I've cried when they called Mr. George... So beautiful to see Your Majesty recognizing just a simple man... Congratulations, Sir George!

I was just talking to my wife about the benefits of a Monarchy. As Americans I wish we had a connection to our old monarchies. The void left by its absence has caused Americans to venerate celebrities who have nothing going for them, except the privilege of being on television which makes their personal lives and appearances the fascination for millions. I'd rather have the class of a monarchy than the crass of the Kardashians and their ilk.

Jason Great comment. It's pointless to honour people just for being famous. Governments nominate most of the recipients, and I suspect they choose people that the fickle public likes, to try getting their favour.

Even as an american, it's really nice to see a woman who, even though she lacks any governing power, symbolizes thousands of years of british history and actively works as a philanthropist to make people's lives better. God save the queen indeed.

@ImaginedWriter Are you joking you came in like it was a damn film! We fought for 5 and a half years, you lot barely did 2! And also the American's did not help us as much as the Russian's who were so massive Germany hadn't a hope of holding them back. Plus America, for once in it's cushy life should try fighting a war were it's own homelands industrial centers are destroyed. Our's were yet we still lasted for 5+ year. Besides this is all hypothetical. Just don't forget other nations sacrifices.

Don't attack Britain from one bad apple, and do not go down to his level, i think a lot of Britain's people praise America for its involvement and help, so don't go off like that.

@Pawnbroker00 Well, polls have shown that most of her subjects are in support of keeping the monarchy going, and she's a strong international figure promoting the UK, as well as being the patron of over 600 charities. So I'd say that if she's pigging the government's money, a lot of it is going back to charity, and the brits are okay with it.

@Pawnbroker00 Yes, but does the monarchy bring in more money than it receives? How much of the Queen's personal income comes from the government? Besides, if you get rid of the monarchy, what problems will that solve? No more unemployment? poverty? inequality? And has she specifically made your life worse?

So to answer your question, annual tourism brings in:
      £1.8BN
They bring in 400 million a year in private revenue that under the “sovereign act 2011” the government keeps £360 million of.” So yea they bring in more than they cost to keep that’s always been the case it’s also always been said they’re good value for money that’s pretty much evident and indisputable otherwise they’d be gone and we’d see a republic for our first time.
Parliament supports the monarch by means of the Sovereign Grant, a percentage of the annual profits of the Crown Estate which is intended to meet the costs of the sovereign's official expenditures. This includes the costs of the upkeep of the various royal residences, staffing, travel and state visits, public engagements, and official entertainment.Other sources of income include revenues from the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, a parliamentary annuity, and income from private investments. The Duchy of Lancaster is a portfolio of land, property and financial investments that form part of the Queen's private income. It is run on behalf of the monarch by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Clerk of the Council and is self-financing, meaning it does not run using taxpayers' money. It is used to pay for royal expenses that are not funded by the Sovereign Grant and the accounts of the Duchy are submitted to Parliament annually. The Queen also voluntarily pays tax which she has since 1992 and no monarch prior has done so because the Sovereign is exempt from tax generally speaking and it was a good gesture on her part.

The British society today gives away honours such as Knighthoods, MBE's etc to people like pop stars and other meaningless transitory so-called celebrities. In the modern world, this is the UK's equivalent of the American Oscar's, and celebrates mediocrity with unbelievable pomp. Why not Knight the Corgi's too?

    • @30secondstomarsMBH

Wilhelm Tauber Because the government nominates most of them, and puts up these so called celebrities to try to get favour for themselves. The Queen's own list is usually for people no one ever hears of because they are just devoted to doing their job, not being seen on television.

Recipients of the Orders except the very top ones (Garter and Thistle) and the Royal Victorian Order (for members of the Royal Household and others personally rendering services to the Royal Family) are all appointed on the advice of the Government.
If you want better honours , get better politicians.

Honourable ceremony. At the top of the list of Knighthoods in alphabetical order is Sir Abdul-Baha Abbas of the Baha'i Faith. During World War I when a blockade threatened the lives of civilians in Haifa, He saved them from starvation. He organized extensive agricultural operations near Tiberias, securing a great supply of wheat. Food was stored in underground pits and later systematically distributed to inhabitants. Starting as early as 1912, He averted tragedy in the dark days of 1917 & 1918. He was made Sir ‘Abdu’l-Bahá ‘Abbás, K.B.E.

There is a wonderful sense of history in Britain, and as an American of British descent (rarer than you'd think in the US) I cherish the cultural heritage of what I consider the mother country.
But to say that the US has no history is absurd. Pope John II mentioned the "modern epic that is American history," a recognition that though America is young, its history has been incredibly dynamic--and, unlike Britain, there is a sense that history is still being made in the US.

I'm usually the 1st to defend the US, but lately I've been noticing a lot of Americans starting pointless, unprovoked arguments in the comments of any video even remotely related to the UK.
I don't even understand it. Our nations haven't been at war with each other in almost 200 years, & have stood side by side through several global conflicts. I'm proud of my heritage as a British American, and wish they'd lay off you guys.
