    Really great to see lock gates being replaced, used them enough times and marvelled at how well balanced they were and learnt the true meaning of 'balance beam', but its good to see the bits as users we don't normally see. I have only just found your channel so have been binge watching. Its great that you do this, it may well show the public at large just how much engineering is involved in something that they just walk past and think nothing of. Thanks again, keep up the great work. If ever i bump into you in a pub and you are agreeable i would happily buy you a pint.

    Thanks for the video. This adds to the gate construction video from "cruising the cut", so now we know much of whats involved in gate maintenance and operation.

    Looks warm but temperature there gets down towards freezing in mid-February. They have to work in winter when the canal traffic is low.

    To see how much work goes into changing lock gates if they are damaged by irresponsible boating.

    I wonder how they replace the upsream gates. Do they install a coffer dam to hold back the water? The first upstream gate holds back miles of canal water.

    • @tonygill7790
      @tonygill7790 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just above the top gates, there is a slot in the brickwork which allows what are called stop planks to be inserted allowing the whole lock including the water immediately above the top gates to be drained!

    Wonder if the new gates will last as long as the ones they are replacing? Old growth or slow growth timber seems to last longer than plantation grown wood.

    Those guys leaning on the fence should be cleaning out all that rubble at the
    bottom of the gates. Wooden railway ties seem to be impregnated with pitch or something, wondered why they didn't do this with this wood. Would it poison the water maybe?

    Still using open-ended spanners should be ring at least and what about power tools you need a hammer one to undo and the spanner to make fine adjustments. still using Whitworth or have they gone metric

    • @tobys_transport_videos
      @tobys_transport_videos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do the tools matter? They get the job done, don't they? Nobody is hurt. Nobody is made redundant. Where's the problem? Whitworth, Imperial, or Metric, it makes no difference so long as the gates work properly and safely.

    What's the cost of a new pair of gates? I heard £30 000 but that sounds a lot. Also, What happens to the old ones? I could make some decent raised beds out of them.

    • @spencerwilton5831
      @spencerwilton5831 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vanderlynden Jengold £30,000 is not a lot for several tons of solid oak, made to order to differing sizes for every job. You can easily spend £30,000 on a chipboard kitchen, frankly I'm surprised these gates don't cost more but then they are probably made in house rather than by a profit making concern.

    • @IrishSchaller
      @IrishSchaller 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Brant looking at those old gates, they don’t seem to be rotten. I think the main problem is wear and tear rather than rotting and then an even more expensive tropical wood would not last any longer so no point.
