  • The August 4, 1979 Knebworth version of Kashmir may be the best live Led Zeppelin version available on video. Our first-time reaction also includes Sick Again and White Summer/Black Mountain Side from the same concert.
Neither of us have seen or heard these performances before. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.
    00:00 - Intro / White Summer
    06:10 - Black Mountain Side
    07:40 - Kashmir
    17:04 - Sick Again
    Corrections:
0:29 - We didn't skip Trampled Under Foot. It is in our next video.

As a person who dabbled in guitar, I was amazed by Jimmy Page. However, I recognize that he's been criticized for playing a bit sloppily. It's true. Many modern guitarists hit every note perfectly but Jimmy wasn't perfect. His licks and riffs were very innovative and he did push himself beyond his capabilities. Back then, there weren't many guitarists who could match his creativity or the quality of music he was making.

I was there that day. Sitting about 10 feet from the mixing desk in the middle of 200,000 people. I'd seen them before and knew what to expect, many of the people around me were stunned into rapt silence. It really wasn't one of their best performances that day, you could tell they were nervous, but even on a bad day they were better than every other band out there. The video you are seeing is a later mix of what was on the big screen behind them. It's not exactly the mix that we saw on the screen that night, some of the shots were mixed in for this video which they released many years later. For literally decades the only footage they released was the song "Hot Dog" which they also played that night. After 20 odd years we finally got to see more of the footage as it first gradually creeped out as bootlegs in the 1990s before the band finally saw the light and released some of it officially. So all you young TH-camrs, think yourself lucky, all these years later you can just click a button and see this!

This Kashmir from 8/4/79 is one of the greatest live recordings ever. The sound they achieve is huge! And the love they have for this music, 11 years into their career, bespeaks the fact that all the drugs and booze and women and tragedy was just something they had to somehow survive to keep doing what they really loved. If they had played Knebworth for a month, played every song they'd ever written five different ways (which they were perfectly capable of doing) and all of it were lost except this version of Kashmir, I'd still call it worth it. I feel like with the studio version they told us of a mythical place called Kashmir...in this show they took us through the gates!

So beautiful and amazing when real musicians without Autotune just did their thing and would kill it. I lived through it as a teenager back in the 70's and it was incredible. Not just Zeppelin but all of those bands. It was an a great time to be alive and appreciate music in all it's forms. It was crazy in a great way.

This was very cool sequencing this section of the concert together, with White Summer/Black Mountain launching into Kashmir....and then topping the trip shot with Sick Again! Dev's analogy of being taken away by the music "like a leaf in a river" was spot on! :) Mike, you "Love that Dirty Water, Oh Boston Your My Home," LOL?

The Royal Albert Hall 1970 show has a great take of early in career White Summer.
Despite Jimmy's " impairment" it's clear that Zeppelin still had plenty left in the tank in 1979/1980.

For your own listening pleasure, and although the video is a little grainy, Jimmy did a great version on the Julie Felix show way back in 1970. It's on YT.

Everyone talks about the 2007 concert which was great but hands down this wins. Plant sounds just like studio. Page can be heard better and adds extra. Bonham is the original and greatest. Maybe one could say the 2007 has a more modern sound due to Jones part and technology but even there i prefer this
