I didn't realise, but when I removed my old battery, the small metal square between the battery and trackpad stuck to the previous battery. SO, basically I have attached the new battery without that metal square between those two parts (the one you remove around 27:00). The battery is essentially stuck to the bottom of that trackpad. The laptop works brilliantly, the trackpad works well, the current max of the battery is 106%. Should I be worrying about this square not being attached? What is it used for? Will I need it- should I remove the battery and attach it now? Any suggestions would be great- thanks in advance!
@@ItsBinhRepaired is it not risky if its just tuck down? Might I wrench the trackpad award by trying to remove it? What would be the best way to do this- many thanks for your reply!
I wonder if it would help using label off between the case and battery before trying to remove it, it might be a little tight to try to spray in between but I mean it should work right? If you're careful with home much you spray?
@@ItsBinhRepaired Oh well I'll try to do it your way and then mine on each side and let you know by next week how it went. I should get my new battery next week and Im going to replace my thermal paste too.
@@ItsBinhRepaired Dude..it went so much faster and it didn't even make a mess! It took like 5 minutes to get the battery out for me and another 5 to bend the connector in place and stick it back down! And about 10 min to repaste the CPU! Wayyy faster then I expected it to, the old sticky stuff just came off with the old battery so no mess or clean up needed after spraying some of the sticker remover.
Thanx for this long boring video. Lol. It actually helped a lot. I did it with a cake spatula and nothing else. Lol The only thing is that the screw holes didn’t line up near the connector, but I just left those screws off. No big deal cuz the battery is stuck on there pretty good. Doesn’t move.
Question. One of my battery things bulged and nothing works. I don’t care to replace the battery because I heard it can just run being plugged in only (which is fine for me) So I did a couple of the steps, and have a question…. If I unhooked the pin connector like you did with your fingers successfully, shouldn’t that disconnect the battery and let me know if this will work as I’m hoping with no battery? Because it isn’t :( it’s also possible I don’t have the exact right charger even though it lights up orange. Thanks for the video
@@ItsBinhRepaired oh great… why? I haven’t used it in like a year it’s been sitting in a drawer. So I’m right about, if it’s gunna work just plugged in, it should do so if I unhook that little pin connector thing
I just replaced the battery in my mid 2012 15" A1398 with a original Apple A1417. Taking the old battery was easier than i expected, i used a spatula and alcohol. However, the new battery is not charging.. System reports battery as installed with 1 cycle count. The Magsafe light is orange and is powering the computer now, if i disconnect the Magsafe computer dies. I did SMC and PRAM multiple times already but still the new battery is not charging. I don't understand why.
@@ItsBinhRepaired No it wasn't the alcohol.. actually i just took it to a computer repair shop and they tested with a new battery and its up and running now. It was a defective battery. Thank you for the video tho, very informative and helpful.
use isopropyl and lots of it ....peel and leave it squirt more liquid .....dead easy and do not use that butter knife spatula thing .... its soak it raise a little and leave 10 seconds later do the same and I used my fingers and one plastic pry tool .....its all about soaking it in isopropyl if you soak it enough you could just lift it off....Ps brilliant video follow the steps its an easy fix thankyou
I'd like to find a different tool to break the adhesive, the spatula made me cringe a little, though I can see why you use it. Great vid, you have shown people exactly what the techie must do and why it takes so long. Also, good precautionary advice draining the battery completely and pressing the power button to drain all power.
you can find proper tools in lots of places online. its much safer to use plastic prying tools and adhesive remover to do this repair. It will also save you loads of time and there is mush less risk of puncturing the battery. this video is an example of how NOT to do this repair.

I was concerned about using this metal tool so resorted to a plastic ruler instead. Everything went okay but when I put the bottom cover back on the screws seem to be not so good going back in. Even each screw was placed exactly back to where it originally came out. Feels flimsy.

@@ItsBinhRepaired Did not change it yet, but with your great video I'm sure I will. Do you think it is a good opportunity to clean the dust from the interior ( I heard that it can cause corrosion over time)? How would you do it according to your experience?
Umm, I wouldn’t recommend using a metal spatula. I did this last night, the spatula pierced part of the battery and I quickly caught fire. I called the fire brigade. I would strongly recommend people use a plastic item to separate the battery from the case. Or the floss method.
@@ItsBinhRepaired almost exactly the same as yours. I was successful getting it done. though. But yeah, the battery is still sitting a bucket of water out the front of my house slowly simmering away. Fire brigade say it may burn for up to five days. Lol.
I recommend a plastic spatula, because a metallic may rip the battery and noone need that corrosive chemical on them fingers! Also, I would avoid placing the spatula below the speaker, first time I tried it, accidentaly snapped that long edge and had to order new speaker. I would begin from the edges of the battery.
Instead of a knife I'd suggest using isopropyl alcohol and a credit card (old, of course) to separate the battery from the body and clean the residues. It's much easy and don't scratch the body. More professional...
@@ItsBinhRepaired I know it's not, lol!!! But it certainly scratches the aluminium. Use nylon tools made for car interior finish instead. They won't scratch aluminuim and, since they're light and not conductive, won't cause problems to any motherborad should they end up there. Or keep using your "knives", force instead of ipa and be happy. The results look very professional when the MacBook is closed.
@joseerazevedo those weren't scratches. It was adhesive residue. This is an old video. I now clean the residue with a dripper and isopropyl alcohol. Also, the new ones use a different adhesive that can be peeled. Some of the older ones crumble.

Your several years of experience are from a time where lipo batteries weren't held in place with adhesive, so it's irrelevant. Anyways, a great job, I am now feeling more confident to crack on with this repair and just need to source a replacement battery. Amazon.co.uk stocks the same NinjaBatt as used in this video... how many of these have you used, have you had any issues, can you recommend these batteries?
@@ItsBinhRepaired Well, will say it again... this is, by far, the best video I have watched and I would be quite happy to undertake this repair having watched it a few times. Just deciding if I actually need to do anything at this stage as I rarely use the laptop on the battery... But, the original battery was replaced under warranty and they (Apple) said the original battery had swelled up and would have caused damage if it had been left much longer before being replaced, so maybe, that is also something to consider?

Also to help remove the old adhesive you can use acetone (nail varnish remover) it helps soften the black foam to scrape off and then you can use the acetone again to finish removing the glue so its completely clean :)

Checked battery health and it says normal, instead of service. It's the exact same laptop in your video. The little trick you mention plugging the battery plug in was awesome, was so scared to bend those pins. Line up, corner first, level, then gently push and pop! The authorised apple repairer refused to repair it because it's over 7 years old. Apple tells them to "encourage the customer to upgrade and buy a new one". What battery do i need to buy for this macbook? which one have you replaced yours with as i want to make sure i buy the right one
This one amzn.to/3Ru87oi
I didn't realise, but when I removed my old battery, the small metal square between the battery and trackpad stuck to the previous battery. SO, basically I have attached the new battery without that metal square between those two parts (the one you remove around 27:00). The battery is essentially stuck to the bottom of that trackpad. The laptop works brilliantly, the trackpad works well, the current max of the battery is 106%. Should I be worrying about this square not being attached? What is it used for? Will I need it- should I remove the battery and attach it now? Any suggestions would be great- thanks in advance!
I think it should be ok.
I would put it back if not too much trouble though.
@@ItsBinhRepaired is it not risky if its just tuck down? Might I wrench the trackpad award by trying to remove it? What would be the best way to do this- many thanks for your reply!
@@jennycrossby8408 that's true! If the battery is stuck directly to the trackpad, you might rip it out. I guess you have to leave it as is. :(
I wonder if it would help using label off between the case and battery before trying to remove it, it might be a little tight to try to spray in between but I mean it should work right? If you're careful with home much you spray?
Possibly. I don't like messing with the goop though. It's better to get the battery out first, then soak the residue with isopropyl alcohol.
@@ItsBinhRepaired Oh well I'll try to do it your way and then mine on each side and let you know by next week how it went. I should get my new battery next week and Im going to replace my thermal paste too.
Sounds good!
Haha yeah, Sorry, you'll want to listen to some music or watch some Netflix while you follow along. XD
All went well - but the cursor won’t move. Did I not connect something on the reassembly?
Are you confident you didn't damage the trackpad cable?
Might be a dead motherboard
@@ItsBinhRepaired oh great… why? I haven’t used it in like a year it’s been sitting in a drawer. So I’m right about, if it’s gunna work just plugged in, it should do so if I unhook that little pin connector thing

I just replaced the battery in my mid 2012 15" A1398 with a original Apple A1417. Taking the old battery was easier than i expected, i used a spatula and alcohol.
However, the new battery is not charging.. System reports battery as installed with 1 cycle count. The Magsafe light is orange and is powering the computer now,

Using 91% Isopropyl alcohol cleans up the glue very easily and dries so fast it does not harm any electrical parts.
That's what I use. The alcohol itself doesn't harm the electronics, but it can carry stuff that can.
Umm, I wouldn’t recommend using a metal spatula. I did this last night, the spatula pierced part of the battery and I quickly caught fire. I called the fire brigade. I would strongly recommend people use a plastic item to separate the battery from the case. Or the floss method.
What kind of spatula did you use? It needs to be very flexible and not sharp.
@@ItsBinhRepaired almost exactly the same as yours. I was successful getting it done. though. But yeah, the battery is still sitting a bucket of water out the front of my house slowly simmering away. Fire brigade say it may burn for up to five days. Lol.
@cuznmatt uhhh water is bad for lithium. It makes the fire worse. Lol
Why hold option button? Whats use of it?
boot menu
Do I have to calibrate the new battery?
Not really. Just don't leave it plugged in when the computer isn't being used. Usually drain to 10% is fine
Ouch, yeah, you need special tools like what I use. They aren't designed for it, but it has the properties needed for the job.

Dont ever use metal to saperate the batre from adhisive. I use atm card or credit card fot that purpose
Why not? I have a giant plastic bucket filled with them...
Instead of a knife I'd suggest using isopropyl alcohol and a credit card (old, of course) to separate the battery from the body and clean the residues. It's much easy and don't scratch the body. More professional...
Knife? That's not a knife... lol

Amazon.co.uk stocks the same NinjaBatt as used in this video... how many of these have you used, have you had any issues, can you recommend these batteries?
