But the existence of the free areas makes it "free to play" on a technicality. And that irritates people. It also doesnt help that they market it towards kids who need to ask their parents for money, rather than adults with a stable income. Hey dude this game is my guilty pleasure to the max. I sat down with some friends and we were like “hey let’s play wizard101 because it’ll be funny to play a trash kids game together” and I unironically really enjoyed the game, I bought a membership and have played the game for like 2 years now. The game kinda false advertises as free to play but really it’s more of a trial, that said beyond the membership you get access to the entire game which is easily several hundreds of hours gameplay. If you sit down and play it it’s actually super fun, and also the 300 players or whatever online is super inaccurate, the overwhelming majority of players play through the web download because data is non-transferable. The game’s servers (in game called realms) are estimated to hold at least 500 players each though the number is not definitely known and could be as high as 1000. At just about all times 1 server will be full and 2-4 other will be above 50% capacity meaning there’s at least 1000 players on most of the time. During peak activity times there will be 3-4 full servers and 2-4 above 50% capacity, meaning there’s likely at least 2000 players. The game is definitely not as active as it was in 2010 but if you’re playing by yourself it’s not hard to find a buddy or 2 to go play through the story with you.
