I wouldn’t say Protestants know their Bible well, they just have a collection of verses they use to support whatever belief they’ve derived. Most, in my experience, don’t really know Christian theology or history at all.
Since 1983 in Texas, in the Bible belt, I avoided announcing that I was a devout Catholic because I I worked in sales. Bible belt Christians were sure Catholics are going to Hell with the devil. They are not afraid to Save the Catholics from Mary worship, the Pope, and the sacrifice of the Mass. Catholic Apologetics has been a friend saver magazine.
I live in Texas too, and I'm more open about being Catholic with strangers who are protestant. They won't come out and say I'm going to hell like they will with my dad, but once they realize I somewhat know the bible it's usually a series of protestant apologetics disguised as a conversation about Mere Christianity.

I Remember seeing the debates between Dr. Walter Martin and Fr. Mitch Pacwa a Jesuit Priest. Both stood for truth a few years ago Walter Martin’s daughter wrote a semi biography of his life and ministry and she mentions the relationship between and Fr. Pacwa she wrote before they will go on the to debate and talk about their agreements and disagreements would meet in a room talk and pray that truth would be spoken though them both they Loved each other.
I'm really having difficulty with this - what Gavin describes as "we're fellow Christians... but our differences matter." I'm not certain a "middle space" is the place to aim for. I find so many things discussed on different axes, not a single continuum, it makes "middle" kinda a misnomer. There's not a middle in the frameworks that provide a starting point for reconciling concepts or dogmas. The fact that we're brothers but also that the differences are occasionally spectacular for this reason is hard. It makes efforts even like this snippet conversation really meaningful to me and appreciated.

But Catholic theology also holds to Christ alone as the mediator and redeemer in salvation. Gavin seems like a decent guy, and it seems like he is engaging us (Catholics) in reasonably good faith. That said, I disagree with his assertion about being in the "trickiest" space between Prots and Catholics being a good/healthy thing. The split was never as Jesus intended (John 17), and history has demonstrated that the only way to preserve a unified Body of Christ is by way of a Pope as our leader under the protection of the Holy Spirit when settling disputes over dogma.
It was papal overreach that caused both 1054 and 1522. I am not Orthodox, but in terms of governance they have the most authentic expression of how the Church should function.

Man, I've tried to like Gavin because I really think he's a nice guy, but then I listen to him and am like, this man isn't stupid, he's dishonest, and then I can't like him. Because he knows that defending Protestantism is untenable, but he will twist and spin history to defend the indefensible. Some of these other Protestants I can see that they're really lost in the weeds and not aware of how wrong their believes are, but I can't say the same with Gavin. He knows Protestantism is wrong but he will defend it as if it is somehow can be equal or better than the divinely instituted church.
