"The rich old guy who built what he said was an earthquake proof house had it fall on him, squish him and then he DIED! Welcome to Wellington." I can't lie. That was a banger of an opening.
Kiwi here. I was taught that the first European woman to arrive on these shores (aside from Dutch shipwrecks from the past etc) was a convict who stole a scarf and was sent to New Zealand as part of the punishment, lol. Never heard of this particular convict though - looking forward to learning about him!
I learnt most of this in school. But it takes Tony Robinson to make it interesting! Some of my ancestors arrived in Wellington (or technically, Petone) in 1840 on the Bengal Merchant
That intro lmao! A Wellingtonian at heart living on the other side of the world now... I remember earthquakes being such a common thing that the only time I panicked was when my son was on the loo at the back of the house (an old colonial cottage) which was on a big drop behind, and a strong one hit. Worried that he was gonna fall off the edge along with the bathroom! Otherwise shakes were a normal thing, growing up in Taupo eruptions too, is weird to now live somewhere without these things! Edit; living in Hamburg, I get a good reminder of the weather but it isn't quite the same as Windy Wellington with the sideways rain! 😂

Tony is a GEM you'll love him :)
Lots of escaped convicts were sealers and whalers on the coast in early 1800s,some were dropped off on islands down south for years and abandoned...
@@geoffbell166 did you hear about that ship they found last week "Endurance" ??

I teared up when Sir Peter brought out the Blackadder costume. Recognised the sleeve instantly. Amazing.

The "we're Werewolves not swearwolves ' mob or something different?
Peter Jackson's company town. Scary.

I remember when Tony Robinson was in Blackadder.
How can't I have found this channel earlier
Tony should have signed his old costume.
I love how excited he is in beginning about the front of the parliament building lol
Heh, pretty sure the road over from mine is named after the Wakefields.
T-Rob knows what's up.
Might be time for a Blackadder update
Paddy is the kiwi version of hachiko
I feel like the dogs understand the story
Are we going to dismiss how sprite Tony is in these shows?
Yeah that's right Pavalova belongs to New Zealand!
I hope that lady he scratched behind the ears was his wife or something. :D Or at least that he got permission.
You mean like, cheated, tricked, murdered and stole from the land original people.
