- ♥ Thank you so much for stopping by and watching my video ♥
I started these pockets back in May and the embroidery took much longer then expected, but I am very happy with how it turned out!

Historical interpreter who works in 18th century attire, having separate pockets mean I don't have to move my stuff into a different pocket when I change outfits! And it's really fun to see what will fit and what will not, (biggest so far is a copy of "The Odyssey, haha) much more practical that modern "women's" pockets
That is awesome! women's 'mock'ets are definitely a sore point for me in current fashion... I am always extremely happy when I find a dress with real pockets in a store :)
I contemplate right now if the skirt I am working on should get edwardian style pockets sewn into, or if I sew seoerat ones like in this video, to wear underneith . . .one set of pockets for all skirts/dresses Sounds good, but I am unsure of how practical they are, how well do they wear underneith just a more modern skirt useing less fabric instead of the very poofy historical ones and things like that. . .what do you think?
I made these last night sans embroidery because I don't know how to embroider. I wore them to work today after ripping holes in the much smaller pockets of my dress so that I could access these pockets tied around my waist. They were fantastic! I will change the ribbon waist tie to a wider band because without a corset on the weight of the pocket contents will cause the thin band to dig into the skin. Also, I think I'll go ahead a sew the pockets to the band instead of making them adjustable. Mine kept sliding forward.
Wow this is amazing, lady! When I was a girl, I had the American Girl dolls - and felicity was the doll from 1774. She had pockets like these, and I've always wanted to make some for myself. I can't get over all the detail you did! So amazing.
Thank you so much! I loved the American Girl dolls growing up! I had the Kristen doll :)
I kind of wish you'd shown us how you did that embroidery. It looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing this.
I bought a piece of scrap fabric (its really thick linen with chickens printed on, that was really expensive from the roll) from the fabric bin of a store and i immediately knew I wanted to do something like this! Thank you so much for the tutorial :)
at Fort Steele I can carry pounds of items in my pocket! It's my favourite. I threw a hard cover book in there the other day, and you couldn't tell (however, I could cause it hit my leg with every step haha)
Historical you would wear a poofy underskirt dempening the impact underneith, or even a stiff understrucktur like a crinolin
Just lovely. I think it was because of discretion, that is why women prefered to add with their outfit. Only needed one very elegant set for outing gowns, evening gowns, etc. But more simpler for everyday wear. They were the handbags of the time. Thank you for sharing.
Love the addition of the rhyme and history behind it. It's those stories that give life to art and it's history (Ah, a reference to my educational background, a shameless self-plug).
This is the first time I've seen anything on pockets as a separate article. A fantastic fix to a current costume dilemma I'm having. Wonderful 🌞
Thank you for taking the time to make these detail steps on the construction on your 'Robe a la Francaise'. I can't wait to see the videos for the rest of the pieces, and of course, to see the final product. Judging by what you've already accomplished, it's going to be wonderful. Enjoy being a mom, Helena is just beautiful. Cheers
carriebtc thank you so much for watching! I am still working on the videos but it has been taking a while. I don't know when the next video will be going up but my goal is sometime in May. I also will have an exciting announcemnt with the next video!
I can understand, being a mom takes it time and energy. Wish you the best. We'll wait until the next installment of your beautiful project. Good luck. cheers.
Thanks for sharing, I just got my Stocking, Pockets, and Mittens. The Pockets also comes with Italian, Scotish and American Styles. great video
You might be interested in this book: The Pocket: A Hidden History of Women's Lives, 1660-1900. It is in paperback and was published on July 28, 2020. It is quite detailed with a lot of historical information from the court documents of London and what people had in their pockets--either because of being robbed, or from being a shoplifter with huge pockets of loot!
I finished my American Pocket with embroidery before hand of your advice. I am making my Mom an Italian Pocket which is smaller than the American Pocket. great video
Thanks for this! Wish I'd watched this before i cut my fabric out! lol... finding it hard to embroider the edge areas too!
Your video serie about construction of your robe à la française, is INCREDIBLE ! :D
I ended up on your channel by searching help about the construction about 18th century stays (I'm planing an Outlander costume, I saw you had the books :p) and I'm reaaaaallly happy I found your channel ! You're great, thanks for sharing your amazing work !
Thank you :D If you have any questions feel free to message me, I am happy to help and I would love to see how your outlander costume turns out :)
You're welcome ! and thanks, I will! :D I just received some JP Ryan patterns and hope to begin soon.
Very happy to find your series of instructional videos. Thanks!
Thank you for watching :)
They're so beautiful! Your work is stunning! Not gonna lie though, I'm a little bummed we didn't get to see any of your embroidery on these. But I love that you added a little bit of the pocket's history. As well as the history behind the rhyme. I always thought it was a cutesy literal nursery rhyme! Thanks for sharing! 💗
So excited to see something from you in my notifications!
I'll have more videos coming out this year! If you want to see what I've been up to lately, please take a look at my instagram :)
I noticed Outlander in the background and immediately hit subscribe 😊
Jenna Wallgren I wondering if anyone was going to say anything about that 😄 I love the series so much!
Loved the historical tidbits! More please in future videos :)
BEAUTIFUL.
Loved the history info, Jason from England
Love the story behind the nursery rhyme...which does sound familiar.
Do you have the pattern for the lovely embroidery? I love that pattern!
Katherine A the pattern I used is from the America Duchess blog. If you Google American Duchess pockets it should pop up 😄
I love this! you are so freaking talented!
Thank you Frankie ♥
Was anyone else trying to read the title of books on the shelves in the background?
For sure! There are some good ones there and some I haven't read or can't make out... loved the tutorial too and the idea of adjustable pockets.
I wish we still had beautiful large pockets like these! Although anything would be an improvement on the terrible things they call pockets in womens clothing today lol!!
Wowww such huge and gorgeous pockets! I want to make some nowwww
I wish you could have gone a little bit more in depth in the embroidery, though, I'm learning and it might've been helpful :/
Thank you for posting your progress on the construction of each piece! It's helped me get a really good idea of patterns to look for and how much work will go into my own planned outfit! What did you use to help with embroidery? Did you already know some when you started? It looks so daunting!
Thank you for watching the series Heidi. I did cross stitch as a child, but most of my embroidery for this project was learned by watching youtube videos or perusing embroidery books and blogs. Starting can be a little overwhelming, but once you get the hang of it, it is quite relaxing.
I wonder if lucy wells from harlots is loosely based on lucy locket!
How would one get something out of the pocket if it is under the skirt? I can’t visualise how this would work.
The Comrade there are openings in the side seams of the skirts 😊 The skirts are tied in the front and back so there is usually a 8-12" slit on either side that makes it easy to get to the pockets 😄
Outstanding! Love it:))
When will u be doing more videos I love ur videos xx
Soon, I am currently working on an update and announcement video :)
Did you do the embroidery by hand? I would love to see it and learn how
I did do it by hand, there are a ton of amazing embroidery channels on TH-cam that are very helpful! It is a very relaxing skill.
Anybody ever tried wearing these under modern clothes? I'm thinking of making some to wear to work under my dresses with full skirts and wide legged pants. So, I wonder, has anyone else tried this?
Oh I wanted to ask... How did you put your fabric in a hoop after you had cut it out? And where did you get this heat pen? I want one haha
I used a small hoop so it wasn't to difficult to use it most of the time, but near the edges I had to only have half of the fabric pulled taut in the hoop, or not use a hoop at all but use my fingers to keep it taut. I got the pen from Staples, (I have also seen them in quilting shops) it is actually a friction pen but I discovered that it worked on fabric when I was in school. The brand is FriXion Point. Just has a heads up if you buy it, I recommend you test in the seam allowance first because it has left a slightly visible mark on some fabrics I have used. I hope that is helpful :)
Enchanted Rose Costumes very helpful thank you!
What is a ladder stitch?
Hello Cheryl, It is an invisible stitch that looks like the rungs of a ladder as you sew it. If you google it, some diagrams will pop up and show you how it works :)
Did you self draft the embroidery pattern?
I used the embroidery pattern provided on the American duchess webpage. The original pattern design is from the Costume close up book.
What kind of thread did you use for your pocket’s embroidery?
I used regular DMC embroidery floss 😊
Nooooo!!!! I NEED to see the part on how to attach the binding to the bottom corner of the slash! Everyone skips that step and I have no clue how to do it :(
Gio Drakes take a look at this site. sewaholic.net/sewing-a-continuous-bound-placket-the-simple-one/ let me know if it helps!
so pretty
It was all by hand 😅
Enchanted Rose Costumes oh my god 🙈 do you remember how long it took you to make the pockets? 💖
A few weeks 🧵🧵🧵
Enchanted Rose Costumes always looks so quick with editing 😂💖 started watching the playlist from the entire dress now 💖 so fantastic to see it come together 💖🌈
Where did u get the pattern for pocket hoop
The Pocket Hoop pattern is from Norah Waugh's Corsets and Crinolines, the pockets are from Costumes Close-up :)
I really enjoyed this series of videos. The only thing is the music was putting me to sleep. Lol.
KaHa Rocks thank you! I will be switching up the music in my next series 😉
Your embroidery is lovely
Thank you :)
Could we possibly get any information on the embroidery please? ^_^
The vines were made using the Stem Stitch and the flowers were made from a mixture of the Long and Short stitch and Satin stitch. I also used French knots and the Fishbone stitch in a few places.. Needle 'n thread has some great videos on her website www.needlenthread.com/videos
Enchanted Rose Costumes thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!
No problem :)
At least they had pockets, most women’s clothing now just don’t have pockets anymore and if they do they are small.
Men, these series are awesome and resourceful!! ❤...but boy the music is horrendous, its killing me 😂
@@mirzadakobilic6440 at the time it was the only music I could find and I hate it now too ... 🙈🙈🙈 I am hoping youtube will make it possible to remove the music without removing the voiceover one day.
@@EnchantedRoseCostumes haha okay, don't worry about it! After all, you did a great job with the costume and showing the process 😊😊🌷
For pockets that big, I'll take having to tie them around the waist!
I LOVE your videos but I'm starting to hate this music XD XD lol
You and me both 😂 sadly this was one of the only royalty free songs I could find when I first started 🤦🏼♀️
