Japanese CONVENIENCE STORE Breakfast FOOD TOUR - 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson | Tokyo, Japan

  • I’ve been a huge fan of Japanese food ever since I was a kid, but as an adult, for some reason I never prioritized visiting the country until January of 2019, when a job with a Japanese company hired me to film a video of the Asian island nation for five days. I extended my trip by an entire week so I’d get the chance to explore on my own time, and it’s one of the best travel decisions I’ve ever made. I am in love with Japan, and in this video series you’ll see why.
My Film Making Kit ► kit.com/davidsbeenhere
When I learned that convenience stores like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson are extremely popular places to grab some breakfast in Japan, I knew I had to see what all the fuss was about, so on the morning of my second full day in Tokyo, I went around the Shinjuku area of the city to find the best convenience store food! Come along with me on my convenience store breakfast food tour of Shinjuku, Tokyo!
I left my hotel, the Hyatt Regency Tokyo, and set out on my adventure around Shinjuku. The Shinjuku area is like Tokyo’s Times Square, as well as its financial district. It’s beautiful, but this morning was really cold. Luckily it wasn’t too far from my first stop, FamilyMart!
I targeted the onigiri section and grabbed the spicy pollack roe and salmon varieties, as well as some sushi, which cost me 678 Yen, or roughly $6 U.S. Pretty good deal! Next up, Lawson!
One thing you should know about Japan is that people here don’t like to be filmed without their permission, so if you decide to go to Japan to vlog, be mindful of respecting the people around you.
On my way to Lawson, I grabbed a cold coffee from a vending machine for 100 Yen, or just $1 U.S. Vending machines are everywhere in Japan. There are over 2.4 million in the country!
I found a Lawson in the basement of the Shinjuku Center Building, where I bought a grilled pollack onigiri, a hand roll, and a green tea mochi for 460 Yen, or roughly $4.16.
It was a lot warmer when I stepped back outside and headed to my final stop, the local 7-Eleven, which happened to be right under my hotel! There, I bought a wasabi & seaweed onigiri, some salmon with rice, and a rice-covered soft-boiled egg for just 440 Yen, or $3.98 U.S. Then I headed back up through the Hyatt Regency Tokyo, a luxury, five-star hotel with 700 rooms and 6 restaurants, up to my room, where I set up my convenience store treats!
I started with the coffee, which was dark and tart, and then dove into my 7-Eleven findings. I went with the wasabi and seaweed onigiri, which was sticky with a nice crunch from the seaweed. Fantastic!
Next was the soft-boiled egg with sticky rice. The rice had a different flavor, was just okay. The salmon with sticky rice was sticky with some super fresh salmon! There’s so much rice, but it was ridiculously tasty.
Next, I went with the hand roll from Lawson, which had minced tuna inside. This is one of my favorite things to get in Japan! The minced tuna is so flavorful and the seaweed is absolutely delicious.
I followed that with the grilled pollack roe onigiri. I love onigiri so much, and this one was unreal. The creamy roe provided a nice contrast to the sticky rice.
I went with my sushi next, which came with five pieces of salmon sushi, some pickled ginger, and some soy sauce and wasabi, which I mixed together. The sushi was extremely fresh and flavorful and it was even better with the pickled ginger. Probably my favorite sushi of all time! It blew my mind!
The spicy pollack roe onigiri was next. It was very similar to the grilled pollack roe, and contained a lot of fish eggs. It was outstanding!
I finished with the green tea mochi, which is a gummy Japanese dessert made of a glutinous rice paste. They usually have something in the middle and are popular treats during the Japanese New Year. Mine contained a plum jam that was so fire!
Who knew convenience store food could be this amazing? And at only 1,724 Yen, or $15.56 U.S. in total, it’s so inexpensive for this amount of food!
I hope you liked this video of me buying and trying foods from Japanese convenience stores! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel!

Hey man, I had to tell you and I hope you see this because of all the onigiri I see you eating. There’s numbers in the onigiri package 1, 2, 3. You rip #1 that goes from the top and around the roll vertically like a pack of wrigleys gum. Then you pull the plastic away from the onigiri, steps 2 and 3

Just a note, for those going to Japan. Don't hand people money directly. Put the money on the tray on the counter. That's how they do it in Japan. Onigiri, there are directions on the wrapper - 1, 2, 3. That way you don't take the nori off with the plastic.

This is now my favorite food vlogging channel, bar none. I love that David puts out a new video almost everyday, no other vlogger works as hard. And he has no annoying habits like some other vloggers (over enthusiasm, weird faces with every bite, non-stop thumbs up...). The only thing I would change is the way David says "mutton", mut-ton, not mah-den, but that's just me nitpicking, sorry:). I love all the vlogs he did on Miami, and the recent tour of India was epic. This one in Japan is bound to be awesome as well. Japanese and Indian food are also two of my favorite cuisines, along with Spanish and Italian. Do a tour of Spain and Italy after this, please, and also more in the US like New Orleans, Austin, DC, NYC, Boston and Canada, Toronto, Vancouver. This channel deserves a lot more subscribers. I hope to see it grow to be the biggest food vlogging channel on TH-cam. Keep up the good work Mr. Hoffmann, you rock! Thanks for brightening up my day everyday with your videos.

That is not how you open a triangle onigiri. There are numbers on them. You start with 1 pull down like the arrow shows. A strip comes off from the top all the way around. Then pulling the 2 & 3 side tabs it pulls the plastic between the rice and seaweed. When you do that it puts the rice and seaweed together.

oh boy. I just discovered your channel and saw this....now, I am looking at my calendar to see when I can go home!! I wish I could just walk in to Japanese konbini(convenience store) in the States!! Enjoyed it very much. Also, it's sooo nice to hear that someone outside of Japan loves Japanese food! Arigatou for the video! P.S. Have you ever tried to pull a little tab on the very top tip of the plastic wrapper of the onigiri that has a little picture of triangle box?! If you haven't, I hope you try it. That's how it's supposed to open onigiri and that's when you see the magic;) Although, I like how you open and wrap the seeweed around rice, that way, we have a little place mat,:)

I don't think he ever claimed to be an expert on japanese culture. He was happy and excited to be there and wanted to show us what he experienced there. Obviously he respects and enjoys the culture and trying to learn more about it. I really don't understand why so many people here are so desperate to scold him. Making mistakes is how we learn apart from you guys who are such experts on japanese culture that you even had the mother milk with chopsticks as a baby...

Sorry about so many people getting triggered by how you opened the wrappers, its of no consequence, what matters is seeing how much you enjoyed the various foods and explained their flavors and quality. Food should be fun and enjoyable and that's what you conveyed here. Thanks, and keep doing what you do 🌸🌿

idk if im wrong or something but when he says 'always put the ginger on top of the sushi' is that the correct way of eating it? cause i've always understood it as you eat ginger in between every sushi, because it 'rinses' your mouth, so that you can taste the other sushi's as well, am i wrong??

Cara tem números na embalagem é só puxar onde está o número 1, depois o 2 e por último se houver o 3. É ultra fácil abrir os onigiris você só complicou. Kkkkkk 😂
