Great, Simple Production that works beautifully! I just saw the 2018/19 proructiom of "Ariadne auf Naxos" from the MET with LiSE DAVIDSEN as The Prima Donna/ Ariadne and BRANDON JONOVITCJH as the Tenor/ Bacchus and I must say I was NOT thrilled. The staging is incredible but ARIADNE just stands around for long periods singing but no good movement or body language to show her didtress - this was an opera NOT a concert and then Brandon, offsatge sang a few moments of Bacchus and he seemes a bit amplified. When he got to the stage, his tenor as Bachus is totally underwhelming and he is unable sing out in the grand fashion designed by Strauss and really makes a mess of some top notes that I always crave hearing as in this production with the great black Bacchus. He's fabulous.... as stebtorian as Strauss wanted him and it thrilled me. As I said, the MET prduction (sets) was truly great but the direction of the production lacked most for the two principal stars.,,,,,, Not that this is a criticism but LISE DAVDSEN is so very, very tall for a soprano that it almost looks unnatura;. She looks like an Amazon. Brandon was hust slightly shorter than her; what's going to happen whan she's paired with a much shorter tenor whose only 5'7' or so. She either won't sing or they have to find someone her size. That's what they did with BRANSON but vocally he really disappointed.
a great and most musical performance .. thanks to all those stunnnig artists .. most foreward the conductor and the superb orchestra ! Only NoGo is that nasty and zappling and overacting Dancer replacing Harlequin, she ruined the whole scene totally with playing herself totally into the foreground !!!!!!
bravo!
As I have said, the future of opera's survival is regional. Bravi!
Brillant production!
Fantastic production, fantastic artists!
