- While in town for the New York Film Festival premiere of his new film A COUPLE, legendary director Frederick Wiseman stopped by the Criterion office for a visit. We were honored to have him take a short and sweet trip inside our films closet.

The frequency of these closet pick videos have gone up considerably. Not that I'm complaining mind.
I wish they'd do a remaster of BUFFALO '66 and THE BROWN BUNNY so we could get Vincent Gallo in the closet. That madman wizard would have some *opinions.*
There are usually more closet visits during NY Film Festival when many filmmakers come to NYC, where the Criterion headquarter and this closet are.

Mr. Wiseman has one unreleased film, called "The Garden," about Madison Square Garden during 1998. Wiseman shot ball games and other entertainment held in the arena, and also some close-door meetings of MSG executives. It was due to those meetings that MSG objected to the film being shown, and Wiseman wouldn't budge, and wouldn't delete anything from the film. The two sides couldn't reach a deal, and the film was pulled one day before its Sundance premiere. To this day, the film is still in limbo. You can Google for a 2005 New Yorker article for more detail. I emailed Mr. Wiseman recently and he said there still had been no progress in having the film shown.
There is a not great “unofficial” copy with a problematic soundtrack floating around in the ether if you are super desperate. I suspect it’ll get some sort of proper (or suitable) release eventually but, hey, life is short.
Please say you are doing a Wiseman box set.

I saw his doc EX LIBRIS some 5 years ago and its magnanimous presentation of the New York Public Library during the festival circuit. Still think about it often, more so than Titicut Follies

Brevity isn't something I associate with Wiseman.
The example of Titicut Follies is instructive as we see increased calls for censorship from powerful state actors. Wiseman is a titan of documentary filmmaking, but also someone who truly spoke truth to power.

The Wiseman Institutions series just finished last week at the local indie theater here in Columbia. I’m pretty lucky to have seen seven of his films on the big screen, three of them on 35mm.

High School. People in NE Philly are just the loveliest! Most astounding scene was when the bully was being confronted for hitting a classmate who wore glasses. " But sir, I wear glasses too.." and then zooms right into the scar under his eye! Also, the drag dance in the auditorium, classic!

agreed. the sheer amount of fantastic films he's made is staggering. might be the most consistently great filmmaker ever imo.

I just re-visited 'Down by Law' recently (my 2nd viewing after years and years), and enjoyed it even more. Characters you're not sure if you care about or hate... kinda like how they feel about each other. I dig that dynamic a lot.

Knife in the Water is great, and I know what he means by the literal and abstract in that movie. Plenty of subtext and symbolism there.

I just found it at a public library in Southbrige, Massachusetts.
Knife in the Water, oh yea. Saw it for first time a year or two ago on the Criterion Channel, now have it in buy list for a blu ray purchase in near future, Criterion release of course! FWIW, I subscribe/unsubscribe to the channel off and on, about a month two at a time to screen movies for potential future buys. Back to the movie, the image that won't go away is the close up of the woman riding in front seat of car wearing black horn-rimmed glasses....just her look, expression in silence while riding hooked me early in the film; that's what cinema can do.
I love him and his films.
