It's crazy how much work went into making the silver sky as close to John's specifications as possible but it still can't replicate the strat sound. That sound is HIS tone
The Silver Sky may be "too perfect" IMHO....to the point of being sterile. That being said...that's only from this side of the puter screen as I've yet to open one up. Played many nice Strats...all had warts though.
After a long time we could forget a lil of how godly his guitar playing as he hasnt been quite releasing that many lately. But it really only takes one of any of his live solo to remind us that there never was anyone that even come close to him. YES he is that relevant, or the most.
Everybody talkin about how the PRS doesnt sound like the Strat but forgetting the fact that this is an original 64' strat. Nothing on Earth will closely sound like this instrument
@@robertwellington2616, there's three strats that I'd say are his top 3... The Black One, from Try and Continuum, in Belief, this one, and a Jimi Hendrix Monterrey Pop Strat from his John Mayer Trio days. Any one of those 3, IMHO, as long as I've been listening to him, deliver the goods.
Randy van Vliet I think his SRV Strat means a lot to him though. He worked at a gas station for it. Etc. my favorite as I think I may have said is this 64 strat. Just really like it.
His bandmates are really in awe of him, playing look at Isaiah sharky reaction saying that's tasty bro you got that right. Man completely channeling through different genres that's the knowledge of guitar and on the spot creating magic is perfection.
John could make a Squire Bullet Stratocaster sound good. It's in his fingers. Of course, when one of your favorite guitars is in your hands that's super comfortable to you... you can make it sing and say some pretty unbelievable things, with just the right touch.
It makes one wonder... But I've no idea how much Steve Jordan tours any more, or if he has prior engagements. David Brian Harris is a major staple, as well as Pino Palladino in his North America tours.
@@randyvanvliet226 If you watch steves version of Slow dancing, he plays it with a double beat each time it gives it more of a groove if that makes sense but yeah steve was meant to be on this tour, thats why pino is there, but steve wanted to finish the new verbs album so he couldnt make it
@@ronjhayespeleta4164 I like that he's playing this like the studio recording. I sometimes feel like Steve plays with "too much" groove. I know that's sacrilegious to say though haha
@@rcruz262 well, I think it might be fascinating to see the old master playing with John, similar approach to music, roots etc and also fingerpicking ( partly). That's my opinion, naturally you might want him play with someone else. He already played with EC. If we add David Gilmour we would have my top fav players. What's important, not only are they unique guitarists but also they're all great singers and songwriters. I could place Chris Rea here as well
Cord Scott yeh I saw him couple months back in Australia. It was a bloody magical show but it was PRS all night and not a strat in sight. As soon as I watched this clip, even through my phone it’s just like “ah right there it is”. That vintage strat is a doozy. It has some lower mid range bottle that just can’t be faked.
@Green Frog I guess you are referring to this studio session th-cam.com/video/eazTG2aXJiI/w-d-xo.html I am sorry but you are not right as the SRV-strat is in polyurethane and the guitar in the video is clearly an aged vintage guitar dressed in nitrocellulose lacquer. Slow dancing lives on the 64 strat
They are two beautiful instruments, I think have to enjoy them and not compare them!
Love the Strat also. But I can tell you know nothing about guitars when you're judging its sound via a crappy phone recording.

Why ? Just curious. What has happened since. Did they stop making things like that.
Green Frog none of that is completely true. Older fenders used brazillian rosewood, but have since switched to indian rosewood
Ahhh, such great blues and soul. He makes what he does look so effortless. This guy is one of a few in a class by themselves.
That crowd... is something super special
the first guy literally opened up.. WITH A PRINCE SONG. is no one else talking about that? IM LOSING MY SHIT OVER HERE! 🤣 that was so badass!
I think its cos he does that pretty often, so maybe a lot of people have seen it before
What the other guy said. DRH always intros this song with that cover. At least for the last few years
i was there in person, he sounded amazing
I cried so hard that night...today it seems even more
This guy is amazing!!!

The 64 hits different to the silver sky
Very well put
@@johnpdg9552 very well put indeed!
Look at Pino Palledino looking cold as ice with those shades. Awesome bassist.
No matter what guitar he uses for sponsorship, continuum’s best played in those oozy fender strats.
That, and all his stuff from John Mayer Trio.
Just such a brilliant guitar player
Damn I love this man!
Fabulous !
anybody else think that the guitar isn't the magic portion of this rendition...he's learned to play that guitar very, very well...

Unpopular opinion but like Sterling on this song better, and also Helpless.

As much as I love the 64 strat tone, this song LIVES and BREATHES on the Monterey Strat.
But you do know that in the studio version of this he done it on the 64 strat
Would love to see him playing with the great Mark Knopfler
Why him?
@@rcruz262 try to guess

Fender Tone forever!
Ahh pre covid life
I vaguely remember something like that.
I was in 6th row. what epic fckn night
This strat just brakes up in the best way possible... and that is a "fault" that can't really be replicated in todays guitars, only by chance.
That strat has a sound that his PRS just can’t achieve
Sam Jacobs true af
Agreed. Saw the show yesterday it Pittsburgh. PRS sound "small" and "closed" next to that old strat.

Yes they are! I may have committed some larceny.....
Good artists copy, great artists steal.
trivia: what song was his guitarist singing?
The Beautiful Ones by Prince (I think)
Nothing will or can ever replace this strat! Its his first one from when he was 19!

why 2 drummers?
Ed Sheehan and John Mayer should be in a super group.
