Ep 56 Sailing Solo from Madeira to Bermuda - Part 1

  • I head west for what I think will be a 20 day trans-Atlantic passage to Bermuda (on an unusual route, at an unusual time of year - May). Loss of use of the spinnaker coupled with a rapidly descending high pressure zone, adds more than a thousand miles to the adventure.......

    “I guess this is my way of challenging that”... couldn’t have said that any better! I was asked almost the same question, “Why do you want to sail around the world?” My answer was, because it scares me and tests me. So keep facing the challenge!

      The ocean is wild and over your head
      And the boat beneath you is sinking
      Don't need room for your bags, hope is all that you have
      So say the Lord's Prayer twice, hold your babies tight
      Surely someone will reach out a hand
      And show you a safe place to land

    Patrick, you are such a fantastic sailor and storyteller. I must also say, besides excellent camera work, you, a master captured just the right sound of the waves and the gurgling sound of your stern - it feels like I'm on board with you. No silly background music, just you and the ocean. Thanks for that. Cheers.

    An appropriate quote for you all
    on... Good sailing.."To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise, you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen who play with their boats at sea..."cruising" it is called.Voyaging belongs to seamen,and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change.Only then will you know what the sea is all about. "'I've always wanted to sail to the south seas, but I can't afford it." What these men can't afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of "security." And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine and before we know it our lives are gone. What does a man need really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter,six feet to lie down in -and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That's all- in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade.
    The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed. Where, then, lies the answer? choice.! "Which shall it be: bankruptcyof purse or bankruptcy of life...?
    Sterling Hayden

    I was thinking about the fuel filter change during poor conditions. Isn't it an idea to have a filter in parallel, so you can just switch filters by switching 2 3-way valves in front and behind the filters?

    I used that fuel bottle trick to get a diesel truck with a failed fuel pump off the road the other day. I just kept refilling the fuel filter and would get a few 100 feet before it would run out again : ) Thanks for the idea!

    As a Rigger i would never have the Spinnaker reeved thru the fairlead that came off the mast, that fairlead is used on a roller furler so that the halyard that hoisted the swivel does not wrap around the fore stay if it is parallel with the forestay, the spinnaker halyard should be run thru a swivel block attached to a crane attached to the top of the mast.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've just discussed this with the local Selden people. The fairlead was poorly engineered/attached, but not a bad idea. It is a fractional rig, and in addition, the top of the mast did not have a swivel block --- so the floating spinnaker would definitely result in chafe on the halyard, which would eventually end in tears. They will install a much better set-up for me.

    I love the simplicity on a fast boat. On a long a passage like this would you think a Wind Vane Steering would be advantageous?

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wind vanes are really not suitable for boats that are designed to 'surf' when running downwind at relatively high speeds because the apparent wind changes radically with every passing wave. (My boat was grossly overloaded, so did not surf very well.) Moreover, it is not simple to put a wind vane on boats like this (open transom -- very wide and flat stern). It can be done, but most people prefer the high performance (very expensive) autopilots available from NKE or B&G. Fair winds to you.

    Great to see you back on the water, Patrick. Wonderful video which is BTW your standard! A comment and 2 questions: I also always have a liter bottle of diesel to top off the Racor after changing the fuel filter and, as yet, I have never had to bleed the fuel lines to get the engine running after the change. Can you explain what happened to the spinnaker halyard in greater detail and can you remind us the make and model of your new boat? Thank you.

    i needed a utube sailing adventure that reminds me its never to late to go for it..just staring out .two years learning the knowledge relating to oceans ,small yachts and lots of utbeing from single handers and couples..i love your channel.just one thing that bothers me .why is the life raft not securely fixed outside the yacht.'?.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  ปีที่แล้ว

      This boat originally had a space on the aft transom for the life raft. However, the new autopilot that I installed (a mandatory piece of equipment for crossing an ocean) took the space of the life raft. I studied every option of tying down the life raft somewhere on deck, but none of the solutions were really possible/practical. Thus, I took it down into the saloon with me.

    I’m 51 and I get that feeling often that maybe the best years have gone by. Or more accurately I want to ensure the best years are in the future. And that’s why I’ve chosen to sail the world soon. I found a fabulous wife that’s going to accompany me on that journey. Our business is close to being built that will fund the adventure. Thank you for your videos. I sailed a couple times in boy scout summer camp so I’m depending on TH-cam videos to learn, as silly as that sounds. I’ve already learned much about the craft in a short time watching you and I appreciate your calm demeanor when experiencing difficult circumstances. Hopefully I can model the same behavior and stay above water. Cheers.

    Patrick, good on you for taking that great solo challenge. If you find yourself in the SC of in the NE US coast, please drop me a line. Be save and take care.

      Just saw this, so sorry for the delayed response. My 'Plan A' had me going up the East coast with a few stops along the way....... My initial crossing was so slow, that I decided to stop in Bermuda, and then proceed directly to Canada. This gives me an excuse to try it again to better my crossing record Richard. :-)

      @@patricklaine6958 Sorry we missed you. Sailing up the east coast now. Plan to traverse the Cape Cod Canal today. Be safe.

    You could be gardening in Saskatchewan, waiting for rain and didn’t make a choice to get sailing.
    I think it commendable what you are doing. Really enjoy your sailing, commentary& thoughts. You have my vote to stay the course as you can, as long as you can. 🍀🌏👌

    I like that you seem to keep the boat upright most times, I spend a lot of time practicing setup and trimming to keep it flat, I find it fast and comfortable.

    Yep, spot on mate. We all look that devil in the eye. I'm closer to the end than the beginning and trying hard not to let the old man in.

    What else should you have done Patrick,,,,,, sit down in a chair somewhere watching the rest of your life to pass bye.... dont worry the armchair has killed more dreamers than exploring has ever done. Keep doing your thing for as long as the gain balances the catch.
    Thanks for bringing an inspiration. Best regards from Jarle

    How much wind when your spinnaker failed? Im curious why your spinnaker has a guide when a spinnaker halyard is usually at the top. My sail maker told me 16kts and below for my cruising gennaker.

    ...with my modest english, i also got "i guess my best years gone by, and this is my way of challenging that". Interesting point of view Patrick. Also interesting that route from Madeira. Cheerio to life Patrick, and, as ever, Fair Winds
