  • As kids, you don't always get what you want. For a lot of us, what we wanted was video games! I go over all the various reasons why we missed out on games as kids, and why retro gaming is the perfect solution now that we're adults.

This question made me think of "missing out" on games a bit differently. When I had my PS1, my best friend at the time had a N64 with Super Mario 64. I wasn't interested in beating the game, but I loved going over to his house and just getting in to Bob-omb Battlefield with the Wing Cap and fly around aimlessly. Years later when I got the game for myself, it lost that mystique as soon as I beat the game. I think sometimes having access to a game makes us not appreciate it as much anymore - like when you may or may not have a hard drive full of roms and isos. Possibly.

As a 21 year old retro gamer/collector I can confirm it’s pretty hard to play games when you aren’t alive yet ; the great thing is that my parents were alive and they grew up on NES ,SNES and mega drive so they support my hobby and interest as well as playing older games with me ! :)

I remember back in the day one of my neighbors his parents were divorced and he had a REALLY HEALTHY library of SNES games, the kid even had the Super Scope! I guess his dad was compensating him for the time they didn't spent together. As I kid I thought he's was very lucky to have all those games but in retrospect I feel bad for him.

It’s usually PC games that I remember missing out on, because my family always had a very run-of-the-mill PC that couldn’t run hardly any games with higher end graphics. I remember not being able to play Return To Castle Wolfenstein, at least not sufficiently well. Once I was older and got a better PC, I finally played through it, and it was…ok. Lol

I was a big Sega Genesis kid in my teenage years, however I completely missed out on Ranger X. I didn't know anything about this game until my early 20's. I picked up the cartridge off of eBay and fell in love. Ranger X is my "Rocket Knight"

When I was a kid I didn't have an NES, I had a Famicom. That meant getting a different set of cartridges to play than the NES. Most games played the same, some slightly different, but virtually all were in Japanese so I missed out a lot when it came to story. I did have an adapter which allowed me to play NES carts, but the other thing about Famicom games was they were much cheaper (knock offs and such). So those games I couldn't buy I rented.

The one that crushed me is a Christmas memory that is as vivid now as it was back in December '95.
A couple of months before Christmas, my friend gave me an issue of Gamepro he was done with, and while reading it through, I saw a preview for Mega Man X3. I love Mega Man X, I can speedrun the first 2 games, I play them through a few times a year, and they are just near perfect games to me. Back then, it was just a love of all things Mega Man though, so I got really excited at the prospect of a Mega Man Christmas. I would go on to read that preview every day up to Christmas, and MMX3 was the only thing I put on my list.
So, Christmas Eve rolls around and I can't sleep (I was a teenager at the time, but we were fairly poor, so Christmas was always an exciting time for me) and I'm sneaking out repeatedly to check the tree. Looking over everything, I see it: a box with the shape and dimension of an SNES game; now there's really no chance I'm going to sleep, and all I can do is daydream about Mega Man X!
Morning comes 'round, and it's the usual wait for the folks to get up, breakfast, all that, and then we get to the gifts. My Mom is handing out the gifts one at a time, we watch everyone open each one, etc., and I expect she will give me 'the' present last. After all the hype, all the expectation, I start to unwrap and see that semi-gloss black. A little more, and "Yesssss, a ... ... ... SN Program Pad...?"
    A controller...a...controller. I was devastated.
I really tried to be excited for my Mom and thankful for the thoughtful gift, but I suppose she could see it anyway and told me she went all over town and no one had the game. I would come to learn - years later - that the game didn't release until the end of January '96 in North America, but my frustration was compounded by not even being able to rent the game for another year after release because the one Blockbuster in town only had one copy and it was checked out every time I went.
When I finally did get to play the game, it was sweet, but I was never able to track down a copy to buy with the money I had earned from working in the neighborhood; I'd go on to use that money to buy Chrono Trigger, the first game I bought for SNES.
It took about 6 years for me to finally track down a loose copy, and another 5 before I'd track down a complete one. A childhood friend of my wife that she hadn't seen in years came over one day about 6 years ago and we got to talking games and he saw MMX3 and couldn't stop talking about it and how it was the one game he had always wanted that got away. His story had parallels to my own, and he wasn't able to afford the game as he had gone back to school, so I gave him my loose copy. Mega Man fans have got to stick together :)

Growing up, my parents were never able to afford video game consoles when they first came out, so I normally got "hand-me-down" game consoles that my mom would find at yard sales and such. I was always at least a whole generation behind with every console I've owned. The Nintendo Switch is the first console I've ever owned where it's been current gen at the time I purchased it. Emulation was a godsend, as a kid, and I never would have been able to experience games like Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Harvest Moon 64, Metroid Fusion, etc. otherwise. I would have missed way, way more as a kid if it hadn't been for emulation. One game I remember always wanting to play, as a kid, was Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo on the N64. I had seen it at a local video store and I remember being really interested in it.

@Resident Zombie To be fair Majora’s Mask got butchered BIG TIME by the 3DS version, that was a super disappointing remake for many, it certainly was for me. It’s really not indicative of just how good the game really is, it felt like Nintendo messed up in every way imaginable. Ocarina of time 3D was very faithful though, so if you didn’t like that version you wouldn’t change your mind from playing it on the N64.

For me, I remember being like 5 years old and at my mom's boyfriend's at the time's house and playing Super Mario Sunshine. This was around 2006 I believe. Knowing very little about games at this time. I didn't get past the airport at the beginning of the game. I got Fludd and thought it was the coolest thing ever and just started messing around with it enjoying spraying the water. I loved it. However, I didn't have this game for my GameCube at home. For quite some time, I wondered if this game even actually existed or if it was just my imagination until I decided to look it up on the internet one day and found out it was real. That was some experience. I hope to get an original copy for my GameCube soon.

I'm so happy to have finally got around to playing Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. No way I would have known about the Turbografx as a kid. Thankfully, the Castlevania: Requiem Collection on PS4 exists and I grabbed it on sale. The collection could've included more than just the games (art, the option to change to the original voice lines), but as someone who never played Rondo or Symphony, having two solid emulations is important enough.
This would then lead me to buy a used DS to play the GBA and DS Castlevania games, and those are great so far. As a kid, I would see these games come out pretty much annually, but never bothered to dive in. The formula needed a breather and we hungered for the next big thing. Thankfully I am now ready for it and happy to finally do it.

    i. Regional barrier: There are many great games that were never released overseas but stayed in Japan for a long period of time so we couldn't get to play them before.
ii. Language barrier: Some games couldn't even be played without knowing the certain language like for example: Without knowing Japanese, we couldn't play certain games. At first I had a bit of a hard time thinking about the question since I managed to get into retro gaming at a relatively young age. I mean in a manner where I was specifically looking for them since we had a PS1 with the only game on it being Monster Rancher as far back as I could remember. Anyways, back to the question, I started thinking about it in a different manner when all of a sudden it clicked. I didn't have a Wii or a DS during their time. I didn't particularly mind at the time, but now I look back and I think about all of the games I couldn't play at the time. I was able to play a few games visiting someone else's house, or even getting to play Wii Sports Resort in gym during the 6th grade at times, but I never had them. Even when I did eventually get a Wii in 2013 my library wasn't really that huge. I just started off with New Super Mario Bros Wii and Sonic and the Secret Rings. I enjoyed both of them, even if Sonic and the Secret Rings does have really bad controls, but there's still so much more out there I couldn't go back to yet. I have memories of Mario Kart Wii that I want to revisit these days, I want to play Mario Galaxy 1 for the first time, I want to play Smash Bros Brawl and experience the Subspace Emissary. Gosh dang. For the longest time I didn't even have either of the Wii Sports titles. It was only until this summer that I finally got my hands on Resort. Oh my god that game is such a fun time and I'm so glad I can finally play this game whenever I want. It was quite a close call too since I just barely won it on an ebay auction. It had the full cardboard box with the Wii Motion Plus addon and the sleeve for it and all of the papers and such, and I only got it for 21.72. If I hadn't bumped up from 20 dollars to 21 dollars, I would've lost. It's one of the most exhilarating moments I've experienced with collecting since it was pretty much the first auction that I won that other people were participating in. Oh gosh and the DS, there's so many games I want to play on it that I missed out on. I could never get the DS Sonic games, or gosh the DS Pokemon games. Heck I just missed out on Pokemon in general for a while just because I didn't have the hardware for it, and even if I did, I was way more focused on Monster Rancher. I still am to this day. Like I have all of the mainline entries of it, and I've only played the first two generations of Pokemon. Yeah I might not pick up physical copies of the other ones until the 3DS games due to the current prices on them, but I at least want to experience them. I can't wait to get an R4 cartridge so I can play them on my DSi for relatively cheap. There's probably a lot more out there i could go into with other systems, but the Wii and the DS are the main ones that'll always come to mind when it comes to games that I missed out on when I was younger.

My first ever experience with Doom was the SNES version. At the time, I had no idea I was playing one of the very worst ports of this game that was ever released. I wore that damn game out and absolutely loved every single minute. I had no complaints about graphics or input lag or any of that stuff because I had never even seen the PC original except in small screenshots in magazines. A few years later, around 1998 or so, I got my hands on the PS1 port, and I just couldn't believe how much better it was. It wasn't until probably 2005 or so when I finally got to play the PC original for the very first time. Of course I was blown away by how much prettier and smoother it was overall, but it also made appreciate just how good the old original 1993 Doom really is, design-wise...even a severely watered down barely playable SNES port was somehow still fun and atmospheric enough for me to name it as one of my all-time favorites. I recently tried Doom on the Sega 32X, the Jaguar, and the GBA through emulation, and even though those ports aren't that great either, I would've absolutely loved all of them if I had played them first back when they were released.

I'm so old that my only video game console growing up was the Atari with knobs that played Pong and Breakout. (Can't remember the name/model of the console.) We found it after my dad died and sold it. My son grew up with Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS, and still has his GameCube and Wii.
I decided recently to get a Game Boy Advance and start playing retro Game Boy games, so everything is something I missed out on as a kid! I'm having lots of fun learning about the system and playing the games -- great distraction from ongoing pandemic restrictions. I'm currently playing Zelda: Link to the Past and Spyro: Season of Ice. (Am also having fun with Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2.)

Shadowrun sega genesis. Love that game but completely missed it as a youngster. Same with Rocket Knight adventures.

I remember reading about the N64 a year before it came out and wanting Mario 64 real bad and couldn't wait. I still haven't gotten it yet.

For me that game is WWF No Mercy for the N64. I was aware of the game, but being a bigger fan of the rival company WCW I never gave it a chance. So glad I've since played it as for many it is the gold standard of wrestling video games and one of the most modded. It's a lot of fun, and I can't recommend it enough. 😎🤘

I grew up with a Super Nintendo and bought gaming magazines every month, but somehow I failed to understand how awesome the Mega Man series is. In fact, I almost completely ignored it, which is incredibile, considering that Mega Man is now my favorite franchise. I only started playing Mega Man and Mega Man X games in 2013 or 2014. Back in the 90s, Capcom was just synonymous with Street Fighter to me (and I guess to many other kids and teenagers).
