A lot of fast food restaurants can end up giving you some stuff for free, especially near closing hours. They do this because the food’s going to end up being thrown out anyway.

That is true, one time I was the last order in a Burger King and they gave me for free some fries with cheddar cheese, let’s just say they made my day
i went to dunkin donuts they gave me 6 dozsen donuts for some blankets
we gave them
I've worked in a hamburger place and few times when we tough this is going to be our last costumer, we told them after the payment if they wanted some extra cheese or tomato for example bc then we have less cleaning and storaging. But we did this only to nice costumers. And big fries every time, no matter what.

Definitely show up either 20 or 30 minutes before closing.
Best option is to choose slow day and show up 30mins earlier so employees can be 90% sure that you are the last. Also agree, don't ask. We give you free stuff if you are nice to us.

Ex subway employee here, they don't throw cookie leftovers away at closing, they're usually just taken to the back and sold for the next day or two. And they're super stingy on giving free food or even extra veggies. I even got in trouble for giving a guy who didn't order a salad a fork.
Same a kid got extra meat on his food and he was about 50 cents short and my boss unwrapped his sandwich and took it of, but my co-worker put it back on when she went into the back and i payed for the sandwich because the kid was like eight or nine
Dang! As a customer I got to know the employees (including the manager) at my regular subway and they always treat me right because I am polite and funny. I've found that at most restaurants if you show up regularly with a good attitude they will usually return the favor with some perks.

Regulars are a different story to all the other customers. On multiple occasions my manager stopped some other task to serve a regular customer and took like 10 min from the amount of conversation

Ive had a man bang at the drive through because we were closed but still inside cleaning to close and he figured if we were in there why werent we selling food still. Craziest things happen at close easily.
It depends, I surely wouldn't give food to someone who clearly looks like a Karen; but if a student or someone enters asking for free food, I'm gonna assume they need it, and I'd rather give it to them instead of throwing it out. While some places "recycle" the food, some just throw it out, and you don't know how badly the employees hate it.

@altereddemon4569 If that happened at your subway, that's great, but not all of them do this, so you can not say that it is false when you have only experienced this at one subway and not all of them.
If I'm being honest, as a Subway employee, most of our cookies (at least for my location anyways) are usually sold out by mid-shift, it's very rare that we have any cookies to throw away at the end of the night because they're usually gone just a few hours after baking them.
I used to work in place like this, near closing time I used to give as much free goodies as I can per customer. It HURTS to throw away perfectly eatable foods. If I still had left over, I used to pack it and give it to homeless around or police officer doing graveyard shifts.

I have a couple friends that work in subways. Most of the time employees are the one bringing them home. If you ask for cookies you will pay for them even if it’s closing time. The only way you might get some for free is if you didn’t ask for any and the employees offers you some

Dude we once had a group of 4, two couples, come in 5 minutes before closing and the one guy thought he was THE shit. Kept making horrible and rude jokes and then was all like "yeah dont worry we'll leave you alone now" 10 minutes after we were supposed to close. Safe to say we all got home 20 minutes later

As a previous subway employee, my location did not throw out cookies at the end of the day. They usually sat there overnight until sold usually the next day

That's really true because once, me and my mom walked to a nearby bagel shop when it was near closing and when we got there the owner was all ready to go but my mom ordered like a huge bag of bagels (it was for a party) and he gave us the things she asked for and he gave them to us, my mom was ready to give him the money but he said it was free and he said he was just happy that he had no work tomorrow(the place was closed on the weekends) but now I'm pretty sure the place is closed now and they really had the best bagels and I will always remember that great moment

I was the last customer at a Cici's Pizza on Christmas Eve years ago. They were closing early for the company Christmas party. They gave us the pizzas that were left, so we had free pizza for days.
I worked at a bakery for 4 years and occasionally people would come right before close and expect free cookies saying “aren’t you just going to throw them out anyways?” lol and no we would keep some for the morning and put the rest in discounted boxes.
Chicken places are the best. You get a entire 10 piece instead of a three piece at closing. Thank you Popeyes

The food won't be fresh
As someone who worked at subway for 3 years... we do not do this. The cookies are good and stay relatively fresh for up to 3 days and are always sold long before that because we always make slightly too little cookies so we sell them all looooong before 3 days mark. After the three days mark (if they ever get there) we either push selling them or the manager get them for free/gives them to the customers we enjoy serving. We don't give them to late comers ever, in fact if you come in 10 mins to close at random were more likely to charge you for water (we're supposed to charge you for it but most of us give it away for free unless you piss us off).

You know what’s actually really funny, I work at subway, we’ve never given out free cookies before close, normally there either still recently baked enough to sell or we wait till after close to eat the stale ones ourselves

Just know that while this is true for most places it’s also really annoying for the staff because we want to just close up and go home. Having to serve customers till the minute we close gets kinda smoothing because we know it’s just gonna be extra time for us to have to finish cleaning up before we can leave

I feel like these types of workers are are genuinely bad people, really you'd prefer to throw food in the bin rather than give it to someone in need of even just someone who will eat itrather than it getting thrown out, even typing this I can't believe there are such greedy people in this world would rather throw something out than give a cookie away
@Daylan Dude its not about being fucking greedy. It depends on what type of person your boss is, but mine isnt nice. She has fired people for giving out free food and she will have our heads for doing that.
Also, in germany thats just a plain unusual thing to happen. You cant beg for free food here, you can get fined for it

I work as a supervisor for my one shop, coming in late don’t get you free stuff lol but that’s just us, don’t expect every shop to do it cause no one wants to be making your stuff after closing.

I mean to be fair this is dependent on the staff and store. I worked at subway and what ever cookies were left we didn't give them to the customers they were saved for the next (FIFO 3 day max) day or we were allowed to take some since we baked them.

I used to close all the time at my subway, and let me tell you when we run out of cookies and there are only a couple hours left, especially when online orders can’t be taken anymore, we don’t make anymore, there are usually not any cookies left to throw away where I worked, and when there was, we were instructed to put them on a pan with a sandwich wrap and throw them in with the bread. Like our bread, it gets used up the next day, and we make new ones, but if you ever go to a subway in the morning, you’re probably getting day old bread, same with the cookies.

This is truth. When i delivered pizzas they let me take home boxes of food that was gonna get thrown out. We gave it out to any customers that asked but they rarely did
Little tip the more orders they take more money goes into their paycheck so if I do come in before closing and buy some food that’s gonna be a little extra money on their paycheck so really both the employees and the customers should be happy Especially the tips
As someone who has worked in the service industry for over ten years I can say this is something very situational. More likely than not the service workers are NOT going to give away free food to you. More likely than not the service worker is going to be annoyed you showed up right at closing, and give you nothing more than what you ordered and payed for.
I have a secret for bank Customer support. If you get charged for something like account maintenace or something that you forgot you had. Just call and say that you dont agree with it and you want to file a complain. Most of the time we will just charge you back. Its cheaper to vharge 10$ back than make whole complain procedure going. Its depends on your client value tho. For my bank a gold tier client could be charged back at max 20$ a year. We also use it as barggaging technique if sameone wants more than we have limit to we basicaly say " how about i give you 20$ bucks now so you fuck off?"
