No zip tie is going to prevent a thief from breaking the window and reaching in and grabbing the release cord. Strong suggestion to NOT buy a garage door with windows.
you totally missed the point, the idea of this trick is that there is NO VISIBLE DAMAGE, by your logic a thief could bust any fucking window in the house to get in (which they can if they wanted to), so it wouldn't matter if the garage door had windows or not.
I agree, but steps are a deterrent. Some people like the extra light thru the door, and I get that. So that was my reason for stronger plexiglass, like 1/4 with frosted film. That with zip tieing the pull lever or another form of securing it will help.
If you are paranoid of this, look into getting the Liftmaster 8500 opener installed. Shaft driven opener, mounts to the side on the shaft and also has a dead bolt that attaches to track. Very very slick opener, very quiet and has battery back-up capability so that its still functional when the power is out. should only cost about 650 installed. You will be very pleased :) You're welcome
Another trick is to remove the garage door's exterior handle/lock from the outside. I only open the door with the door opener motor anyways. I built my garage in 1994 and since then have never had a need to use an exterior handle. It makes it extremely hard to lift the door if there is nothing to lift with.
Thanks for the detailed story. I went right out to Walmart and came back with coat hangers & zip ties and with a little practice I can get into your garage in less than a minute. Thanks again for your detailed story with demonstrations.................
1. At the beginning of the video the lady said "we're not going to show you how", and then they proceeded to show how it's done. 2. Prevent it by locking your garage doors. Use the key that came with it. Thieves can pull that release all they want, it won't unlock the door. It just releases it from the electric door opener.
@@cannotbeshaken7889 Some garage doors have a handle on the outside which is used to manually lock or unlock the door. There is a keyed lock in the handle to prevent unauthorized access.
@@2peter1v2 Yeah, I don't know anyone who has this. And if you lock it, then how do you use it yourself? You have to get out of your car every time to open the door manually, to get into your garage every time you come home?

Ive been a garage door tech for 18yrs, not once have I seen this happen to any of my customers. Also if there are no windows in the door its not that simple and takes way longer. Whatever you do, do not put a zip tie or metal wire into the release mechanism, do not remove your rope either, as in case of emergency you need anyone to be able to open the door release easily including a child or a elderly person as they may be the only people around at the time. Believe me when I tell you this that people have an extreme amount of trouble releasing the door even when everything is working properly, which is not a high stress situation like your cats stuck under the door or worse your child. What this videos didn't show is that they make a part that does allow you to release the opener however doesn't let a coat hanger go around the release. That's not the only type of latch out there. Mine would be impossible to release like that. Plus they need a window to look through to see where the hanger is going, which there are no windows in my door.
Mine is installed in such a way they can’t get to the release lever, which I’m happy about! I thing the garage installer suggested that to my husband because there are problems out there!
This problem is caused by shoddy design. I have an old, obsolete Stanley garage door opener that requires a vertical pull on the cord to release the carriage. Pulling the emergency release latch cord horizontally with a coat hanger or similar wire won't get a burglar anywhere, and there is so little of the linkage exposed at the bottom of the carriage, it would be impossible to engage it with a wire hook.

This video shows 2 different views of what holes the tie should go through. The first view shows the tie going through the 2 small holes for the emergency handle and spring which are correct. The 2nd view shows the tie going over the drive belt and then through the bottom hole of the emergency handle which is wrong. If you do it that way, you will obstruct the function of the drive belt and damage your garage door opener. .

We won’t show you how to break in.... but if you just slip a hanger through the window you can pull the manual release and break in. Then if an alarm is triggered, hide in the garage until police come (with a friend on lookout) and burglarize the house when they leave.
Best to install electric lock on both of side when u press remote the electric lock will unlock then garage will open .. likely operator gate has electric lock at end of gate .. if someone tired to pull cord to open but won't open
Someone tried doing this to my garage door, they broke one of the windows trying to fold in the top of the door trying to get to the cord, we believe the glass falling might have scared the person away, even if they had gotten to the string we have the doors locked on on each side so wouldn't have opened anyway.
I just wedge one of my pry bars thru one of the openings in one of the door tracks problem solved. when I had to have my garage door replacement it did not have any windows :)
I agree with garagedoorman....that safety release is put there for a reason. I hope that TV station its willing to take the liability of disabling a safety feature. Really you should look to mitigate the means of getting a coat hanger into that slot....a block of wood would work just fine or obscure the windows so the would-be thief can't see the release mechanism.

But, you DID show us how! Looks like you'd need windows though for the hamburglar to see where his clothes hanger is hooking onto.............Thanx!!!!!!!!!!!
Wouldn't this be a hazard in an emergency? I've used a screw driver inserted into a hole on the track and unplug the opener when going on vacation. The risk is to forget that these procedures are in place, ie. the zip tie needs to be cut.
newmexrob99 I'm a garage door guy and have had to do this a couple times with a solid door because the opener failed and they were stand alone garages without a man door. It's not that difficult with a solid door, just takes a little longer.
Zip tie? No problem. Instead of a flimsy coat hanger, use something stronger, like hobby shop "music wire" duh... So just disable the whole emergency pull thing by welding it; it's the ONLY safe way to prevent break-ins.
First off please beware there is a UL & federal law that requires the emergency release have no more the 50lbs strength there's no way a zip tie meets that if your putting a women whole body weight into break it. Also note in the video they never confirmed that's how people were getting into homes just says burglars could use a coat hanger that is a big difference. People please use common sense a zip tie is not worth the injury or death in an emergency nor should any professional garage door company recommend using one. This has been addressed in many garage door magazines and no confirmed break in we're reported , once again these are just you tube fame videos.
Thought they weren't going to show how to do it? Good to know but seems to me they tell too much and now more thieves know how to get into your house. I try and tell people not to leave the door to the house unlocked but they do anyway. Too lazy to unlock their door, so thieves gain easy access.
That is what I do also. Somehow the the frequency used was causing me door to open from my neighbors device. I disconnected mine and do as you do and just do the manual thing. I also have padlocks on either side to keep door stuck down until I am ready to open. Simple fix.
Inhalin1514 They are telling you to zip tie the emergency release for the garage door operator. If there is a fire or a power outage and someone has to get out of the garage quickly, they may not be able to BREAK the zip tie by pulling the emergency release cord. - I work for a garage door company.
I'm sorry, but I really can't tell if you all are just joking or simply dumb. This video shows that garage can be dangerous, now what is your option? 1. Do something about it. 2. Post stupid comments below, do nothing, and let thieves who already know how to do this break into your house. 3. Good luck being ignorant and not learn anything new ever. 4. Oh, and you can use this trick to get into your own garage in case you lock yourself out and have no other options unless you prefer freezing to death, etc. Your choice.

Wouldn't this be a hazard in an emergency? I've used a screw driver inserted into a hole on the track and unplug the opener when going on vacation. The risk is to forget that these procedures are in place, ie. the zip tie needs to be cut.
+Rudy Hiebert jesus did you not watch the part where she pulls the handle and breaks the zip tie?
This garage door had windows .. all the guy had to do was look at where the wire was.. i want to see that done on a solid door with no windows..
newmexrob99 I'm a garage door guy and have had to do this a couple times with a solid door because the opener failed and they were stand alone garages without a man door. It's not that difficult with a solid door, just takes a little longer.
Easy to do if you raise the door enough to see over the top of it and up to the opener
They can still hook on to the cord and pull it through and break the zip tie just as she showed she did.
I recommend booby trap the latch with a stick of tnt. Just remember to defuse it before you pull that thing yourself.
ARE YOU SERIOUS? THE THIEF IS HIDING IN THE GARAGE? WE HAVE BETTER COPS IN MY TOWN, SORRY!
how does a zip tie cost 5$?!
I think they mean a bag of zip ties.
show me a store that sells zip ties individually shithead
Get liftmaster 3800 jacks haft it mounts on the side of the door
one more reason why I only use doors without windows. Have fun trying this without seeing in.
somebody didn't watch the whole video, IF YOU DO IT ENOUGH TIMES YOU CAN DO IT BY FEEL!
Upgrade to liftmaster and chaimberlain openers that use there auto lock then you won’t have to redo a zip tie every time you pull the handle
Zip tie? No problem. Instead of a flimsy coat hanger, use something stronger, like hobby shop "music wire" duh... So just disable the whole emergency pull thing by welding it; it's the ONLY safe way to prevent break-ins.
or put something around the door that prevents teh coat hanger/wire from being fed in in the first place.
lol "We're not going to show you how." *Proceeds to show how
LOL, right? They meant: "We won't show you OURSELVES, but the video will." LMAO
5 dollar insurance policy? Zipties only cost a few pennies...
or... dont have any windows in your garage or garage door and security bumps ups pretty well!
So... any of you kids who weren't going this... now you know how! Go rob!
Really??? You're not going to show us how, but here's how it's done?????
What on earth are you thinking? Plus....thanks for telling the world how!!!
Thought they weren't going to show how to do it? Good to know but seems to me they tell too much and now more thieves know how to get into your house. I try and tell people not to leave the door to the house unlocked but they do anyway. Too lazy to unlock their door, so thieves gain easy access.
I thought the same thing....news morons.
Only problem with showing, is that it gives thieves more leverage and knowledge. :(
Since I'm not a lazy ass, I get out and open my garage door manually. I keep a padlock in the door track when I'm not at home.
That is what I do also. Somehow the the frequency used was causing me door to open from my neighbors device. I disconnected mine and do as you do and just do the manual thing. I also have padlocks on either side to keep door stuck down until I am ready to open. Simple fix.
check out the garage protect at the meneaitomania youtube website. It is very clever and patent pending
THATS BAD GARAGE DOOR BREAKS INS I DONT LIKE THAT AT ALL GOOD JOB PROTECTING IT THANK YOU good job
Government says not to use a zip tie. You will be trapped inside the garage when a fire breaks out and the power is down.
What I do is I put the the trolly to the end of the rail and it worked I couldn't get it :)
A zip tie can be a fire hazard.
How so?

They are telling you to zip tie the emergency release for the garage door operator. If there is a fire or a power outage and someone has to get out of the garage quickly, they may not be able to BREAK the zip tie by pulling the emergency release cord. - I work for a garage door company.
Fire or getting murdered? The door into my house is like a closet door door. I'm zip tying mine baby, I got plenty of doors or windows to get out of.
Adventures with grandpa , old metal can adventure.
maybe get a garage door without windows if you ever have to replace one.
Better outlaw wire hangers
Shhh don't give them any ideas.
Mark Smith the thieves are actually victims as it is not their fault the hangers do such bad things.
California first.
They should just design it so the pivot point is on the other side.
We're not going to show you how to do it in a video. Did proceeds to show you
