    Nice video James, thanks for sharing. Worth noting those new bearings probably won’t last long either. Having pulled the case halves together using the case bolts you would have introduced preload on the crank bearings and you didn’t remove it afterwards. Also surprised you didn’t pressure and vac test it?
    Either way, thanks for the video, It was great to see inside one!

    I have a question please?
    Should those bearings be noisy? The saws only been in production maybe 18 months.
    Next - I’ve had the 500i here downunder nearly 18 months used commercially on Eucalypt hardwoods for firewood production.
    I have a near new 880 & 661C also along with the 500i.
    On the 880 & 661C - I run 404 chain.
    Bought a 100 ft roll of 404 chain and the chain break & make tools from the same local Stihl dealer I’ve bought all our saws from in recent years.
    But we can’t run 404 chain on the 500i because Stihl in their wisdom haven’t designed and manufactured a 404 drive sprocket for the 500 I. 😡👎
    I’ve told the dealer I want one for the last 18 months & nothing. 😡👎
    It’s a lot easier to have interoperability between the 3 big saws if they all run the same chains & bars and drive sprockets.
    As it is now we have to buy 3/8th chains already made up from Stihl to suit the bar lengths we have for the 500i, or buy yet another 100 foot roll of 3/8th chain specifically for the 500i.
    Surely it’s not that hard to design and manufacture a drive sprocket for the 500i to run 404 chain?
    It’s my opinion that Stihl engineers need their ass kicked with a size 12 steel capped boot until their noses bleed.
    They make great saws - but they are deaf and oblivious to their clients needs!
    That’s why company’s like Oregon et al GB etc are all making aftermarket bars etc for Stihl saws, because the Stihl engineers aren’t listening to their commercial clients.
    I bought my first Stihl saw in 1982.
    Worked as a Forester for this States Conservation department buying batches of new Stihl saws for all our forestry fire crews in varying sizes every budget year, in the dozens.
    Then another 30 years in logging and milling buying all our company saws from Stihl.
    You don’t get a more loyal or better long term client than me.
    But I can’t buy a drive sprocket to run a 404 chain on my new 500i?
    Stihl wouldn’t have sold us one of the first batch of saws into this country 12 months ahead of the rest of the world at a discounted price, if we weren’t long term professional users of the product, because they knew we would give honest feed back on the product.
    Then when you do and it’s such a simple thing, to be totally ignored?
    I’m about ready to start slitting some throats at my local Stihl dealer if someone in Stihl doesn’t start listening to their clients and acting on the feedback.

    Is it possible that cleaning the saw case has introduced dirt into the bearings?

    • @MachineryNation
      @MachineryNation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I doubt it, but anything is possible. The bearing were not really that bad and would of gone again but as it was apart we replaced them.

    • @dcvariousvids8082

      Replacing a couple of bearings, would have adding little to the overall cost.

  • @jimssawsnstuff8903
    @jimssawsnstuff8903 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    How much did the rebuild cost vs a new saw?
    I’m a bit shocked the bearings needed replaced on a saw that new, maybe it’s to do with the fuel injection vs carburetion Reduction in less atomization and less oil distributed to the internal parts...

    • @MachineryNation
      @MachineryNation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The rebuild cost would have been around £400 including labour if we were to have done this in our main workshops. A new saw would have been around £1000 so it was considerably cheaper. As the saw was 12 months is was defiantly worth doing. The bearings would have lasted a lot longer but while we were stripping it down we thought we might as well replace them. :)

    • @jimssawsnstuff8903
      @jimssawsnstuff8903 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you saying the bearing replacement was preventative? Your words were more to the affect that it worn and rattled, so that sounds a bit more dire.

    • @Aint1S
      @Aint1S 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimssawsnstuff8903 I'd venture a guess on saying that it's a new saw and new lighter design... Instead of grabbing 2 different saws, they're going to keep the do-all saw in hand. It's only logical for as powerful and light as the saw is that they run it for everything.
      He also said 12 months of use in a commercial setting. Pretty sure they're going to pin it to win it and get out to another job. Time is money.

    • @jimssawsnstuff8903
      @jimssawsnstuff8903 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anybody follow this already know what the saw is...my comment was about the extravagance and extent of the rebuild and the lack of acknowledgement of the reason for the pre-mature wear of the crank bearings, if that was actually the case. My 460 big bore would likely be a match for the 500i...reason they are going to computers is there are very few of the younger folk out there with the mechanical aptitude to actually look after a saw...

    That was a very extensive tear down and quite a few major, presumably expensive parts needing replacement. At what point would you have considered this to be beyond economical repair? I did look up the price of these new so am aware this is a high end machine but surely with labour and the number of parts required this still added up to a significant repair bill?

    • @MachineryNation
      @MachineryNation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, we found that more parts needed replacing than first thought as we were filming. So we continued to complete the project. If billed this would have been about £400.
