    As I read the comments, I realize how fortunate I am. I have not only my grandmother’s hankies, but her button box, as well. My daughter is 38 and my granddaughter is eight. I have enough hankies to make two of these. Maybe I can do it by Christmas.

    I came upon this video a month ago, ordered some handkerchiefs and have 10 dresses made and ready to add some extras on them. It took me weeks to get the hang of the bodice, reminded me of paper origami, but I finally got it. I am making one each for my granddaughters. I saw several other videos on making this dress, yours is the best as the close up you have and pointing out important details of how, thank you so much. In Joy

      Thank you so much for the lovely compliment! That is exciting that you are doing these for your grandchildren. I understand the trying to get the hang of the top of the dress. When I made mine there was virtually nothing on the internet and I did follow a paper origami to make the dress with my hankie. My husband shoots the videos and does a great job in my opinion. I appreciate you watching and also giving me a comment. I hope to have more videos soon.

    This is beautiful! I have a ton of old hankerchief's my mom gave to me as a child. She said her brother gave them to her when she was a child and I could only have them if I took care of them. I have had them for years now. I'm almost 60 years old. I was trying to figure out something to do with them because they are a memory of her for me and my sister. Now I can make your wall hanging out of them and share one with my sister. Thank you so much for presenting your dress wall hanging on line. It solved my problem and will give me something to pass on to my daughter when I die as a memory of our family...

      Oh Carolyn, thank you so much for your kind words. I too have memories associated with my handkerchiefs. My grandmother used to put our lunch money in a hankie and tie it up for our school lunches every day. I don't know if she thought we would not lose it that way or why she did it, but it is a fond memory for me. I would love to see photos of your finished hankie quilt. Thanks again for the feedback.

      That’s would be nice. I’ve even thought of making a nice block hanging with embroidery of my mom’s name so that I could give a little something to more people. My mom when she was alive gave me some other hankies and they were so delicate it was best to hand wash because I put one in the washer on delicate and it came out with all kinds of loose threads and embroidery and it was so disappointing.

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcellarodriguez7955 I apologize for just now coming across your comment. Yes, lots of the hankies are very delicate, that is why they need stabilizing. I did a butterfly for a friend of mine when her mother in law passed and put her mother in laws name on it and framed it. It came out really pretty.

      @@BrendasQuiltRoom If you used a 11 1/2 inch block, approximately what size hanky did you use? Do you use the same size hanky as the block, or do you use a hanky that is slightly smaller than the size of the block?

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeminiDolly52951 I pulled some hankies out of my box and measured a few. They are different sizes from 11 inches to 14 inches. I did try to use the smaller ones since I was limited to the 11.5 inch background block. Most of the hankies I used in the quilt were all the same size. They were given to me by my sister years ago as a gift and I think they were a set. As you practice, you can manipulate the folds (bigger) on the larger hankies to make the dress come out smaller. If that makes sense? I did that on a few of the hankies because I specifically wanted that hankie in the quilt. I hope that answers your question.

    This is awesome tutorial. Did you quilt the block before adding the Hankie? Did you Machine sew any or just used the stich which to attach all. Did you sew any of the folds to hold in place? I did a Quilt with vintage hankies and it turn out beautiful. I have so many hankies I was looking for ideas and came across this. I am trying this.

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carol, I did not quilt prior to adding the hankies to the block. I used stitch witch to keep them in place. I then sewed by hand all the way around the hankie on the block. I actually used some tacky glue to keep the folds in place in the dress. I then hand quilted the entire quilt. I used a friction pen to mark my lines. It is hanging in the living room now and I just love it. I also have many more hankies to use up and I think I would love to make this one again. Thank you for watching the video and for the compliment. I did machine sew the blocks together.

    I'm going to order lots of hankies to save money and because of the virus, to carry around instead of tissues. I'd love to make one square with a hankie for decorating my room, maybe make four for each wall of my room. They'd look great in a girl's bedroom or anywhere in the home.

      I think they make great decorations. I would love to see pictures of what you do with yours. Thanks for the feedback and watching.

    I have one that is on a cardboard paper doll. I'm going to do this as a nursing home project. To entertain the ladies. I will let them color their doll faces with colored pencils.

    I have few hankies that have a big bouquet of flowers on one corner only and small flowers in the other 3 corners.
    Do you have any video using that kind of hankie for a dress or something else ?
    Your video is very good and inspirational, thank you for sharing your talent !

      Hi Gigi, I do have another video that uses a hankie and you fold it into the shape of a butterfly. I think this would work great for that particular hankie. Fold it in half diagonally so your large bouquet will show as the top of the butterfly body. th-cam.com/video/1TVJUlA2gtQ/w-d-xo.html

    I love this! I will be on the lookout for hankies. I have none but I really want to make this. How sweet! When you hand stitch them down what kind of stitch did you use?

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Doralee, first, thank you for watching and giving me feedback. The stitch that I used on each hankie is a very small blanket stitch with matching embroidery thread to the hankie. I sat and stitched these down in the evenings when we were watching television. I probably only used about 2 strands of thread. I hope your hunt goes well. Thank you!

    Hi Brenda my mother loves you Hanky Dress Quilt it is absolutely adorable. Can you please tell me where I can find how to fold the other different styles of dresses. I looked here on TH-cam but didn't see any other videos unless I just overlooked them. Thank you for your help...

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michele, I want to be sure I am clear on your question. Are you referring to the dresses in my quilt? They are all folded the same way just some are more flared than others which may make them look slightly different. I have looked on the internet for different styles and the only other thing that I see with hankies, is that the hankie is folded into a skirt and someone has added a fabric made top to it. I have made a quilt with hankies into butterflies. That is another video on my channel. Thank you so much for watching and I appreciate your feedback.

      Yes I was and thank you for getting back to me . The quilt is just adorable 😍. As I was closer to the video I would stop it and I could see that the hankys were different of course and I thought maybe they maybe folded the say way but I just wanted to make sure. Thank you again your help love you work!!

      @@michelebaker5018 You are more than welcome. Some hankies were different sizes, so some of the folds had to be bigger or smaller to fit the block I was mounting them to.

      Look at origami dresses. My most beautiful hankies I make a dress and put I n frame. Nice heirloom gifts. Often take colored paper clips and make coordinating miniature coat hangers. I experiment.

    Dorothy mitchell from Dothan Alabama where did you get your Hankins please let me know thanks

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dorothy, thank you for your feedback to the video. I have been collecting hankies for many years. I have found them in antique stores mostly. At least 8 of the hankies used in the video were reproductions that were sent to me from my sister years ago. I just always try to be on the lookout at yard sales and flea markets. It is sort of a game whenever I am in a new place trying to find the little gems that are hiding in the dealers booths.

  • @meiz2855
    @meiz2855 ปีที่แล้ว

    what type hankie you used to make this quilt ?

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the hankies in this quilt are "reproductions" of old antique hankies. A few of them were actual antiques. I try to put hankies of similar size together so the dresses come out to be closely the same size. If your hankies are really thin, it will help to put interfacing behind them. This is not a quilt to be used or washed, it is for decoration purposes only. Thank you for watching and commenting.

    Do you have other style hanky dress folds

    • @BrendasQuiltRoom
      @BrendasQuiltRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comment and feedback. I do not have any other styles of folds for the hankies right now. If you look closely at the hankies in the video. Some have shorter torso areas than others. This is because some hankies are bigger and therefore longer than others. In order to get the dress folded down to the size I needed for the background square. I am going to do some research and see if I can find other "styles" to possibly do a video.
