Our '68 Early 4020 is a gasoline engine type with the cab.
When changing from the old generator charging system to an alternator , both 12 volt , you NEED to change it to a NEGATIVE GROUND and swap the wires around on the ignition coil.
What size of alternator did you get?
Ours has lots of extra lighting on it for working at night. We went with a 100 amp 3 wire Delco 27SI alternator .
This allowed me to use the old dash generator light to trigger it.
I did have to run a new #4 gauge cable from the + alternator battery terminal over to the starter solenoid.
The original harness cannot handle the load.
I used 30 amp accessory relay wired to the battery on starter for all the extra rear flood/work lights and
triggered the relay off the other factory light circuit.
We use a single 31 series battery to crank it up.

Abilene machine now has a planetary gear reduction starter for low manifold tractors

Ok, so I just ordered the conversion kit from Abilene Machine and I have a 1963 4010, are you saying that I might not be able to fit the starter in due to the intake manifold ? The web site nor did they mention anything about year of tractor or exhaust manifold type .

I was working on a 3020 John Deere tractor today putting batteries in it and I noticed the right battery is positive ground on the left battery is negative gound what's that all about.

that's how they obtain 24v. it's essentially wiring the batteries in series.. which doubles the voltage seen at the starter. That's why you see the battery cables going to 2 different spots on the starter- one to the solenoid, the other to the field.
when converting over to 12v, both batteries will now be wired in parallel... and 12v- negative ground is what the whole tractor sees.
That's why when doing the conversion, the fuel gauge needs to be changed; the original one is a positive ground, and won't work with negative ground. It's not 24v's like the video says, it's strictly a polarity issue the 24v system john deere used.
The oil pressure lamp is already wired for negative ground... so that part is ok.
Only the generator, starter are 24v's.

How much hard to cold start once you convert to 12v? I have 2 4020's , 12v and 24v, the 24v will start cold at 10 degrees without plugging in the block heater. My 12v has to be plugged in at abouts 25 degrees, the advantage to the 12v is you can crank the starter for a long time and it won't burn up, the 24v will burn up if you hang on the starter. I don't use starting fluid either

Cranking speed ,cranking speed That’s what it takes. I’ve had rally good luck with these but all depends on what kind of shape the engine is in. Thanks

Do you have a 6 volt to 12 volt conversion? my john deere 3020 is two 6 volt batteries

I’m confused. That was not clear how to hook up the starter or starter relay?

@@AftermarketTractorPartscom What is th key switch providing to the starter relay, from the drawing it likes like a ground enable (I assume there are other pines on the starter switch that are not shown)?
