great runthrough rahdo. i played with the black and orange dice at gencon and i was disappointed that they weren't in the base game when i bought it later on. now i know why. it's a must-buy for me
I still prefer Race For The Galaxy over Roll but this expansion looks so much better than ANY of the expansions for Race. It seems like Rio Grande Games learned from their mistakes and gave the fans what they actually want.
Richard, unrelated question: did you play 'gold west'? Considering this game (two players) but can find very little info on it. Unlike many Ks games that are hyped for a year before release, this one is out now and there is almost zero info or reviews.
+shatnershairpiece i played it a gencon 2014 in prototype form as a 3p game and liked it a lot. i picked up a copy at essen but haven't played it 2p yet... hope to before the year is over though (but i picked up a LOT of games at essen, so we shall see :)
@@thomasphillips885 no they don't make you have to use expansion stuff. the right sticker is just an updated reference in case you want to use the black & orange die. the right sticker is a reminder that if you're using the black die, it's part of standard setup. but you can leave them out of the game :)
I saw a posting for this on reddit and hadn't played the original game either, so I thought I'd come here and link over to the original video and watch it first. There doesn't seem to be a link in the video or in the notes or anything. Just thought i'd mention you might add that. :-)
Hey Richard, wanted to ask for your 2 player variant. Do you use the "dummy dice" when you play with this variant? I feel it adds a lot of randomness and ruins some of the follow feel. Do you have any suggestions for alternates for 2 players?
+Hisham Masri we follow the rules as written. the thing is, the dummy die is most likely to produce explore, so you can 'anticipate' what it's going to do, just like how you can anticipate what other players rare likley to do :)
My problem with this is... I have to rebuild my insert. And it's expansion #1 which means there are more? Maybe I should hold off on making inserts for Roll for the Galaxy. Looove your videos.
hey Rahdo, not sure whether writing here is a good idea, but eventually you will stumble across this comment I hope :) I was thinking it would be really cool if you did a Top 20 video of your all time favorite games, but with a twist: talking about how good (or not) their expansions are. I always assumed that you are rating older games by taking into account expansions too, but it would be nice to know if you are still playing these games with expansions, or whether you prefer one expansion over the other (in the case a game has multiple expansions)... anyway, just a suggestion for a top x video, since you mentioned you love making those :) cheers and looking forward to new videos!
the problem is, i never get a chance to be "still playing" any game, as i'm always moving forward to cover whatever next is new. so i'd have to take a year off from filming the channel to be able to gather day for something like this i'm afraid :(
Hi Rahdo, I'm going to intro either race or roll for the galaxy to my wife and wanted to know your thoughts on which to start with. Many people seem to suggest roll but I feel like many of those people started with race, and because of race, now appreciate roll. Whereas I think if I started with roll, as neither of us are a huge fan of dice, both race and roll may be lost on us due to not enjoying roll. Do you think people who play race first get more out of roll? Really appreciate your videos as they are a great kickoff point for finding games for my wife and I to play.
+rlong007 Since you're not dice fans you may be right. But we played Race exactly once and I could never get my husband to try it again. When I introduced him to Roll it was a whole different story. It did take him a few plays to catch on but he liked it enough to stick with it since he is a big fan of dice. Now it's a favorite, but we have played it so much that we are looking forward to the expansion to freshen it up.
+Kathy Sheets The more I think about it the more I think you just have to go through Race first. I have a hunch that we will like Race better due to lack of dice, but the complexity of Race (or at least I think its complex - haven't played, only watched) may turn her off hence the question, as I think Roll is more streamlined and straightforward (or so it seems - haven't played either, only watched). Thanks for the input +Kathy Sheets and +rahdo !
+rlong007 I played roll first and don't normally enjoy dice games that much (like you), but I loved it. So, no, race is not needed and especially not needed as a first impression. I hope this helps :)
+gooberweevil hehe, i meant that 9+14=23, and now that there's 23 roles available, that's more than double what used to be available. i should have said "almost triple" come to think of it :)
FINALLY! Someone's actually reviewed Ambition. Thanks for that Richard. It's definitely not one for anyone new to the game.

... and he is back!
Thanks for the quick review!
Really glad I was able to pick it up at Essen! Love the game and with the expansion it will be even more interesting ;)
Thank you for putting this out!!! I have been dying to see this! :)
Ohhh I want this so bad! I missed it on Essen :( Roll for the Galaxy is one of my favourite games. I love it so much.
wow! I so want this expansion!! we love RftG! thanks for the review!

+shatnershairpiece Watch It Played has an instructional video and full two player gameplay video for Gold West.
+streakypro Saw it already, thanks. Wanted to get Richard's opinion.

+rahdo Picked it up a Essen as well, and it works well with 2!
This and Shadowrun Crossfire are on my to buy list. As always, thanks for the overview
Hi Rahdo, thanks for the review. Sorry if I am missing something, but do the stickers make it so you have to use the expansion?
Good question! Anyone have an answer yet?

Thanks all! I did decide to go with Race first. Should be interesting!
cool, definitely a must buy, any idea when will it be available?
+Suiki Yeung soon probably. it was available for sale at essen from a regular retail stand, nothing special, so i would assume before the year is out?
Did you get rid of this expansion? Noticed it's not on your list of owned games anymore. If so, curious what changed your mind.
+3ldfilms nope, i still have it and love it. i list expansions as "preordered" on boardgamegeek to make categorizing things easier
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, Rio Grande!!!
My only question is when can I get my hands on this?
love ya but 14 isn't more than double 9 ;)
+gooberweevil hehe, i meant that 9+14=23, and now that there's 23 roles available, that's more than double what used to be available. i should have said "almost triple" come to think of it :)
+gooberweevil Haha, yea I think he meant like 9+14 = 23. You end up with more than double than original box.
+rahdo alright math forgives you. :)
