Thomas Merton (January 31, 1915 - December 10, 1968) was an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist, and scholar of comparative religion. On May 26, 1949, he was ordained to the priesthood and given the name "Father Louis". Merton wrote more than 50 books in a period of 27 years, mostly on spirituality, social justice and a quiet pacifism, as well as scores of essays and reviews.

Seeds of contemplation was the book where by suddenly I was no longer alone in my wakefulness. No one around me knew what it was to " be". I was alone in holy awe until I discovered Seeds. Then I had a companion who knew the way. Getting prepared for the cloud of unknowing, for it is only for those who unreservedly follow Christ. I'm ready after 30 years and am 60 years old.
Absolutely love getting as much information on Thomas Merton. So relevant for today. I'm slowly working through his books but am an artist so I love to listen to his writing. I listen to him over and over hoping it will eventually sink in! I have a terminal illness so I find him incredibly helpful. Not looking for sympathy. I'm 69 and had a great life. Needing to prepare for the transition with courage. Thankyou.

Anyone found a way to listen to these lovely recordings without commercials? I use to be able to listen directly through this website and now even here there are ads. It really breaks the peace if it all.
I'm certain that it is not possible for me to properly express how very grateful I am for these readings. I have been listening for months since I found them, and they are part of the day for me. (There may be a bible verse that conveys that same idea, but those words came to me when I was waking up today. I really feel it's true too)
Its a real practice of contemplation when suddenly in the middle of this peaceful verse of the depths of my being a fast talking guy comes on rambling for 60 seconds on how I can loose some weight.

After Ramana Maharshi for so long, this is a huge leap, because Merton fills in many of the mysterious gaps of Maharshi's teachings, in a manner that relieves my fear of the ego learning too much. As a lifelong epistemologist, the inertia to give birth to ideas needs to be checked... And it seems there is no figuring this out, as Merton says, but.... Ending the entire habit of simulating myself as a concept alltogether, which has been so incessant that, wow, that's just wild... To be utterly nonreactive to the external world, a dominant cause in mere abidance.. And to cease "transactionelationships"... Secrets though, maybe they have a place, or maybe I'm still a child that wants to call out the emperors with no clothes, seemingly everywhere.... They only bother me for their misframing of the appropriately confused, and uh... delight in their pain... But surely I'm not seeing my part in my own resentment, because I feel deeply wrong, evil even, whenever I want to "tell the truth" somehow, as if I'll ruin things, and if I'd have been enabled, maybe I'd have been the same. Or maybe I am, and inauthentic to negate my ego for the wrong reasons maybe?
