You're very welcome Crestavid. It's a great tool. The new version has the option to download height maps that other users have submitted. You can also change the water height now too.
Check out the kinggen Community page on steam or discord. The current version of kinggen includes links to community maps too. It's in the advanced menu. Hope this helps!
That's great! You're welcome Entity. I'm pleased it was helpful. There are loads more tutorials for KingGen when you're ready to try more advanced features. Have fun!
Thank you so much for this! I'm new to PC having come from console. I consider myself lucky when I was able to hook it up, download Steam and actually get the game running. Was scared to try anything outside of vanilla, but you made real easy. Made my first map with ease and playing it now.
This worked perfectly, a great Tutorial indeed. I just generated my first 12000 x 12000 Map, had very good control over the Customization. Thanks for this video !
Took me a couple secs to figure out the file location but finally did it. Miles better then the in game generator. Shits booty. Thanks for this, very much needed. Cheers
You're welcome. Things have changed a little bit since this video but it's still pretty useful. Just make sure to use your new poi list each time you use the software.
It's rediculous how much quicker it is. That was a total of 50 seconds compared to the 20 minutes it took my in-game map to generate. Working on the height map tutorial tomorrow as I think that's the area most people will need help with. Pick your own home city and drop it in 7dtd!
Hey thanks for the video. I'd definitely be real grateful for an advanced map gen video. I've been curious how to make a custom UK map and don't know where to start with height maps etc.
Hi Luke. I'm hoping to get that video done soon. Struggling to get the time at the moment. I'll go through finding maps online and fixing them to work with KingGen. Then also editing them to work a little better. Incidentally I'm starting a let's play series using my UK map tomorrow. It'll also be filled with Compo Pack prefabs.
Yeah that's a popular request. The quick answer is to drop your custom POI files into the folder that contains the vanilla ones then get kinggen to create a new list as described in the video description. Try that and get back to me if you're still stuck or join the kinggen Community pages which is linked in the first video. Let me know how you get on John!
I'm pleased you liked rh video. Thanks for letting me know. Fingers crossed KingGen can be updated to accommodate any changes brought with a20. It's got more chance than NitroGen, that's for sure.
Be warned it doesn't work great with a20 now. I think there was a naming convention change for traders that might cause an issue. Possibly because of tiles? These tutorials were made before a20 which brought huge changes to the game and kinggen wasn't updated to support the changes. Watch the fixing kinggen video to get you a little closer to working but you still won't get the tiles and roads that a20 brought.
This looks fantastic. I do have a question however. I usually play multiplayer games where I host. Will this work where my friends just join me through Steam or do they need to download something extra? What about with Compo added? What would need to happen to make that work? If you could help with these questions that would be great. I'm really looking forward to trying this out!
Hi Kazsco, yes you can use the maps in multiplayer but they need to be added to your server, as do the buildings from the Compo Pack. Unfortunately I'm not sure exactly how to do this but I can tell you that others have discussed it on the compo and kinggen community pages. There is a link to both of those in the description of the poi video. I'm really sorry I can't be any more help but I'm sure you'll get your answer from those links.
The other tutorials will show you how to draw out the size of cities and towns and how to draw roads or mountains. But to place specific buildings where you want them is tricky. If you're familiar with editing the poi list you can specify exactly which biomes or hubs a building can be placed in. It's not something I've covered in a tutorial though as that's quite advanced and not easy to explain. The current version of kinggen allows you to specify these things but will take a bit of experimenting with to get it close to what you are looking for. Sorry I can't be much help with that.
@@TallmanBradGameplay Thanks. will you be anytime soon covering that video if you learn. example adding titanic in water or something like that of your own design. and i know nobody can make it but as a example. because i also want different skyscrapers other then the 2 that are on list
Does this still work with A20? I'm wanting to create a Wastelands only make with Desert scattered in but Not figuring out how to with the in game generation.
It does, but I'd recommend watching the newer videos in the series. Be warned that a wasteland-only map will stop your initial 'go to the trader' quest from working. That initial trader needs to be in a pine forest biome. You can fix that with the biome tutorial.
Sorry Hox. Yeah I meant the newer videos that talk about a20 instead of the original kinggen videos that are for a19. You only need to paint pine forest under the trader, if you weren't wanting a large pine area.
Yes. Get your desired spawn coordinates from the ingame map then enter this into the spawn xml file, removing any other coordinates that you don't want to use. Take care with the Z height. I *think* you can accidentally set it too high or low. Trial and error maybe. You can edit the xml in notepad. Make sure to save your changes.
Ideally try Teragon for 3rd party map making now. Kinggen has long been unsupported. I'm is still useful in the map making field but certainly not for producing maps for a21.
Yes. You'll have to draw a flat height map or turn down/off all terrain settings. Turn on smoothing. Then draw the city biome the size of the map. Remember you won't get tiles (new roads etc) with kinggen.
Yes. Pull up the playlist when you get a chance. There's one on making height maps, obviously one covering using the basic included features, then there's one for the city map layers. There's alsorts. But, kinggen is a little behind the times now, however there's still a lot of fun to be had with it and it currently is the only way to reliably make a map with your own heightmap. Until Teragon surfaces.
Thanks Medusa. I've just seen someone ask in the 7days chat if there's a tutorial anywhere for how to do the next stage, the height map. I'm doing that next. I don't have the heart to hijack the conversation advertising my channel haha.
You can do it! Be warned you might need a small area of pine or burnt biome under a trader to make sure the initial quest to go to a trader works. Some have said it doesn't work with wasteland only.
Unfortunately kinggen wasn't updated to work with a20 so you will get some problems I'm afraid. I'd only recommend using it now for testing heightmap edits. Have a look at the Maptoolz series to see better options that are currently available.
Rough? The ground is rough? You can choose the 'smooth' option. I'd recommend giving that a go if the terrain is too rough for you. There are a lot of settings to play with.
no, not that. the map generation is not bad if you stick to default, but if you tweak the advanced options you end up with a mess: maps that have no roads at all sometimes, all towns, cities and villages stuck in one lump at the same location, etc...
Ah I see what you mean. If I'm not happy with a map I just hit enter straight away and it has another go. The settings take a little getting used to to get it the way you like it but it's worth it when you do get the right balance. There are other videos here explaining how to place cities and towns exactly where you want them and how to draw in roads. Then also how about using a heightmap of your own town/region? Plenty fun but I appreciate it's not perfect.
