Fishing with Live Bait and Casting Spoons Below The Dam!

- Have you tried fishing with live bait and casting spoons below the dam? Many big fish can be caught in the spillway below a dam. Today we are using live minnows (shiners) as bait. Multiple fish were caught including some nice hybrid striped bass and big catfish. I also caught a hybrid on a spoon while simply casting and retrieving. At one point we even had three fish on at the same time which is so much fun! If you want to try fishing below a dam, I might suggest live bait like minnows and spoons.

Awesome multi-species action! When I used to live in the midwest I would fish dams on the Mississippi river quite a bit. In a given day you could catch walleye, sauger, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, pike, crappie, rock bass, bluegill, channel and flathead catfish, white bass, yellow bass, buffalo, gar, carp, suckers. So much fun!
no pike here, but many of the others are around depending on the season 👍

One of these years, I'm going to challenge myself and fish all year with ultralights.
It is sooooooo much fun! I mean... if you arent fishing for food, and can afford to lose fish, it is a BLAST! It will teach you a lot, and the tight is just so much fun. I dont take anything heavier than a "medium fast" with 10# mono out most times.
A whole year?
Maybe for 2021. Next year there's some different lakes I want to explore for bass as well as target a Northern Pike. It would be a fun challenge. My record for an ultralight is a ten pound channel cat on a 5 foot rod and 6 pound line. I didn't do it intentionally though.
. . . and just use Eagle Claw ultralights . . . Nah, I've got some Berkeley's too.

Overall I'd say a dam good day of fishing lol ! Excellent job brother! Love fishing pools under dams and waterfalls when I can get to them. My favorite smallmouth hole in NJ is a pool below a dam.
