The family car sector has come under fire in recent years, with buyers abandoning traditional saloons, hatchbacks and estates in favour of SUVs, MPVs and premium models.
However, VW is keeping faith and has just launched a new version of its long-serving Passat, which is now entering its seventh generation. Bosses have been careful not to mess with the hugely successful Passat formula, so the newcomer doesn't look much different to its five-year-old predecessor.
I've had my Mondeo Mk IV Titanium (with its 2.0 litre Mazda Duratec heart) for ten years now. Just the most enjoyable car to drive - even after all these years. I've looked after the maintenance well and the engine is bomb proof. Having said that, the biggest issue I had with it a few years back that nearly made me switch up was the high pressure fuel line which, amazingly, sprang a leak and nearly turned the car into a bomb. But I have a great mechanic who found a way to fix it cheaply instead of redoing the whole fuel system, which would have ended the car. I thought about updating to a new Mondy at that time - and even test drove one a few years ago (and a BMW - don't ask!), but the Mk V really is a totally inferior drive to the Mk IV. They put all the bells and whistles in it and then messed about with one of the best steering/suspension packages ever made and chucked in some really average power plants. Why?!
So, no. even though she's looking a bit tired these days, I'm keeping my 25 grand and sticking with the old girl until either it conks out or I do. Whichever comes first! I just love it.

I like to buy Mondeo Mk4 but I want to know if the petrol engine good? I don't like any DPF diesel sensors, I had Octavia and always problems with DPF and injectors.

yes but, the interior centre console isn't as modern as the insignia or passat. Also, it design isn't as good as the insignia.
Connie Taylor I drove both ,passat and mondeo .Never tried insignia though. Passat used higher quality materials..but drives terribly.Mondeo on the other hand , has it all acceptable quality, fantstic -dynamic drive reliability, room and absolute pleasure to drive!

You're talking about the Ecoboost engines. They aren't "all that". The Passat 2.0 TSI is 210PS vs the Mondeo 200. Passat does 39mpg vs the Mondeos 36. More to the point, the VW TSI engines are miles ahead of anything direction injection by another other company. Ford only followed suit when they realised the TFSI and TSI engines were ruining them in the petrol market.
But, Mondeo ' s 2.0L Ecoboost engine is terribly uneconomical!

At all videos the passat is much better than insignia I am not at the same opinion. The insignia is more comfortabale for long distances I think and is probably better for family car. This is a matter of taste (That is my opinion :D).

@MrZaralios It depends what you describe as a "better" company. For instance I like value for money cars which VW definitely aren`t. They have better quality built but also are too expensive. The design itself is much worse than Fords.

i agree with Moha....i have had 2 opel insigna's and they were fantastic. Opel is really so much better than Ford (which drives like a world war one tank) and the featureless VW passat...all good cars but OPEL all the way!!
Ford always could build a great chassis that handles well. Mrs has an old MK1 Mondeo estate, its a beaten to death old nail but it still handles and drives so unbelievably well.
we get a whole new passat over here in america :D

+Mario Losberg I dunno, I've got a late 2014 Insignia estate and it's better quality than my girlfriends dad's bmw 7 series from the same year. Maybe not overall build quality but everything just feels and looks nicer in the Vauxhall, and with onSTAR, intellilink, cruise control as standard it's far better technology wise and on average gets 15+ better mpg all for about 30k less
Vauxhall's have come a long way and right now I'd put them above Ford, VW, Volvo & Skoda. Infact, I'd only put Audi and Mercedes above them in terms of big cars

Ford does own Aston Martin, I noticed some Ford vehicles have car designs which come from their subsidaries, like an example being the Ford Flex looking like a Range Rover. :D
Actually it was the 2.0 ecoboost in the escape having the recall due to a fire hazard, 90,000 of them. They also recalled 370,000 due to corrosion leading to steering failure. And yes, I knew about the recall for the VW's. That was in 2009, the Ford recalls are in 2012-2013. Me or my familys have had 1.6 TDI's, 1.9 TDI's, 2.0 TDI's, 2.8 vr6, 3.6 VR6, and 4.2 V8 and non with fires :)

@ Brandon Friesen, the recall of 370,000 Ford vehicles was for the crown vic, due to corrosion. It is aimed at people whom drive in salty and humid climates. Considering the Crown Vic's design age, I could pull up any vehicle of that age and it would have corrosion after many years of driving in salty and humid climates. "the recall affects 73,320 Escape SUVs, and affects only the 1.6-liter EcoBoost unit."
I've driven both the Insignia and Mondeo both with diesel engines (Elite v Titanium). The Mondeo is bigger inside with more boot space as well. It handles a little better as well. Overall though, I preffered the Insignia.

They may have worked hard on ecoboosts but they aren't all that great. The 2.0 and 1.6 is prone to catching fire and the 3.5 V6TT let my dad down in the middle of no where.

The Mondeo has always been the benchmark, even for luxury cars. Take a look at the MKV Mondeo, the A4 and A5 won't stand a chance. A guy I know is getting rid of his 2007 7 Series 5.0 For a 2014 Mondeo soon.

Don't know, have Mondeo and to be honest I have never drived better car.... So big,and yet so quiet. Really great comfort and much, much gadgets inside, utility, seats are awesome and supportive in the corners. Stearing is pure awesomness, smooth and easy. Love that "On the hill start" technology. Hm it beats VW? Could not agree more. FORD all the way..

I had an octavia and the dsg transmission failed after 50000k, wouldnt buy another VAG product, overpriced and over hyped.

not sure which is the better NEW car buy, but for me the mondeo is a fantastic used car. I own a 2009 titanium TDCI and it has everything I would expect a decent daily driver to have... Cruise, AC, DAB Radio, MP3, 17" alloys, Multi disc CD, stop start keyless ignition and hands free bluetooth. Even some nice touches like foldback mirrors, trip computer and half leather seats. Bags of room for everybody inside, a cavernous boot and a silky smooth 6 speed box. I average 60+mpg on the Motorway and 48 in mixed driving,
It cost £2995 from a dealer 4weeks ago (Feb 2018). Mint condition with 12mths warranty 80,000 on the clock
The equivalent passat would be £1500 quid more and the insignia... well the less said about insignias the better
All of these would be great second handers though if you spend a bit of time to find the right one... I have no idea why anybody would want a new car when you can get so much for your cash and still drive round in a car that feels new.

I absolutely hate to hear motor journalist moan on about which car is 'fun to drive'. What exactly does that mean? Then they t go on complaining about steering feel. ALL modern cars with electric power steering, in my experience, all feel the same way. Peugeots to VW/ Audis to Nissans: very light and soft, which to me is a very good thing because it reduces fatigue when battling city traffic. And since when is a Ford Mondeo better than a proper german car? I dont think any person who owned a Mondeo (bought with their own money) will agree after 5 years of ownership. Mondeo reliability was so bad that the local dealership dosent sell Mondeos at all. Their Ford lineup consists of Ford Rangers, Focus' and Fiestas. You hardly see Mondeos on the road here ( yes cars 5-10 yrs old) all junked.

Its nothing special i know, but im talking about this video. So its wrong to say i dont know what i talking about. The old Mondeo (2007) do not has any chance against the Insignia (2008), so a Facelift is not fair to compare.

anyone that sees a market will try to fill it; it's all about money when you have a business, duh! The reason Ford didn't fix the Pinto issue at first is because it was 'cheaper to let them burn' - the cost of fixing each car was high. But you know what? That attitude meant that car safety as well as the attitude to people's health and safety was then changed. We can thank Ford (partly) for our recent general health and safety regulations. Also, Henry was a pacifist.
Well, everyone I have met or talked to who like VW says that they are best no matter what kind of rubbish they produce, like the 4motion. And Ford made alot of 4wd cars, but since car sales went down a few years, they focused on what they sell most of, which is FWD cars. The next gen Mondeo will have 4wd. Think of it this way. If Henry Ford chose to not give Adolf Hitler money for building the "Volkswagen" everything in the VAG group would not exist today.
German cars are typically well made and stylish, though VW are definitely not BMW or Audi standard. In terms of style though, the VW is the best there and it's looks upmarket inside too. But Ford's are extremely fun to drive and better family cars than most rivals due to a lot more space and practicality. But although my head says the Ford is better, the VW's desirability can't be ignored :S
Ford is better at making Petrol units than diesel units, they basically do what Airbus do to Boeing and take everyone elses TDCIs and claim it as 'their own'. That said, most of the newer TDCIs Ford offer are refined, e.g the 163PS works like bread and butter with the Powershift auto box. But Ford puts their own design and developments into their petrol range mostly, the 1.0, 1.6 and 2.0 ecoboost engines all outperform their TDCI ranges apart from MPG.
did you saw the video? +-8 Sec from 0-100. PSA engine's aren't rubbish. They have the latest engine technology. Injector's with 8 hole's instead of 6. 2000Bar CR injection, High quality piston's etc....
Ford changes the ecu so it has other setup than the Peugeots/Citroens. Type in google: Ford tdci tuning-fast ford. You will read how good they are. Loads of potential and if you do this with a fiat engine. It will break down. Ford day's of being Bad are already long gone my friend.

"is much better" Acceleration = 2.0 CDTI 160hp: 0-100 in 9.5 seconds, 2.0 TDCI 163hp: 9.4 seconds. This result is not better in any way, it has 3 hp more and it is equally fast. Only 0.1 seconds difference, and this difference is not noticeable. In compare to premium brands (BMW, Mercedes, Audi), these two diesel engines are slow, and Fords double-clutch gearbox is in compare hopeless slow too. So your statement "much better" is again, bullshit.

Kuga beats the shit out of your opel. Ford needs 5,4 sec from 0-100 with the Focus RS with 2.5 Duratec. Insignia is not fun to drive as a Mondeo, steering is lifeless, unresponsive, not doing anything.
Sorry but i don't compare a Transit or a tourneo. I'm compairing Ford vs Opel. Ford Fiesta st is now the ultimate small hatchback. There was a test between a Peugeot 208Gti and the new Renault clio Rs. Test proved that the Ford was the best handling and was more fun than the rest. Just like The Mondeo vs the insignia, same story. Ford is better to drive and The new interior is amazing. Mondeo2.5 S-max2.5 Kuga2.5 Focus RS 2.5, All Duratec engine's are much faster than yours. 6.0 v12 730hp and a 4 000 000 million dollar price tag. Opel don't have these type of cars. Ford doesn't make new cars in the category as the cascada. The mokka is a jeep and a Kuga 2.5T slashes this car. It even beats a 2.0T Insignia with 220Hp. Ford is and will always be better than Opel. Insignia is not as good as Mondeo.
I'm in the car business so i know what i'm talking. Opel have very nice design etc... but are ok driving cars. Not at the level as the new Ford's. I have 3 car's. Ford focus rs 550Hp stage4, Ford S-max 2.2Tdci 200hp with a 250Hp Remap and 550Nm of torque. and a Ford mondeo 2.0 240hp with a remap to 280hp and 410Nm. They are all great cars. The S-max is even better than the Mondeo. Because it has more (feeling) power and you can drive in comfort. Do that in an insignia and you'll get 100 Euro's
My Track car has 550Hp and 650Nm of torque. Never saw those numbers on an opel, or they would explode. And Yes i drove an insignia. 2.0 Cdti 160hp. even Farmers in the neighborhood bought an insignia so they could expend their tractor car's...... Shitty car. Wait till you see the New Premium Mondeo Turnier. With amazing design and beautifull interior. Opel has nice design but their chassis, driveline are crap

You're laughable. You really are clueless. The A5 starts at £25,500 for a basic A5 sportback. Literally, no equipment comes with it - or a very stingy amount. Add this to the sleek, yet bland styling and the basic, gruff 1.8 engine and you don't have much. For the money, you could get a highly specced Titanium X Mondeo with a 2.0 Ecoboost with Powershif transmition and loads of standard equipment. You could also add many options for the same price, meaning the Mondeo is a better car for less.
indeed Ford is tryn to push its brand image above the normal passenger car norm where Vaxhaull,skoda,seat,Vw,toyota,honda etc exist to a superior league like the BMW,Audi etc with the Mondeo. Hope it works this time, in ma country Ford tunes it cars 2 much for fuel effeciency destroying its fun charecter,Fiesta got a 1.5 tdci mill in India with the least powered engine in the segment wile VW,Skoda,Renault,and all gave 1.6 diesels with above 240NM torq, Ford just 204NM that too with tall gearing.

if you shift to 6 on 80 kmh it struggles a bit but than the turbo kicks in and OFF YOU GO LIKE A ROCKET!! ofcourse THE new Fords are as good as a BMW or audi

the old generation Mondeo weighs around that much only the new Ford fusion or new Mondeo in US weighs around 1460kg for 1.6 l ecoboost and 1710 for 2.0 titanium with AWD,these weights affects its performance a lot even with 240 hp &340 Nm at around 3000 rpm the petrol cud just tick 100 kmph in 8.2 s, so the 140 hp and 163 hp dieselswill be slower 2, and if fords diesel engine is heavier than petrol, it will be a performance dud. A VW passat with just 200 hp and just around 320NM s faster
The mondeo is absolute the best, i own a mondeo. I have tested the passat its way to expensive for what you get. And what the host of this show was talking about the quality of the materials is absolute true. Its just an overpriced car with bad materials. The insignia dont drive that well. The engines arent fuel effeicient eather.The mondeo is absolute the winner in space handeling and price. Only the rest money of the mondeo sucks.
About Opel (Vauxhall). Guys would you buy a car from a company firm that ows billions of dollars? As far as i know the could shut down and end up like Rover . Imagine giving 20.000 Euros or Pounds and ending up with a car from a company that closed. What im saying is there must be a reason why they are on the edge of the cliff . Not saying that the Insignia is not a good car. Its a great car but what im saying is that Opel (Vauxhall) is a terrible company. :)
@TomozukiII When i say "better company" i mean as in Safer Vehicles, More Reliable vehicles , Sales in Europe and Sales in U.S.A, Technological Progress and last but not least the status and image a company has. For example, VW is know for building the TSI engines in my opinion are the best engines in market.In Greece Skoda's are for taxi drivers ofc there is nothing wrong with that but people buy them cause they are cheaper not better. The more the money you give the better car you will get.
@scimg Refinement not seen in any passat. By Matt criticized the plastic panel in VW. The Passat has to change. It seems car of the last century. The mondeo is magnificent! Rugged, fun to drive. VW is people's car. Ford has a hit in dirigiblilidade unmatched in all categories. Finally, those who enjoy antique and bric-a-vw leads. Ford is for those who enjoy pleasure driving, besides the better finish. I do not know what the insignia is doing here, because this category is the focus and jetta.
In these type of cars "fun" is not the case. I believe when you buy such cars you care about the attitude the style and the power these cars hold. A VW has much more power than a Ford so does OPEL/Vauxhall. (VW>Opel/Vauxhall>Ford).The Mondeo might be FUN to drive but you are NOT buying a sports car! These are family/sedans and not RS/ST,GTI and OPC ... These are family cars... Luxury comes first when in such type of cars and not "fun". If you want "fun" buy a sports car. Vw wins in my opinion :)
Why is it always assumed that everyone wants to drive round corners flat out all the time? Some cars suit different driving styles better than others. The original Focus was praised for being the best handling car ever made but the ones Ive driven have always felt twitchy and required constant correction to keep in a straight line. I would prefer my Astra mk 3 over one any day, and the focus was so bloody ugly! Just my opinion. Always thought VW dull but well engineered.
Ford does make a luxury flagship car, it's called the Ford Taurus. Just a shame it's not available in the UK though.

The KA in Brazil had a OHV engine. The European KA stopped with this in 2002, which is over ten years ago. And I know that the Galaxy and Sharan were the same cars, and they both were rubbish. If you think all Ford engines are ohv, search for ford pinto engine, and if you think all vw's have ohc or doch engines, you are wrong..

The mondeo had a full tank so it's 70kg+ heavier. so that's why it's slower.
The setup is the real key to get a good acceleration. Yes Opel engine's uhmmm i mean fiat engine's are very unreliable, loud, unrefined.....Just bad. The 2.0Tdci could get 300k km normal use.
Yes it's maybe 3hp more but it's a tuned-down engine. Next year there will be 195hp out of the same engine and only 1turbo. It's a PSA engine. it's a peugeot block with Ford-tune. At least it's better than the FIAT engine that opel uses in the insignia. The engine that the Ford has, is much better than the fiat engine from opel.

I deff drove an insignia before. 2.0Cdti 160hp. Rubbish diesel, unreffined, loud, not powerfull, gutless suspension..... New Mondeo is a much better car. You never drove one. I Still want to see a 2.0Scti vs your 2.0t. Bye bye Opel, Ford would say

The Passat is yet another example of over-rated 'German' quality. Cheap scratchy plastic, poor fitting trims and foul finish are all standard with Passat. My top spec even has no DETC or anything good. Only heated seats. Such a poor qality car, oh, and it caught fire once. The boot never shuts on all 5 Passat Estates I've had. It's just a dire car.

Skoda superb isn't as "superb" inside...especially texture of the plastics and fit in some points. Feels more like an octavia stretched and is actually worse on the inside than its smaller brother. Oh yeah and looks funny in the front and hideous in the back. Actually it doesn't seem as a contender after all, even the prices aren't that much good...

The Insignia in this video is the lowest spec available on the market.It is missing even the front fog lights.The Passat as far as I can see is the top spec.Don't tell me that is a truly comparison when it is obvious you are sending your regards away from the Insignia!

wtf are you saying. I have a S-max and weights 1.69 ton and it perform like a audi a5 or bmw 5 serie. A MONDEO never weights 1.7 ton NEVER max 1.55ton great car. better than bmw 3serie and opel insignia much better go to honestjohn and go to top 10 large family MONDEO NR 1
I have just bought an Insignia sri the best car i have ever had. It is 10 times better than my vectra which was also a great car. The other 2 cars dont do nothing for me the vw looks rubbish and the interior is very dull. Also the ford dont look much better even though its the titanium x model.

The petrol 1.0 Ecoboost is an engine not designed for Focus drivers with high milage requirements - it's a compact car and the 1.0 is for tottering around town, on the school run, going to the shops. Engines like the 2.0 TDCI or even the 83.1 mpg 88g/km 1.6 105ps are for motorway milage. may explain why all '95-'02 Fiestas have such low mileage. Ford isn't the most reliable brand, but they are better rated than VW. The Japanese, not Germans are best for reliability. Honda have best engineering.
We are talking about the stock engine, none will tune his engine like that. It is fast enough. I dont care about Opels bad days are gone since a long time too, the engines are better too. The new 2.0 CDTI is quiter and not rubbish.
Again, that's only brand perception. As I've said, take a look at a Mondeo TXS or a MKV, the A5 looks as sleek as a parachute compared to the MKV Mondeo. But it's all yur own opinion. I think the A5 looks smart, but so very dull; like the Passat.
Mondeo is the best its slightly less aggressive when it comes to power because power comes only by 2000 rpm whereas in passat its jst 17510 rpm, still mondeo is the pick, i doubt the performance of 2013 ford mondeo because its 2 heavy,
I like the passat and the mondeo. The insignia is the worst car i have ever driven and even my old mk3 mondeo was better. VW and Ford always seem to make decent cars that appeal to the driver. PS- hand break on the insignia is dangerous
Sorry but i dont like the guy who's making to review, because he always wants that sporty feeling. I mean i have been driving with new passat daily and i dont see why i have to have that sporty steering in daily driving? Passat wins in my obinion.

Because Fords 2.0 TDCI diesel engine with 3 hp more than the Opel is a shitty Peugeot engine and never better than Opels own. By the Way: In longevity is the Insignia the better car too (school note: 2, Mondeo: 3-)
Still Ford is better. The insignia was on the 35 Place on autobild dauertest. The Old S-max from 2007 was on the 19 place with the old 2.0Tdci 140hp. Now i want to see the new 2.0Tdci 163hp. Much better than Opel insignia
Well i ve heard of 2.2 tdci, but its not refined as a mercedes 2.2 cdi or bmw 2.0 diesel, but defenitely powerful, hope Ford brings all new 2.0 and 2.2 diesels to ma country India , where disels are dominated by VW s TDI
