  • The Russian two on one or Russian tie up is a power control that can lead to takedowns, and control once you hit the ground, leading to several quick submissions.

Now I am almost 30 and would like to go back to training (I had been stopped by injuries). I have two options in my area - either to go for a one gym where I could train bjj 3x a week under black belts in a respected gym with afilliations to Brasil or 2x bjj +1x mma under a purple belt coach in a small family gym. Great demonstrations Ramsey. Watching this, I immediately think of 2 moves from a Karate Kata called Heian Nidan (some other styles call it Pinan Shodan, and still others call it Pinan Nidan).
    I think the Kata’s movements represent a variation of what you’re doing with your arms but with a foot sweep added in. Since Karate, and the techniques represented in Kata were originally meant for self defense, the movement is intended as s takedown rather than following the opponent down to get a submission for competition. But I believe the overall principle of the techniques are the same.
    I know most people probably aren’t interested in analyzing Kata and trying to puzzle out the original or practical real world applications but I personally enjoy it and find it fascinating.
    I also know many will say “Kata are useless! You should prove your theories by getting in an MMA ring!” Well, that’d be a great pressure test but I’m 41 and on blood thinners due to a recent illness and the doctors are still trying to figure out if I only beed the blood thinners for 6 months or for life. So I ain’t getting in a cage with anyone and I’m perfectly happy to practice and analyze Kata in a safe and controlled environment.

    Much love coach! I miss the QA series a lot. 🙏
    Edit: A question for the QA series - what are the key differences between an amateur and professional mindset when fighting? I’ve seen plenty of out of shape pros school very in shape amateurs. Are they prepared to die? Are they tempered by battle and they don’t feel as much pain? Do they feel it but their mind is simply stronger? I know there’s a difference but it’s hard to discern exactly what those differences are. I’d enjoy hearing your philosophy on the subject.

    Ramsey, can you explain what the purpose of jumping during a spinning back kick is? I saw someone doing it on instagram and i expressed that i didnt see the point in it. Alot of people said it was more powerful, and i suppose if you jumped forward it would be, but the guy in the video didnt jump forward, he just jumped straight up. Alot of people also claimed that it gets rid of friction between the pivoting of the foot and the ground, but to say that there is so much friction between these 2 things that jumping would make it noticeably more powerful seems absolutely ridiculous. Is there any reason that jumping kick should be used in general? Creating distance is the only thing i can think of.

    • @Sbv-25
      @Sbv-25 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In an older video on the channel, jumping kicks are used to close the distance rather than make them. It can lead right into a clinch
      If it was jumping straight up, that could be used to make distance instead
      The point isn’t power, it’s position
      On spinning back kicks, there’s a few videos about it already on the channel. A skip is often used rather than a jump though

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Jumping straight up? In the context of a taekwondo tournament, if you are very close to your opponent, jumping straight up to do a jumping spinning back kick can allow you to push yourself away from your opponent mid air while scoring a point.
      If you are already outside of the pocket, there is no need to jump in any context while doing a turning back kick.

      I wouldn't mix styles so quickly. At that age just pick something close by where the coach understands kids. Kyokushin karate is maybe better style for combat. But fir the first few years won't matter that much if it's karate. Up to 12 their body learns from multiple styles. So gymnastics ballet swimming all good. After 12 body prefers specialization. Mma seems to be the most fashionable for combat these days. If they put the work in. Though one self defence expert also recommended improv classes for street fight defence

      @@peterrobson7674 i am at the end of my knowledge. I was told with just six months they could get a solid understanding of western boxing without the need at that age for actual sparring. If they practise what they learn at home once or twice a week might be enough. Check in with the sensei. They have to learn about sacrifice though. If there other things taking up time even if it's just playdates or chillaxing balance and rest also help improve. With my kids they both train four times a week one twin also takes kobudo once a week (till she becomes old enough to take part in kobudo seminars). They'll want to please you still at that age. At 5 my kids need to go more often because they don't practise at home or school . Their sensei gives more time and effort to those who turn up more regularly. So two weeks before a competition they'd get two hours a day 6 days a week. Your kids will learn faster at their ages. I notice there is an exponential drop out rate. Loads of yellow belts a few brown. I think the advice is its more important than they maintain their pace. Competence in karate is like getting a driver's licence.
