At 6 months my pain started to dissipate...At 8 months my pain was completely gone...I am currently at 11 months and I think about my knee replacement less than 5% of the time.

Thanks Doctor Samantha, l am 5 months post right knee replacement, doing really well no pain whatsoever, walking, swimming and exercising everyday. This week l had my first 7 hour sleep without awakening in the night, l feel great with the new knee and so glad that l had the operation. Best recommendation l could give is to get onto an Exercycle as soon as and work on that range of motion for the knee, it may hurt at first however you will see massive improvement in your ROM as the weeks go by, swimming is great for your recovery also. Male age 76.

How common is it to still feel the following: tired enough to need an afternoon nap 7 months post knee replacement? Walking up and down stairs, inclines, and declines is still so tricky and, sometimes, difficult? Is this normal? I used to be able to walk 15000-20,000 steps per day.. even with my old, wrecked knee. Now, at 7 months, I struggle to walk 6,000 steps/day. And walking hurts my back. I've never had back pain before. I was in PT for 4 months, post-op. Had one MUA. Still find getting out of a low chair near to impossible. I'm 56 and...prior to surgery...was relatively fit. I was hiking in the wilderness with no problem. Now...unable to do any sort of quick turns, sudden stops, or direction changes without coming to a full stop, first, assessing a situation to maintain balance and then continuing on.
I feel like I am 90 years old. I feel worse, now (mobility-wise), than I did prior to having the surgery.

The video I needed to hear. I’m just over 3 months and I attended a big boat show for work. Probably walked a mile and was standing up for 2-3 hours and now my knee has been sore and stiff ever since. I’m fighting my way through it and even rode my exercise bike hard for 15 minutes this evening. I keep thinking something is wrong but realize it’s going to take time. Thanks!

I needed to hear this video as well. I'm almost at my 6th month of TKR. The last few weeks i notice my knee feeling really stiff and "heavy" and aching. Always been a avid walker. Had 3 meniscal tear surgeries(same knee) years ago. I was "glad" to hear her say it's all normal and still healing. Maybe i overdid it too. Thank you!!!!!! 🙂

Dr. Smith, I love your channel and appreciate you sharing your insights. I am at 7 weeks and flexion is at 115 degrees. I have struggled with stiffness my entire journey thus far. I found your explanation about your body adjusting to a prosthetic device and not being so hung up on the flexion number helpful. When you focus on your knee all day you can get a little weird. Thanks

Wow, Im very sorry that you snd others have had this painful experience eith your surgeries.
I had a very different experience.
Its now 13 weeks since I had Total Knee Replacement surgery. I have had No pain at anytime. Yes, a slight discomfort at times.. I expected pain you know the story... Whats your pain level on a scale 0-10 if 10 is the worst and 0 is none? My discomfort level was 1-2.
I followed the instructions for pain management implicitly once I got home so I assumed that was why I had no pain. I gave a vwry low pain threshold so I was amazed that after 3weeks I was off all pain meds except for 1 celecoxib prior to exercise. At 4weeks I didnt even take that.
Im now walking 5-7kilometres once or twice a week, spending up ro 2hours doing exercises in the local pool and have just started today, going to the gym.
I still do all the exercises I was given by the physio at 6weeks.
Why have I added this comment...well its because the above experiences are pretty awful and someone seeing this video might say to themselves...Im not having the surgery its going to be awful.
    I want to say ....
Obviously for some people the experience is not good. But its the same with everything. Some people do well, some people do not.
    Don't make your decision based on fear........ F=false, E=evidence, A=appearing, R=real.
Yes, some people do have a tough time and when you get many of those comments in a row it seems like a lot, But, there is another side to the story.
Many people also have few if any problems.
Find out the FACTS. Knee surgery is pretty common, its one of the most performed surgeries all over the world. Not everyone hides their scars. Look for peope who have them, go over and say something like, Hi, excuse me, I notice you have a surgery scar on your knee. Im considering having a knee replacement but Im a hit worried about it, would you please tell me of your experience if you had it done? Most people like to talk about themselves so its quite likely most people you would ask would be happy to tell you, but there are always the exceptions.
The decision to do it or not to do it is still ultimately yours.
Best wishes for your future informed choices.
For those who have had it rough, I'm sorry I cannot offer any help, advice or comfort except to say as an old lady once said to me ....( And at the time it didnt help me because I didnt understand how it could help.. that came with a change of understanding and perception) she said, and I quote,
    Pray about it Dear.
❤ And I shall pray for you too. ❤
    In my experience
Prayer does help if you are sincere even when you pray in anger.🫢😯
    True, God is amazing!

Thanks for the information! I'm only two weeks post TKR and doing pretty well according to my PT! The one problem I'm currently having though is they found I have a "Baker's cyst" under my surgical knee causing extra swelling and discomfort making PT much harder and painful to do. Plus, it really distrupts sleeping. I'm going for a follow-up for it in two days.

A bump on the back of the knee typically occurs after knee surgery, so it's not there beforehand. If you have a bump, please get it checked out asap. It could be minimal like a Baker's cyst. Or, it could be rather serious like a blood clot, which is extremely bad.

I’m six months post-surgery and cut back on some of my knee exercises where I’m doing about 15-20 minutes a day and my knee isn’t as stiff. I also ice afterwards. My knee isn’t as stiff and swollen. I have had second total knee replacement in the same knee as I had it done for 15 months and it kept making me fall over and I broke my neck multiple ribs and had multiple concussions so my surgeon decided to take the prosthetic out and put a new one in. I’m over 2 1/2 months in and the pain is excruciating after a full dayof activity and I fear that it’s just as bad as it was previously before he put the new one in. If you can offer any help or any particular exercises I would be grateful. I was very active before this and not nearly as much pain as I am now, thank you.

I am now 6 months total right knee replacement, l feel that l am close to 100% right, l have started to jog a few yards here and there just a little bit tight at the back of the knee, other small issue is that l do patrols in a car and after 4 hours driving there is a little bit of stiffness in the muscles however it soon clears after l have walked a few yards or so. My best advice to anyone who has a TKR is to really work hard on your Range of Motion on your knee, l was off walking aid after the first week, on an Exercycle everyday and swimming 3 times a week, l had a plastic A4 paper holder which l placed and the carpet, when sat on a chair l would put my foot on the plastic folder and slide it back and forth, this was a great and cheap way to improve your ROM and it works really well.

      @TerrieKohout 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

It might be best to stop reading comments like these. I have had both knees, total replacement. The pain is very manageable with the drugs they will send you home with. I started substituting maximum does of Tylenol the second week instead of a dosage of pain killers. By the end of the third week, I was taking Tylenol for three doses and a dose of pain killer in the morning. Was off all pain killers and using just Tylenol by the end of the fourth week. Your knee will be stiff for several weeks, but I found walking a few steps would loosen the knee. Good Luck with your surgery, it will go well! Just keep doing those PT exercises!

i’m actually having more pain than I had in the beginning but then again in the beginning I was always medicated. I realize that in the past month of when I month or so when I went back to work, I was not stretching as much or exercising as much but I notice at the end of the day I have ankle pain pain in the lower portion of my leg. That’s debilitating sometimes hurts when I walk so maybe I should just start picking up on the exercises again. I didn’t feel pain in the beginning just feeling of cement in my knee heaviness to my knee and the numbness and awkwardness and then being feeling scared about bending it so the bending part is getting better and the numbness is getting less but now I’m having problems with and I noticed it’s a Timothy iurse if I put like a wrap around my ankle after I take the wrapping off, I could see that there’s edema

I am at 8 months after knee replacement. I continue to feel tightness and stiffness. It sometimes also feels heavy. My doctor had me go to additional physical therapy. I did the extra therapy to help my range of motion. My range of motion improved. My extension is good, but I was only able to reach 107 degrees in my bend. The physical therapist told me that there was no more he could do for me.
I feel pain sometimes, but it’s mostly the stiffness and tightness that is hard to live with. I had my other knee done two years ago and that one healed without any issue. I wonder if I will ever stop suffering from this knee.😢

It's hard to bend the knee and bring my leg up, especially lying down because I feel thee is something blocking it from pulling the leg up. The pain is much less, but it's sometimes a dull pain if I stand for long periods. So I am feeling like you. What worries me, is that lying down or sitting, my leg is not totally straight when I bring it straight out, I can straighten it almost the same as the non surgical leg, but not quite. I wonder if this will improve with exercisesI do while sitting and bringing the leg up.

My RTKR was 7/28/24. Got off to less than desirable start when home PT didn’t show up for 7 days ( Dr livid) and ice maker in fridge died ( we bought ice). Had hard time being motivated due to pain, depression. Went to all outpatient PT sessions but not always enthusiastically although therapists were so wonderful at encouraging me and continuing to progress me. Discharged from OP PT 12/1/24. Around mid December left foot posterior tibialis syndrome stage 4 flared up and I’ve had days nearly every other week since then where I can’t walk. As a result surgical knee not getting the exercise it needs. I walk when I can, heel slides and mini skateboard slides, mini seated bike but still a lot of stiffness. Odd this is I have always been more stiff after exercise. If this a problem? Seeing ortho for 6 month check in a few days and afraid he’ll be upset with me.

I am 7 months out and my pain and mobility are way worse that Pre-op. They did say the surgery was not typical because of traumatic sport injuries from 20 years ago when I had 3 surgeries for ACL, MCL, patella repair etc.
However, I’m starting to lose hope that this TKR will improve. Should I see a different PT? Should I push through and work the heck out of it??? I am unable to do long walks. Often still need a cane if I attempt. Standing for more than 20 minutes forget about it.
I’m also tired of people saying “boy, it does not look like your knee is getting any better”
    Please advise?

Still have stiffness @ 9 months. Range of motion is good and not painful. Don't seem to be making any progress with the stiffness post manipulation? PA told me they stretched skin over fibula to complete second surgery and fix the problem with the suture. Since then clicking in the knee and continuous pain at the fibula intersection with the tkr.
