    Tri-Stringer, I got frustrated because I'd miss a lot of my shots. Then I realized that I can make people immobile if I aim and predict well.

    • @voguefurret
      @voguefurret 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Something I've come to realise about the Stringer after playing it for so long is that you're usually better off going for 70 damage on snipes, Then you're setting yourself up to hit two easy shots rather than miss two difficult ones.
      With its projectile speed and size at such long ranges it's usually not worth the gamble, Sometimes 70 damage alone might even be enough paired with a teamate or a previous explosion of yours.
      I do wish explosions were buffed to say 32 damage then you could combo in reverse without health recovery interupting, Explosions might even one-shot ink resistance targets with a well placed shot from 96 damage (90 damage only does that to enemies without).

    I learned this recently as a (relatively newish) hydra splatling player. It was really hard for me to get the splats I wanted, because in my mind if I exist in an opponent's general vicinity and I have a full charge, they spontaneously decide that corporeality is overrated. But I had a hard time actually making that a reality. I have definitely improved recently, and some adjustments I made include:
    - Charging behind cover so that my beam of concentrated death is less telegraphed.
    - Walking forward. I tend to keep opponents at the edge of my range, so this forces them to disengage & retreat or become acquainted with the grim reaper. I may move at a snail's pace but that's still faster than a statue.
    - Actually using my coddamned sub weapon. I'm running gear abilities so that I can do 2 full hydra charges and then throw a sub.

    • @chomik172
      @chomik172 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use Hydra Splatling too, it's an amazing weapon that I really enjoy. On many maps you can even reach enemy territory just by standing in the middle and having high ground.
      My preferred way of using Hydra is shooting people from distance before they can even notice. Dropping Booyah Bomb to the other end of the map is also something I like to do to slow down my opponents. Or just instantly get rid of one specific person, I suppose.
      As a Hydra player, you need to consider which spaces are "safe" and which are "effective" and move between them, or at least that's how I do it.

    "A lot of the time the solution is actually to set the fight up differently for yourself, so you don't have to hit hard shots"
    This is a lesson I learned back on The Conduit for Wii. TCon had a big mix of players, some using the classic controller (Dual Analog), and Wiimote (very accurate and fast motion aiming, even more so than Splatoon).
    It was generally agreed early on that motion aiming was superior, yet there were still a number of top players with Console backgrounds who stood out and topped the leader boards. I took the time to watch a lot of gameplay from their perspective to try and pick apart how to beat them more consistently, and what I discovered is that they had a style of play very different from most in that they did not rely on aiming to the same degree. They used every movement, spacing and prediction trick they could so that when things came to a fight, they didn't have to aim to land their shots. Their reticules were kept steady at all times where opponents were likely to appear before they ever got there.
    Motion control players would tend to not develop this nearly as much, as the control method invited them to exploit situations where they could aim fast and freely, and in fact made holding the reticle steady in a controlled position much more difficult, so they would jump into situations that would depend on them reacting to threats quickly and precisely.
    Ever since then the more I've watched competitive shooters, the more its stood out. The best players are the ones doing the least aiming during fights.
    If something is hard to do, you set your self up to do it as little as possible. When the spacing, and the movement, and using your tools to take away their movement options all fail, That is when they use superior technical skill to win, not before.
    Being able to win fights with incredible feats of technical skill is really fun and incredibly rewarding.
    But NEEDING to win fights with incredible feats of technical skill is a terrible way to set yourself up for competitive success.

  • @badingott

    As a stringer main hitting my shots is huge disadvantageous since you are mostly a controll weapon. I turf way more ink by taking enemies down slowly while establishing myself on the map and increasing my territory.

    It's definitely made some of my clips look very strange, as I aim directly in front of someone who just... doesn't go that direction, so it looks like I can't aim at all (and always, in hindsight, I want to say "Man if only I'd known they were gonna stop short and start turning, they were such an easy target in that moment!"), but ultimately I succeed in preventing a player from going somewhere I don't want them!
    Be it funneling them towards my teammates or putting obstacles in front of the objective, sometimes I just think about corralling the opponents _before_ I think about actually defeating them.

    this is a very good point honestly, i mostly weigh my failures on skill issue because mechanical skill is far outpaced by my decision making, my brain is just faster then my hands. i suppose it helps me stay motivated on trying to have the skill to keep up rather then trying to always compensate with working out a better angle in my head. i think i should apply this sometimes because said mentality is like aways wearing training weights, where sometimes i need to practice utilizing my full range of ability

  • @PrincessRinsicles
    @PrincessRinsicles 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    I do gotta say that the example you used isn't a good one at all from my experience. Usually, slowing down the rainmaker with ink (for only 5 points) isn't that viable, because just the slight bit of extra travel they get from lag is enough for the lead. And the squid roll they did slightly before the rainmaker also lets them dodge any ink on the ground below the RM. I think the pencil was doomed no matter what they did, unless they hit two super clutch shots in time, which seems very unlikely since you can't see the opponents until it's too late.
    Maybe throwing a sprinkler at it was the best option... haha.

    • @x23-w1o
      @x23-w1o 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Adding to this the other team, if playing optimally, would have waited to pick up the rain maker until someone had pressured the snipewriter off the angle, securing the win 100% of the time. Also if you were going to dive the rainmaker for points someone would have been prefiring paint on the ground anyway. On top of that you could have just walked though the enemy ink and gotten lead anyway if the snipewriter missed the first shot (they wouldn't have time to shoot twice after painting in front of the player before they took lead). And anyway just shooting the player directly would paint their feet about as much as shooting intentionally in front. Overall this just isnt a very good example. In general the only time you should be painting over/in front of someone instead of just shooting them is if they are outside of your range. Note that this is not to say you shouldnt paint over people instead of directly engaging- just make sure you are utilising your weapon's full range in order to increase your own survivability.

    This lesson was a pretty important turning point for me when I was trying to learn Tentabrella. Putting yourself into positions where you need to hit the one shot or die is the wrong way to play the weapon, cause we're all human and you don't often get a second shot in those kind of fights. The one shot is inconsistent, but the two shot is pretty darn consistent. With decent range and a mobile shield, you have the tools to set yourself up for advantageous fights where you can afford to not one shot.

    Some irony to getting better aim is that if aim becomes perfect, it can never matter again to who wins the game. The pieces in chess all have perfect aim, and that game is all about positioning.
    Having better positioning seems to be more fundamental to taking advantage of the mechanics of Splatoon than having better aim. Splatting a bunch of people (in a video game) is much more flashy, but all the things Gem discussed ultimately build up to a bigger effect than having better aim.
    Ideally one should not neglect hitting their shots better, but it will fix less problems than having better positioning.

    I would like to point out though, sometimes you do need to just work on your aim... Especially at the lowest of ranks. You can tell it's important to work on your aim there because many players there are using the aerosprays and rollers specifically to compensate for bad aim. Being able to out range them will get you through the lowest couple of ranks for free assuming you can aim. Don't get me wrong, taking smarter fights will get you there too, but sometimes when you're learning focusing on just the most important thing, your largest weakness is more important. I feel very strongly that this advice really starts to make sense when your progression starts to slow down. Maybe that's rank A or maybe it's rank X but hey.
