Patrick, watch this... The only time Metallica played Escape live:

What I like about Ride The Lightning is the icy feel to it, if that makes any sense. It feels like you are listening to the album in an igloo in the middle of Antarctica.
I have always felt this. Blue, cold, echo-y and relentless haha
IM TRAPPED UNDER ICE-Ah
The echo-ingly cold sound and even the drums having that right feeling of smashing ice always did give it that Icy feeling
Yes i agree i also like how it feels Icy
So crazy y’all say this cause I always listen to ride the lightning in winter it just fits the vibe
Don't understand the hate for instrumentals at all. Recently got to see Ktulu and Orion live and it made me love them even more.
Agree. The ending solo on Ktulu is so underrated
Please tell me you guys are doing this master and Justice again! I’ve been really wanting to see Patrick check em all out with his new metallica ear 😂💪🏼
Please!! ❤
So we can hear again how ONE is the worst MetallicA song ever written/released?
No thank you
@@8tonystark8 forgot about that. I will say, anyone who says that shouldn’t be listening to metal
i particularly want them to redo master. i might be alone but up until the black album i feel like it was recorded the best out of every other album. also some of their most legendary tracks
@@user-gx3cf2ot2q I agree. Plus, I think master of puppets is probably their strongest album front to end. I feel the other albums have usually a song that I'll skip past, but I don't think there's a single skip song on puppets.
89 Seattle live reaction is a must reaction. It’s great.
Seattle 1989 has the Best overall performance of 🔔z🤘🤘. Cliff's intro from Day on the Green 1985 is the Best🤘🤘
So glad to be apart of this entire community. Absolutely love seeing music bringing people together. ❤️
Also, when does Chris' game come out?! Id 100% check it out!😊
Get well soon Patrick! Sending all my love, good vibes and well wishes to you. ❤️
October 17th I think! Wizard With a Gun!
I love how different people are. To me, lyrics might just dissapear and only instrumentals might exist. I hate that Metallica havent given us instrumentals on last two albums, they are so freakin good :(
I dont care about lyrics at all
Fun fact: Escape was played only single time at "Orion music + more" in 2012, as a part of full RTL album that was in setlist that day. Check out how they refurbished the fading out outro)
I also can't wait and love the content still waiting for that shogun reaction lol
!!!
Escape is amazing! And there is nothing wrong with fade outs.
It's such an odd thing to care about, especially not listening to a song again because the end fades out. 😅
So what you are talking about is in 2001, Metallica was in San Francisco and went to The Presidio, a former military barracks and began recording St. Anger. They never finished those recordings because James Hetfield went to rehab. They are essentially the beginnings of St. Anger and when you see the documentary Some Kind of Monster, you get a glimpse of those recordings. They were never officially release, but I am sure you can find those recordings. Some snippets were used for the St Anger album, the rest were demos.
Guys as I giant metallica fan and audio dabbler I cannot wait for the Garage inc disc 1 reaction. This to me is the best Metallica has ever sounded.
Several people have mentioned this and woo that makes me excited for it!
I love someone who just started listening to metallica and only heard the albums once tries to tell people who have been listening to the band for 40 years, what "metallica is supposed to be."
It’s his perspective on what the Metallica fans think the band are
On the Fade to Black solo, Kirk is actually improvising a lot more these days, it has been the case for a few tours now and he mentionned that in his recent interview with Rick Beato. Interesting song to check out live, post 89 I would say. Interesting 12 strings used in 93/94, James now using an electronic guitar with both 6 strings and 12 strings sound to play the acoustic part.
Creeping Death is actually about the seven plagues that Egypt went through in the Bible. Story goes that James and Cliff were watching the movie The Ten Commandments one time and basically went "Huh, that would make a cool idea for a song" and one of the classic metal songs of all time was born
Wow Patrick, take care of yourself man, sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with health. Never be ashamed to share. Also cool to know you’re a fellow AEW fan! Keep up the amazing content guys, love the genuine and honest reactions.
I have said for more than 3 decades that Escape is a massively underrated song. It has great riffs, a catchy chorus and is fun to play. It was one of the songs I wanted to cover the most and am glad I did.
cant wait!
The intro for Ride The Lightning was Lars' idea. He hummed it to Cliff, and then he created the harmony for it.
The "DIE DIE" part of creeping death live with Jason is such a blast !
I like to think the opening riff to ride is an attempt to mimic a lightning flash, on a guitar. That's why it sounds so "jagged" and "sharp". 🤟
I think part of why the FIRST instance of that riff is tough for people to listen to is because the tom hits happen on the back beat of the rhythm. If yer counting 1-2-3-4, the first hit happens on the "4" and leads into the start of the song repeating on the "2" and "4."
When the riff happens again at the end of the song, it comes in on the "1," which ends up feeling like a more natural transition in context.
Hey guys really glad you did this again! Big fan of you guys! (FYI fade to black is not on any s&m but there is a really awesome fan made one)When are you guys going to do hardwired?
Presideo is the name of studio they were in before James went to rehab then they went a different direction and built their own headquarters. From there they did st. Anger. All nightmare long came partially from the presideo recordings. It was called shadow of the cross on the presideo recordings.
It was called the presidio recordings at HQ right before James went into rehab 2001. 24:54
I just want to say, if there is any song where a fade out perfectly fits a song and its purpose it's fade to black
The song about suicide, fade out into nothing, much like life ending before it's time, the solo ends despite flowing with life and even getting second winds, either way, it still 'fades to black'
Edit: clearly I wrote this before the fade to black discussion, but for me this is an exception among fade outs that just fits for me
Just a quick thing about James' vocals.
He treats them like an instrument. He writes the vocal melody first, then writes the words that fit that melody. He some times adds another syllable to a word at the end, that creates that trademark Hetfield "AH" at the end of words.
His legendary solos of years past were actually written! Kirk's improvisation on the last few albums just hasn't turned out well. That is partly why I think his solo EP Portals is so good. He actually gave it thought and composed the tracks. I would say his EP would make for a good shorter reaction video, but it's Patrick's favorite, instrumentals! 😂
We obviously never have an issue with you talking, we love! It was just that it was destroying the music lol. We felt you missed so much because of the talking but I’m so glad you kept going after some of the backlash! Been loving the in-depth reviews about music production
To hear songs from the first four albums with more of a modern sound check out the Seattle 89 concert. James is at his best vocally live. It gives a newer twist on the first three albums. James vocals are outstanding.
A lot of people have suggested this! We have to check out some of it for sure!
@@PatrickMusilek it is one of the greatest live performances in history!!!!!! the energy is off the charts!!!!!
Lars actually did the scream for ride the lightning 1:00:03
Sorry baldy but call of ktulu is great.
Didn't know Chris was working on "Wizard With a Gun"! Cool project Chris. Also a Steam indie developer here (TFM), wishing you luck on the release.
I'm Brazilian and I love your videos, especially about Metallica (I'm going to look for other videos from other bands on the channel), I learned English playing video-games and nowadays I find it easy to understand english speech and especially texts, your diction It's spectacular and I can understand everything without even using subtitles (but I use them often so as not to miss something), I noticed that Metallica's videos are doing very well on the channel but you've already listened to almost all the albums, so I wish you luck in being able to reach others fanbases that can watch your videos (like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, etc. - if they haven't reached it yet) to be able to bring more videos - and even if they listen for the second time, it's really cool to listen with you, I love your reactions and you can tell details that in my head only I noticed haha
I worked at a recording studio in Omaha Nebraska for 7 years and one of the things we worked on the most was speech editing. That, combined with the fact that I have been editing Harry Potter podcasts for over 10 years means that I have a great appreciation for speech! It means a lot that you can understand us!
Thank you for giving the channel a try! We have a lot of fun things planned other than Metallica, so hopefully fans of other bands can join in on the fun as well!
🔔z has the Greatest intro of ALL-TIME❗️. Thank you, Cliff🎸🤘🤘 "YEAH❗️"
‘Twas I who referred Bear Ghost! So glad you liked it, bud. I think I already said this, but as much as I’d love to see a reaction to it, more than anything I’m just happy to help get their name out there.
Little trivia Lars is the one screaming in Ride the Lighting
About the 'what Metallica do and don't play live' part of the conversation.. I got into Metallica around 2007 when i was about twelve years old, and since then I have seen them live 4 times. Each time I saw them i felt they played really compelling setlists that shuffled things up quite well. I'll put the 4 unique sets I saw down below, i think it'll paint a pretty clear picture of what you can expect to see if you ever see them live.

Thanks and take care.
I confess this is my first video of yours i'm watching. However, if it's an in depth discussion on the sound production and compostion of this great album, im totally on board
If you guys want to hear Metallica riffs with good production, you should check out Trivium. They are incredible and have really awesome elements of Metallica spread throughout their music.
We have had so many people recommend Trivium's album Shogun, that we are doing that one 100%!
@@PatrickMusilek The Sin And The Sentence is the best
I would love a run through Trivium's Discography. The Crusade is my favourite of all the albums but I like all of them. The last 3 have been some of their best work honestly. Not to mention when they got Alex Bent everything went up 1000%.
Dude is a machine.
For whom the bell tolls, Fade to Black and Creeping Death are incredible live. Check out Seattle '89 live for these tracks in their prime!! 🤘😎🤘
Oh helll yessssss!!!
so stoked for wizard with a gun! I like devolver games and had no idea it was coming out or chris was working on it. definitely day one buy!
This is sad. This guy is so into engineering music that he has lost the ability to just listen, and feel the music. The emotions it creates, the soul of it all.
Every time I'm out on my mountain bike and 🔔z is playing, i sing along with Chairman Het 🔔🤘🤘
The end of fade to black live is so epic! You should do an entire video about a live from their black album tour. Mexico city From Live Sh*t binge and Purge for example
I like your videos, you just talk during the good parts 😅.... keep up the good work
The first time I heard of Carry on Wayward son was after my brother passed away; he had the song on his iPhone. He was a Huge Metalhead, especially the Big 4; Metallica being his favourite 🎸🤘🤘. Our sister got the chorus tattooed . It's a Great song🎸👍👍
Nice! Will we see a reaction to Garage Inc.? I re3member hearing you talking about it in one of the reaction videos saying you dont like to do reactions for covers... But this one album is so good its crazy. The songs all have their own sound while all sounding so good. And you hear a lot of the stuff you like. I think you would especially love James' voice and how heavy the guitars sound on most of these songs. Disc 2 is my personal fav.
We will do it, 100%
lets go!
you guys still gotta do garage inc., hardwired, and garage days rerevesited!!
The lead guitar sound that you love on Fade to Black is a wah pedal engaged but left in the “up” position so the highs are cut. It has a super warm sound and it’s perfect for the solo.
Also, I agree with your feelings on Call of Kthulu. I love the song, but agree that it feels like it drags on… listen to “Cliff the lightning” and it will change your mind. It is a fan-made remix on TH-cam that raises Cliff Burton’s bass in the levels and it adds SO much to the mix. It’s a much more interesting song with the bass levels raised.
Glad you re-did this reaction. Looking forward to when you do Garage Inc
Thrash Metal in the early 80s was a mix of Hardcore Punk (Misfits, Blitzkrieg (Motörhead)) and New Wave of British Heavymetal (such as Iron Maiden)
You mentioned in the first video for this album how FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLLS was used in WWE for The Undertaker . When it was first used though, it was actually used for Triple H's and the first part of his entrance at Wrestlemania 27 AGAINST The Undertaker ...
Then the next year at Wrestlemania 28, THE MEMORY REMAINS from Load was used in promotional work when Triple H and The Undertaker fought again.
NOW THAT WE'RE DEAD from Hardwired ... was used for 'taker in his Wrestlemania 36 match against AJ Styles ...
47:08 can't believe you got the real James Hetfield to feature in this video. Incredible work. (Also I definitely didn't forget about the premiere)
You should do a reaction to Metallica live show 1989 Seattle it's probably by far there Best live show they have ever done
I really enjoy Ride the Lightning's sound because it is so different from what we associate with metal today. Like a lot of early heavier music, it has this violence to it because it abuses a sound made for a different kind of rock. The music feels like it's doing something it shouldn't be doing, which is thrilling, and James' shouty vocals are a part of it.
Another famous band that pushed against the boundaries of what was common in production is Nine Inch Nails. A more recent example may be Low.
Mr Bungle's "Pink Cigarette" has a hilarious interpretation of dying.
2:17:00 You know, mad respect for really listening and trying to appreciate Call Ktulu ( and all of RTL for that matter). Not my favorite track but once again really sounds better with a heightened bass. The studio version is just like "uhhh... what's happening here?" Not bad imo but way better with bass.
The “presidio album” that’s available on TH-cam (never officially released) wasn’t even all from the presidio. At least one of the portions was from HQ. It’s just bits from jam sessions that’s interesting to hardcore Metallica fans.
They have played "Escape" live one time (Orion Music and More Festival 2012), when they played the whole "Ride the lightning" album. James said before the song: "the song we never wanted to play live ever, is now on the setlist" 😀 1:18:46 and Chris: "back to the front!" is from "Disposable heroes" 🙃
I insist, Metallica is a live band, some of their shows are iconic. Moscow 91, Mexico 93, Seattle 89, even Cunning stunts from 96. And tons of other shows. Most of their songs take an other dimension when they play them live. You should consider pick one of 2 shows and react to them. They are really impressive, especially the 88-93 era. James's voice at its best.
The vocals pushed back on fade to black give them distance. Applicable to the subject. So much art in their music.
They don't do Fade to black with the symphony, and I always wondered why. Another good question to ask them
My late brother told me i would like the beginning of 2009s Zombieland. I asked him why and he said "You'll have to wait and see"😏🎸
Troy and Abed in the mooooorning!
Back to the front line is in Disposable Heroes
2:15:00 if you listen very closely you can hear hetfield go "waaaaahhhhhhh " to mimick the guitar.
"There's no chorus, there's just a refrain" - my biggest gripe about 72 Seasons. Didn't know how to describe it until now! Thanks, ha ha.
Two thoughts spring to mind with the discussion you guys had at the end of Fade to Black, both about the artistic merit of fading out the solo and another example of a song stopping instantly as a representation of death.
I've always seen this song as being less about suicide itself and more the emotional and mental health descent that precedes it. The fading to black isn't consciousness fading away, but the sense of self, the sense of connection, the sense of purpose. He's giving up on life. So, when the solo kicks in and brings so much energy & passion, only to fade out, it's like Kirk is channeling all the family & friends of the protagonist who are trying to reach him, to bring him out of this funk. He is trying so desperately to get through and bring this episode to a happy ending, but it's all for not. Maybe the mind and body are still working, but this PERSON is gone. He, and the music, have faded to black.
Now for something even more sad. Yay! In an example of an album ending with a heart-wrenching representation of a real-life tragedy, Blind Melon released an outtakes compilation album called Nico in 1996, a year after the death of lead singer Shannon Hoon from a cocaine overdose. The final track on the album is a song called "Letters from a Porcupine" and is an answering machine recording from Hoon to a band member playing acoustic guitar and singing a new song idea. Just shy of 2 minutes, in the heart of the action, everything stops dead and all we're left with is the beep at the end of the answering machine message. It's such a gut punch to experience as a perfect representation of a life ending so suddenly, right in the middle of his creative endeavours. I've never heard a posthumous album end on such a haunting note, and frankly, I'd be happy if I never experience anything quite that poignent again.
I'm one of the long-time Metallica fans who discovered this channel through this series, and I'm glad you returned to Ride the Lightning. It's cool seeing how the perspectives have changed, both in liking more things now with practiced ears, and in having more context and nuance in describing the things you don't like. Great reviews hit the positives and the negatives, and this one did that in spades. Cheers!
Wow that Blind Melon album sounds devastating!
A fantastic comment!
"Escape" was a last-minute composition that the band had to throw together for Ride the Lightning because the label wanted there to be one more song on it. Thus, the only time they ever played the song was during their 2012 Orion festival, when they played Ride the Lightning in its entirety.
IMO the song is not only the weakest on the album, it very much doesnt fit in with the rest of the album...
Patrick, The Call of Ktulu is an epic piece of music, have some sophistication my friend lol
I'm very curious about why Chris nose is always red, does anyone know why?
I'm gonna miss this because tommorow night I'll be seeing Metallica and TOOL 🤟🤟
Id love to see you guys react to fan remasters of Metallica songs. Alot of the fan-made remasters are actually better than the official ones. 🤣
Hopefully you'll be jumping onto the first S&M, soon.
Metallica Seattle '89 live should be your first live reaction. This will show you what Metallica is all about! 🤘😎🤘
Hey Patrick, been loving your reactions binge watching them all and hopefully people don’t hate on ya for this one I see a lot of people still getting mad over you talking over stuff but who cares it’s a reaction!
Just some random facts/tidbits/answers as I listen to this:
•The entire album is in standard guitar tuning, but it's actually slightly higher pitched than that. The two theories I've always heard were that they did it to make it sound tighter, or that they had to do it to match the anvil hammer pitch (the "bell") in For Whom the Bell Tolls. The tuning is actually really annoying because if your guitar is correctly tuned to standard E tuning, it will sound ever so slightly off because you're slightly out-of-tune lol
•The middle fast riff (before/after the solo) in Ride the Lightning was written by Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, as well as the intro for Call of Ktulu. If you ever do Megadeth reactions and hear Hangar 18, its intro has the same exact notes. (Actually, he also wrote the original Four Horsemen riff too, so both bands have a version of that exact song)
•The distorted intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls is Cliff's bass. The horror-y squeals at the end are guitar, and they usually end the live version with Kirk going heavy on the wah/squealing guitar solo while everyone else holds on a final note in the background before
•On the topic of For Whom The Bell Tolls being based on a novel, One is based on Johnny Got His Gun. Metallica also purchased rights to the movie for them use in their music video for On, which was the first music video they ever made
•By 2010, Kirk started improvising the middle of the Fade to Black guitar solo at every show and has been very open about it. The beginning and ending are played the same, but the middle is a bit different each time
•One cool thing about Metallica that I don't see too often is that they change up portions of their setlist every show. Yeah, they'd still hit their Sandman, One, Master of Puppets every show, but they'd change the thrash song(s), the opener, the cover song, the deep cut, the instrumental if they're doing one, etc. at every show. Their current tour has them playing two entirely different setlists every weekend with zero repeats from night to night
•They won a Grammy for their Call of Ktulu performance with the symphony, and I think you'll love the extra dynamics when you get there. Same for The Outlaw torn since it adds so much more depth and feeling to the song. I just wish the bass was even more pronounced on the Ktulu remaster (and symphony version) because the constant similar-but-unique bass fills in every verse and the evil-sounding distorted wah is what defines the song's Lovecraftian horror theme
Late edit: For Chris' definition of a perfect album, Justice is my personal candidate. That said, a lot of metalheads would credibly argue Master is a masterpiece album. Hell, I only follow a couple of reaction creators, and I've repeatedly heard them suggest that you could take any song off of Master and put it on a non-Metallica-tier metal band's album, and it would immediately be the best song on the album, if not their best song overall. Even if I prefer Justice, I can see exactly where they're coming from
Thanks! Fun facts. You can add my trapped under ice fact as well 😊
At 57:00 ish where you mention about the guitar sound on Master of puppets and there is a frequency you wish you could take out. On Master of puppets the guitars were tuned at 435hz instead of the standard 440hz. This is why when most people play along it always sound 'slightly' out of tune or just not quite right.
They also did a lot of recording parts slow and speeding back up on KEA and RTL which may be what your ears are picking up. Great show by the way have been listening along to all of your Metallica episodes 🤘
I don't get you guys' aversion to fade outs. They might think it leaves a better impression (the final riff) rather than some contrived way of stopping it, like how they finish a lot of songs live - a big samey, symbol-heavy, crashy 'crescendo'-type finish, you know?.
Regarding the Fade To Black solo, when when it fades, I just thought of it as repeated doodling really, for the fade out..
James is the one who really hates Escape the most. Lars and Kirk like to jam on it occasionally at shows to mess with James
Patrick, what Headphones are you wearing in all the videos and is there a reason you choose these specifically to listen to music/the songs?
I just got to the part about your health: I feel really sorry for you. I wish you all the best and hope you will get better soon!
Patrick you look like you’ve been working out or something. Genuinely 🤘🤘
James also writes songs about growing up and parents, or the struggle of growing up.
Regarding playing just the hits versus deeper cuts, Iron Maiden have a novel approach. For the past 20 years they've tended to alternate tours between classics and new stuff. They'll do a tour focused on their new album and then follow it with a tour focused on 80s stuff. They played their 2006 album A Matter of Life and Death in full on its tour; it ruffled some feathers.
Hi guys love your work, but why do another video of ride the lightning when you haven’t react to hardwired to self destruct?
thanks
We had Covid at my house and we couldn't have Present Chris come over (especially with a little baby at home) so Remote Chris and I decided to relisten to Ride as an inbetween video! Remote Chris wasn't there when we recorded the first so it was really fun!
So what you're saying is you're just stalling and milking metallica?!?!
(jk, obviously)
As much as I love Creeping Death on this record, this might be their most iconic live track, at least when Jason was in the band. I will listen to any live version of this song from 89-00 over the original any day. His backing vocals and lead vox for the last verse make this his song, truly. Nowadays the backing vox are still okay with Rob, but James ALWAYS lets the crowd sing the whole last verse. I love to imagine it's a tribute to their greatest member, imo. Check out Creeping Death live! It's incredible
For me, the best live version of Fade to Black is on the Live Shit Mexico City 1993 concert. I think you’ll be satisfied to hear how they resolve the song instead of fading out the solo! Also, Fade to Black is not featured on either of the symphony albums.
Hey Patrick, what headphones do you use?
Ktulu live from 2017 will make much more sense to you since you can see and hear what the song is all about and is bass lines that are emulating Cthulhu's awakening and/or calling
Unfortunately Patrick, they didn't do Fade to Black in S&M 😢
You guys should do live reactions of Metallica!
I think when you watch the Live Sh*t Videos instead of listening to the live album (btw the CD has for some reason the better sound quality but there a videos with "Live Sh*t audio" in the title wich are awsome) you understand Metallica a lot more because you see who makes which sound and how all instruments and band members compliment each other
Patrick lost a good oportinity to fade out this video...
It would be cool if you reacted to the penultimate album "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct"
The intro riff you guys don’t like on the title track is one of the riffs mustaine wrote fyi
Very interesting!
It aint, Lars wrote the intro to RTL. It's the only guitar piece he's credited with
It was Lars
Trapped Under Ice is actually supposed to have a sci-fi slant to it... the idea is that a guy in cryosleep (maybe during long distance space travel) suddenly realizes he is conscious and cannot move his body and is trapped bodily.... "trapped under ice." It apparently is a fear of James's or something because he revisits this idea again in One of being trapped in your own body and unable to communicate or cry out.
Epic is correct🔔🤘🤘 "YEAH❗️"
Cool video. I don’t get the instrumental slander, but otherwise, good video. ;)
lets do all official live dvd/blu ray
