Glad to see Jeb is still doing the classics as well. I love the commentary for modern movies but the ones for the classics will always be my favorites. "She must be on the rag"
I just wanted to thank you for posting all of these. I found your channel just as the world went to crap and you have consistently provided me with a bright spot when things got rough. Thanks and keep up the great comments!
What I understood from TCM when I saw this movie was that Maggie was Brick's "beard", and that Skipper was actually Brick's lover. The implied reason for Skipper committing suicide was that he realized that he wouldn't ever be able to be with Brick. So tragic. 😔
Yup. Tennessee Williams (who wrote the original play) made far more blatant references to Brick’s repressed sexuality in the play but there was absolutely no way any of that would have made it into the film back then. It was already controversial just how sexual the film was for it’s time.
wrong. 🤦 I know this is a year old. I'm sure no one cares about this but it's sad that the 22st century is the time for dummies to destroy anything intelligent. Bric used "everyone thinking it was gay love" as an excuse to not talk about it 👍
You know Mr. Jeb, this was a complicated TV-drama-like movie to follow, but your drunken-Big-Mamma interpretation is worth reviewing this classic film again; not just for the acting (some very good, some exaggerated) but for the fact that somehow I’m picturing my own grandma now, while not being able to stop laughing! The southern tones of this movie truly suit your “style”. Wonderful job.
I don't think I've ever seen this movie, but I've seen a play version of it. As I understand it, the original play is different in the same way that the original book of Breakfast at Tiffany's is different from the movie version. There was some content that Hollywood didn't want to acknowledge existed back then, so they "sanitized" these original stories for the movies.
We read the play in one of my college classes and it more than implies Skipper and Brick were lovers and Skipper committed suicide because they couldn't be together.
Paul Newman always frustrated me with his behavior toward Elizabeth Taylor, I mean just look at her! She’s the reason why the movie is called a cat on hot tin roof🔥 I’m glad they made up by the end
@@broncos1855 She wanted to boink. Since he wasn’t into it, she was trying to lure him with the prospect that getting an heir would put him in good standing with Big Daddy.

I laughed my *ss off!! This is the greatest "analysis" of this movie, that I have ever experienced!! I saw the film first, when I was very young and unaware. But strange things were awakened in me, each time I saw Elizabeth Taylor, up on the screen!! (My family and I were just "white trash," from Central Illinois, by way of Tennessee.) I only wish that Tennessee Williams' real, true version of this story could have been realized in this film. But unfortunately, anyone who understands, and appreciates, and feels this play, will never be allowed to produce a true film version. But "A Truly Heartfelt Thank You" for your efforts herein!! I will return to this "intense explanation" of this fabulous play, whenever I feel lost and misunderstood!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Personally I consider this compilation of noun inflections as a touch of a god.....a genius .Genius. Food for thought.Definitely. Plenty to chew on.👍👍👍😚
Elizabeth Taylor was stunning in this movie. I recently bought the same shade of lipstick she wears. It doesn’t exactly go with my undertone but oh well. I never read the book (we did Streetcar for A Levels) but plan to soon
Have a feeling that casting a Burl Ives type was done on purpose. To illustrate that Big Daddy is so overconfident and entitled that he had no shame flirting with a woman as stunning as Liz Taylor, even tho he had absolutely no shot. A sexy Big Daddy would be an interesting new twist tho - adding genuine sexual tension between he and Maggie.
I watched this the 1st time last summer, it was entertaining (and Elizabeth is divine), but I take it the novel/play is more interesting with a more appealing backstory
the play is more blunt about what happened between Brick, Skipper and Maggie , in the film its sort of skirted over because of censorship. And the ending isnt quite as happy (Maggie literally has to blackmail Brick to sleep with her by witholding his licor, but the implication is she does get pregnant so I guess thats good for their future,
@@javiercs006 nope, Ten Williams himself left it ambiguous in the play. But the possibility of him being gay and/or the possible nature of Kips and Bricks feelings for the other where discussed more in the open than the film.
maggie didnt like her husbands best friend so she tried to seduce him to blackmail him, brick found out and got mad, ashamed bricks friend committed suicide.
Wow, that looks like a boring story with a bunch of unlikable people. Thanks, Jeb, for talking me through it so I don't ever have to watch it. You saved me.

Well, I'll be danged. I knew the general outline of the story but figured it was too boring to watch (still think I was right there) with those fake accents and Paul N (ugh). Now I understand a little bit more - still a yawn fest. Thanks for explaining it coherently.

Every time the word “Mendacity” gets said in the movie, take a shot. You’ll have alcohol poisoning in no time!
just watching brick drink makes me feel like i have alcohol poisoning.

Forgot about the happy ending where Maggie reunites Brick with her cat.
LOL
I wish this was a full length real time commentary I could use over the actual movie
