It's a traditional folk song dating back at least 100 years.. The origin may be African-American. I remember hearing it as a child over 60 years ago.

Mother sang us to sleep with this old lullaby, and I was a child in the 40s. In the 60s, Peter, Paul and Mary sang me to sleep in the dorm and I learned to play and sing it with my guitar. It's a soothing melody around which Reilly, Mackenzie and Tim spun their beautiful harmonies. I still have that guitar.
