listening to a lot of others on various videos encouraging their listeners to de-clutter by getting rid of stuff that I myself wouldn't want to for the same reasons you said, including items of sentimental value. Those are the items I would not want to part with the most, and yet I heard them explaining that taking pictures on the phone is a good way to keep those memories alive without actually keeping them while accomplishing the goal of de-cluttering. Sorry, but I don't want to handle my sentimental items in such a depersonaliized way. I want to keep them, not file them away as an image on a phone.
I also agree with you about holding onto excess linens in case of having to use them for emergencies like soaking up spills as I have had occasion to use them for. It is good to have extra kitchen utensils too for all the reasons you said. I can understand parting with half of six sets of measuring spoons, but if you do a lot of baking, you will find yourself needing two extra sets at certain times so I would not consider holding onto three sets as excessive. I agree 100 percent with the information you presented for all the reasons you stated.
This is an excellent video. No one should be made to feel like a hoarder if he has every good reason to keep his things. Give careful consideration before deciding to discard your excess and you won't find yourself regretting or having to purchase something again because you thought you didn't need it.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment and kind words! It means a lot to hear that this video resonated with you and validated your feelings about holding onto sentimental items. You’re absolutely right-sentimental pieces often hold so much meaning that a photo could never replace. Keeping those cherished items is a deeply personal decision, and it’s wonderful to hear that you honor those connections.
I also completely agree with your point about practical extras, like linens and utensils. Life has a way of throwing unexpected spills and kitchen needs at us, and having those backups can be such a lifesaver!
I’m so glad you found this video helpful and aligned with your perspective. It’s all about finding balance-keeping what truly serves you and brings you joy, while making space for a home that feels calm and manageable. Thank you for being part of this community, and I hope the tips here continue to support you in creating a space that’s uniquely yours!

The next generation does not want most of your things get rid of the stuff unclutter your home Believe me the next generation is not sensitive to your story….most anyway

You make a valid point, and it's a sentiment many are realizing. The next generation often values experiences over physical possessions, which can make it challenging to pass down items with personal significance. That’s why decluttering with intention is so important-keeping what truly matters to you, while letting go of the excess.
For heirlooms or sentimental items, consider sharing their stories now, perhaps alongside a handwritten note or a photo. This way, even if the item itself isn’t kept, the memory and meaning can live on in a way that resonates. And ultimately, uncluttering your home can be a gift to both yourself and your loved ones-a way to simplify life and make space for peace. Thank you for sharing your perspective! 🌟

I agree with keeping key photographs of your family. However, they should be scanned and saved digitally as well in case of a fire, flood, earthquake or other disaster. This way, at least the memories are preserved. Scan your yearbooks, using a flatbed scanner, for the same reason. I have more than 80 yearbooks that now fit on a thumb drive and can be accessed when needed for my high school alumni. Also, take pictures of things you can no longer keep, so that at least you have the memories.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and practical perspective! Scanning photos, yearbooks, and sentimental items is such a smart way to preserve precious memories while decluttering. I love the idea of having everything saved digitally-it’s a great safeguard against unexpected disasters, and it’s amazing how much space you’ve saved with your yearbooks!
Taking photos of items you can no longer keep is also a wonderful suggestion. It allows you to hold onto the memories without the physical clutter. Your tips are so helpful, and I’m sure many others in our community will appreciate them. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! 😊✨

Yes, especially on the taking of photos before you let things go that you'd like to keep but can't. At least you have the photo to go along with your memories.

  • @abc-wv4in

Before letting something that's been used for years or decades, I go ahead and ask my kids and grandkids if they want it. Sometimes they do. Even if they don't, it makes it a little easier to let go. Absolutely don't get rid of someone else's things. That's disrespectful. And of course keep family photos or at least digital copies.
I don't agree with all your suggestions, though. Yes, keep the sentimental things or family heirlooms, but some of the things really aren't worth the space they take and stress they cause. Use up that old shampoo now or toss it. It may have gone bad anyway. Stuff like that can and should go, even though I don't like to "waste" things either. If you're not going to use it, it needs to go. Same with odds and ends that you don't even know what they go to, and you couldn't locate them when needed even if you did. Some of this stuff is useless junk. (And I have a lot of it, btw!! But I know better.)
I agree with duplicates of often used things, though, and some extra linens. I have far too many, but do come in handly sometimes.

    • @EvergreenSeniors-n4o

Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful and balanced perspective! I completely agree that asking family members before letting go of sentimental items is a kind and considerate approach. It’s wonderful to hear how you carefully evaluate what stays and what goes, based on practicality and emotional value.
Your point about using or tossing old items like shampoo is spot-on-sometimes holding on can add unnecessary stress. And yes, duplicates of frequently used items and some extra linens can be a lifesaver in many situations.
I’m grateful you took the time to share your insights and feedback on the video. It’s clear you’ve put a lot of thought into your decluttering process, and your tips will undoubtedly inspire others. Thank you again!

Thank you for sharing! It’s amazing that you’ve cherished those gifts for 55 years-what a beautiful connection to your wedding day. I know it can be frustrating when these treasures don’t seem to have a place in today’s world. Have you considered reaching out to antique shops, donation centers, or even online communities like Facebook Marketplace? There are often collectors or families who would love to give these items a second life.
Even if no one claims them right away, holding onto them as part of your story can still bring a sense of comfort. And who knows-perhaps a future generation in your family might rediscover their value one day!

Thank you for the chuckle! It’s definitely tempting to tell loved ones to take their things off your hands. Sometimes, a gentle conversation about how much space it’s taking up-or how much you’d appreciate them enjoying it in their own home-can help move things along. Decluttering is a team effort when it comes to shared belongings!
