You were asking why they treat Alina like she's different/not white it's because she's half "Shu". The different countries in the books are based on different countries in real life. The actor who plays her (Jessie Mei Li) is half Chinese. The place Alina lives and grew up in is based on Russia, it's on the border with "Shu Han" (the China insert) and there's a lot of historic conflict between the two places and racial tension between the different ethnic groups in the books.

No lie, me simping over Ben Barnes was the whole reason I watched the show when it first came out. I saw like a clip or something of Ben Barnes in it, at that point I didn't fully acknowledge that he was Prince Caspian, even though I knew at the same time it was weird. No lie because of my ADHD I watch a tv show and youtube at the same time because I can't focus on just one thing at a time, but anytime it was a Ben Barnes/Darkling scene, I paused my video and gave it my full attention because he is that attractive. (think about alina talking in the carriage with ivan. they don't discuss grishas, but she focuses on how being different is bad, as in racially different)
Ben Barnes is an amazing actor. I think the best work he's ever done is in BBC's "Gold Digger". Archie, the one who plays Mal is in it, too. It's a very different character than Mal. I highly recommend it.
