I ALSO played about a million hours of Sid Meier’s Pirates. I played the old black and white one and the Xbox version. It was a HUGE influence on Pirate Borg.
Thanks for the recommendation, I ordered the special edition cover and got it in the mail already! It's so good. Glad I splurged for the special edition.
Pirates of the Caribbean was fun, particularly the first one (movies). I like characters having flaws, and being assigned a flaw by roll instead of choosing one could be fun!
Welllll, great, that's another 40 quid I have to explain to the missus. I love the "Borg" system and all the crazy 3rd party games it has spawned. I've been running Mörk Borg and CY_BORG for a bit now, currently waiting for CorpBorg from Kickstarter, and have Death in Space (amazing janky sci-fi from Stockholm Kartel) and Demon Dog, which is another Mörk Borg spin-off. It's a great, simple system that really lends itself to some horribly hilarious situations (who doesn't love having their teeth fall out and are replaced by fingernails if you fumble casting a spell??). I wasn't planning to get this one because it seemed kind of niche, but, you've convinced me; honestly, even if we don't play it, I just love the books and the artwork and it's worth having them just for that. If yis haven't tried Cy_Borg yet, put it in the queue; I'd love to get a review from you.
Cyborg is definitely something we want to take a look at as soon as possible. We love the system and would love to see how it applies to even more settings. We'd love to hear your comments if you do end up picking up a copy! Keep your sword arm free.
Picked up Pirate Borg a month ago, then this past weekend at the Northglenn Pirate Fest, picked up another book and met Luke in person. Signed my regular copy. The ships are I believe MDF laser cut, and then the Oak and Iron ships. I actually met Luke (the creator of Pirate Borg) back during Covid we played in an Oak and Iron campaign on the Pirate team... Pirates Won over English, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Luke does all the artwork, talented guy. I've yet to get to play Everything is better with Pirates
I’ve played Mork Bork before & absolutely love the ease of play w/ system. I MUST play their Pirate 🏴☠️ Game. When I buy my copy I will be sure to mention this podcast/channel to let ‘em know who is spreading the good word. LOVE THE CHANNEL!!
Great review. I have the book myself and it is pure class. Wonderful product in terms of look and style. It's well made too. Really hope to get this to table soon. The publishers make a rules reference sheet, charater gen walk through and a fully automated generator available so, you could run a lean version of the game using just that for free to see how you like it.
Lots of cool ways to find out about games. I heard about some games at the SVP (Society of Vertebrate Paleontology) convention--people were just playing in hall in the convention center, sitting on the floor. One girl was giving out game cards as her personal business card. I played Taphonomy, Red Flags, and Cards Against Humanity during field season, as well as bringing Concept and getting others to play.
Old West, not pirate setting, but deserters used to cut cedar (juniper) posts and sell them in northwest Colorado. Not all wars are popular with the general public, so some people are friendly to deserters/AWOLs.
I played a game called Seven Seas or something like that. It was a pretty fun game but nothing like Pirate Borg. Deadlands The Weird West by Pinnacle is similar to Pirate Borg with the perks and quirks for characters and was the funest Cowboy game. It has been remade in the Savage Worlds line but I like the character creation by Pinnacle much better. We did play a Pirate campaign in D&D that was a lot of fun but nothing like your Pirate Borg game.
Great stuff.... funny! Nice intro vid on the system. I've got so many games right now that are sitting and not getting played, that I'll likely not pick this up just yet, though. Sounds like ya'll had a blast, mate's! 👊🤓🤪Thnx
I've seen enough people with a hook for a hand, prosthetic leg(s), arm(s), etc. to believe many pirates could be getting around while afflicted thus. One of my mom's friends may have a glass eye--only one of his eyes is functional, at any rate. He doesn't wear an eyepatch, but it doesn't quite look like a normal eye either.
Interesting. I got the original and cyberborg but I got them as art pieces I didn’t think they were fleshed out enough to be playable so didn’t grab pirateborg. Will take a look. Thanks.
Tbh I really don't like the presentation of Mork Borg cus I found it a bit too... Pretentious? Posch? It just felt way too much and I'm a metalhead lol But I'll take your word for it and I may check out this game simply because it's pirates and you both recommend it ✌💀
I really want to like Mork Borg because I'm also a metalhead, but from what I've seen of it, it seems like - besides a ruleset - just a collection of setting hooks. If they ever released an actual setting, I'd be much more likely to buy it. But of course, it would have to have a lot fewer crazy font and layout weirdness, so it could be useable.
Pirate Borg kinda goes for a different style. Its still very art-heavy, and the setting isnt terribly fleshed out (theres basically a page for each faction with a paragraph or two of text), but since you can take a lot of your real-world knowledge, it doesnt matter much. Plus, it has some really nifty generators to make up for it. Islands, derelicts, treasure maps - theres a generator for it. In fact, theres just a lot of really decent GM tools included. Even if youre not into the system, you can get a decent chunk of vslue just from the random tables. Plus, the art is a lot more subdued and doesnt get into the way of the rules.
I played about a million hours of Sid Meier's Pirates! on C-64, Amiga, and PC remake. This sounds like its right up my ally :D
I ALSO played about a million hours of Sid Meier’s Pirates. I played the old black and white one and the Xbox version. It was a HUGE influence on Pirate Borg.
I STILL play Sid Meier's Pirates!
I still play Sid Meier's Pirates on my steam deck! That game rules!
Pirate Borg is the best of the Borg systems. The others are no where near as well fleshed out. I'm glad you had fun with it.
Thanks for the recommendation, I ordered the special edition cover and got it in the mail already! It's so good. Glad I splurged for the special edition.
So glad to hear you like it! Keep your sword arm free!

Definitely one of our favorite aspects. It made the game way more interesting! Keep your sword arm free!

Everything is better with Pirates
Agreed! Luke seems like a good guy. Send us a note after you get a chance to play. Would love to hear your opinion.

I MUST play their Pirate 🏴☠️ Game. When I buy my copy I will be sure to mention this podcast/channel to let ‘em know who is spreading the good word. LOVE THE CHANNEL!!
Thanks so much for the support! We really appreciate it, and really hope you enjoy the game. Keep your sword arm free!
Loved the recommendation, bought myself the PDF version of the book!
Glad you liked it! Let us know how you enjoy the game. It is one of our current favorites.

Top-tier intro and a great review of the game I had never heard about before. The perfect summary of why I enjoy this channel so much.
Thanks Robby, we always appreciate the support! Keep your sword arm free!
I loved the black powder poet, beauty with BOOM!
There is always beauty with BOOM.
I backed this one on Kickstarter....love it!
I've already bough Pirate Borg, haven't read it through yet, but the book is awesome!
It's a great game, 100% recommend!
Games with built in humor... Sweet!
Very cool.
Thanks Warlocks!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
It's a heck of a game, we couldn't recommend more!

We've done pirate campaigns before too, but this was a whole new level of fun. Definitely recommend.

It's tough to fit new games in for sure. We couldn't recommend more strongly though. Thanks Ray!
Real history+fantasy=great role playing game!

At first glance we maybe had the same thought, but we couldn't have been more wrong. Absolutely loved it.
