    Thank U Starry, after finding your channel 3 years ago Susan and I started out with a 8 x 16 box garden now we have the slopes and other bad ground areas lined with compost and bails of hay ( given to us free due to it having mold on it ) and as we get this heavy rain our back yard is GOING CRAZY we planted very early and covered with plastic like Mr. Hilder showed in earlier video's and looks like a BIG CANNING summer. Thanks Prayers & Blessings Paul & Susan North Georgia

    Hi Starry, I live in town and I do container gardening. I have a back deck and for about 7 years I have been growing green beans, carrots, beets in long flower boxes. I also grow tomatoes and peppers and even cucumber's in 5 gal food buckets. the reason I container garden is I am very bad at weeding, with the containers there are almost no weeds. I did put in 2 apple and 2 peach trees 2 years ago. I also have some half barrel planters, they are filled with rhubarb, blueberry bushes and 2 grape. on the side's of the house I have strawberry's and a nice size raspberry patch. I am living proof that a lot of food can be grown in containers. I always love you video's. Keep up the great work.

    Starry, although I agree with you that raised garden beds waste some gardening space, I need raised beds because of back issues. We have 7 acres so space is not our concern. For me to be self sustainable and to continue to grow a garden, I will be putting in raised beds. Not everyone can bend, stretch, squat or get on our knees. Not everyone is limited on space as you are. I will still be doing the BTE style in the raised beds, though. :)

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You make some very valid points...And yes raised beds do assist with people with limited mobility. I will add though...over the five years our garden floor has RAISED itself...the soil that is built and created has increased to the point where our bending is limited!! So pretty cool..we have a raised bed type garden without the raised BED containers!!!

    • @marbarnes7063
      @marbarnes7063 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, when the whole garden floor is raised, I still have as far to bend as I am standing ON the garden floor, unless I'm at the edges. lol Our garden is about 200 foot by 75 foot. We keep down sizing because it has become so hard but I think raised BTE beds will keep us as self sufficient as possible for a while longer. It is awesome how BTE builds up the soil. I'm also adding cattle panels for trellises for things like cucumbers and beans to make harvesting easier.

    Starry so glad you back home & had a good time. Okay I live in town. So this year instead of planting pretty flowers every where. I got garden items. Peppers both sweet & Hot. I put those in my Garden box that husband made for me a few years ago. I planted potato's in behind the garage on a finch line that gets mostly full sun.. I put herbs in my planters that have my fig trees in the back room here. I have tomato's that I will be putting in between my Iris's & Lillie's & Phonies I have 8 plants of those. Well now I was silly & got 75 Candy Onion Plants they are not your green onions they are the real deal. This is where I having trouble trying to find a spot for all those they do have to be in a raised bed type area.. Hmmm Where to put them...... Help any ideals would be great They need to be in Prepare raised beds at least 5" high and 20" wide Beds should be spaced on 35" centers with 15" spacing between beds. Is what it says. Then Plant approximately 1 in deep with 5 to6 inch spacing between plants & they water by roots not by top? Well I can run a water hose for that part. Just where the heck am I going to plant them. I did go to tractor Supply store they have a cows feeder that would work perfect .. $169 Dollars.. Oh for the Love of My God! .... 1st no wonder farmers are having such a hard time making a go of it. 2nd WOW... So I am on the look out for a container that I can use that will not break me... lol

Nice to have people putting the info out there for others to choose from. Thanks!

      Starry Hilder I just read this written by Dr. Chalker-Scott from Univ. of Washington: "The more tires are shredded or ground, the more surface area there is for leaching and decomposition. But whole tires do this as well. Tires contain a lot of chemicals and leach elements like lead and zinc. In fact, tires used for constructing artificial reefs are so toxic that they created entire dead zones. Fact one: tires and recycled tire products degrade and leach chemicals into surrounding soil and water. Fact two: vegetables will take up heavy metals like zinc from soil and water. While there hasn't been a study focused specifically on vegetables grown in tires doesn't mean that these two documented facts don't happen in these situations."

    Sorry no tires,wood or cement in my garden. There is a purpose for raised beds, mine used to have no sides. Some people have so many rocks they have to raise garden. For some its their health. Some people can only raise root crops in raised beds because of clay soil. There is no wrong way to garden. If I had those tires in my garden I would think of them as a round raised bed. I can't picture 4000 1gallon pots.
