another awesome vid!!! what helped me was makeing grip tape ALOT bigger, so your hand relax more, and alot of newer tattooist use to mutch power in their fingers around the grip so they shake and dont relax
Smaller grouping lines are def achievable with a rotary.. but they do often struggle with bigger groupings.. irrelevant of what the (often paid) review podcasts tell you.. and def spending more doesnt help. Understanding how a rotary works, rotation and time spent in the skin, will make a difference.. you dont wanna be over working a line and scaring or blow outs look shit 😬 For a solid crisp line you just ain't Gonna beat a coil machine that's tuned right for the job in hand. I absolutely love rotaries, have various from a 2.8 stroke to a 4 2.. been using a Cheyenne unlimited 3.5 stroke for about a year now.. before that various Cheyenne/Spektra FK machines, I work mainly realism/portrait.. the more I use the Cheyenne unlimited, the more i like it and realise it's a FANTASTIC daily work horse for my style of tattooing.. but.. like all rotaries, it struggles more with bigger groupings.. they are achievable.. but just not as crisp as a coil on same grouping. Round shades are great for some types of bold lines.. i like em for mandala etc as the line width remains s the same 😊 Just my experience, others may feel otherwise 🤷♂️😊

@@clockworktattooshop if I film while I’m tattooing then it’s set on tripod, nothing expensive, just a cheap one from Amazon. Any other filming is done before the tattoo. I use DSLR and microphone because the quality is better. You could use iPhone but DSLR offers so much more plus high frame shooting
Hey Chris, one problem I'm running into with line work is because of hand stencil making. On the carbon spirit paper it feels bumpy when tracing a line, so sometimes it comes out inaccurate when tracing a line..is it better to use thermal paper or a different brand? Or is there a certain technique to getting a smooth hand stencil...I thought spirit paper was supposed to be the best! Great content man.
I used Hand Stencils all the way through my career up until a few month ago and moved to iPad and thermal. I can’t say I ever ran into that issue, but the only thing I could think off is the surface you are working on when tracing maybe? I’m not sure buddy. When I used to hand stencil I used a higher GSM (not too high tho, otherwise it won’t bend round the skin) paper and a 4h pencil to keep the point longer for more consistency

Lol this is a huge problem for me as well, I honestly have just been turning my hand and body position to make the horizontal line more of a diagonal or vertical line if that makes sense.
Hi, I have Cheyenne sol nova unlimited 3.5 and I use mostly 5 or 7 liners for my linework, I run it around 9 V, but I find myself going over the same lines several times so it looks sharp and really black, what could be the problem? In the end the tattoo looks great and heals well but it takes me so long and sometimes the line isn't as sharp as I want it.
@@ChrisRavage I'm using Eternal ink - lining black (I used Panthera liner ink before and had the same issue). Maybe I don't strech enough. Thank you for response! (and sorry fot my English I'm from Prague).
@@chnadija I would say it’s probably because of the stretch if you have tried two different inks. If not, try upping your Vs to around 10. Just keep making little tweaks and you will get there.

Hello, I am practicing on fake synthetic skin at 8.5V. I have trouble with the hand speed, it seems if I don't go really slow the line is not really black?. From your experience, does real skin packs colour faster than 3mm thick fake skin?
@@paulwhitman8955 I’m not familiar with that machine but as a general rule you have to line slower with a rotary machine. Its nothing to do with the fake skin. Fake skin is never going to be the same but it’s probably not the issue.
I own a Cheyenne Hawk Pen and I'm not happy with my lines. The machine runs at 3.5 stroke and I think about getting a 4.0 Stroke machine. Maybe something like the Stigma Spear, you think this is a good choice? Hope you can help!
I personally found that the Cheyenne Thunder is the better liner with Cheyenne Machines and that does have a 4.0 stroke. The Bishop Wand liner has a 5.0 which is also good. I’ve not used the Stigma but generally any 4.0 will be good.

As a new tattoo apprentice, I was fortunately able to get used to floating the needle while using a 3RL.

I’m using a Canon DSLR for video, nothing special on lights, just a few lights diffused and I use Premier Pro to edit.

If you are comfortable with a 3rl then use it, go up if your lines are shaky or you keep blowing out tho

It’s such a cop out answer but just practice. Smaller horizontal lines to start until it feels more comfortable and build up from there

What black are you using? Are you stretching the skin enough

Could you be specific my man. What machine are you using? What needle? Brand...coils work different to rotary so it could be a number of things.

Try the neuma 4 from carson hill...by far the best rotary linear on the market
