Great tour Stefan. I am always impressed that you get rid of things if they are not useful, even if they are pretty! I guess that’s the difference between a working shop and a hobby shop, where you can keep hold of things for the pleasure of owning them!
Thanks! I try to do that. But there are things that I cant get rid for the life of me - The moore rotary table for example. I used that thing once (1) in 5 years. But its such an insane nice tool...and the day will come when I need it for a job.
Thanks for taking the time to film another shop tour in detail. It definitely wasn't too long and I doubt it ever could be. I just love shop tours as you can always get so many tips, tricks and organizing solutions out of them, especially when it is somewhat comparable to the own homeshop (size wise that is). Best of luck with your first full time year!
I run a prototype shop for an aerospace company and I work totally alone in a building away from the office. I love it. I thouroughly enjoyed your shop tour. Imagine a small kid being allowed into a workshop AND permitted, nay, positively encouraged to ask "what it is? what id does? and that? what is in this drawer? why it is here? why? what?" FOR 2 HOURS! No, definitely not bored. Thank you so much, Stefan! Happy New Year!
Stefan- I take issue with your description of you as a “goofball “. You are a very well educated, very fluent, very generous educator. The tour has been fascinating, looking forward to the end of the year tour- after a year of work and adjustments. The brief description of your prior journey was informative. Always wondered about how you got where you are. Not too long, could listen and watch for three or four times as long! It’s always a pleasure to see what you have time to record, can count on learning many things in each video. Happy New Year to you back, and may you have a creative and profitable hiatus!
Ppl don't realize the effort and energy required to plan/script , film, redo, triage and edit a video until they try it themselves. I've tried, and will again but usually I just want to get on with my project :-) I found this video very encouraging for me as a hobby machinist. I recently added air at each machine, so much easier. thank you for all the effort you take in sharing your skills.
Thanks for that Stefan. I made it to the end without getting board! The comments about what you'd do differently were perticularly interesting. Happy new year.
Thank you! Happy new year to you too. I think its important to be critical about the things we do and always think about other options and improvements.
I'll second that Peter, The critical insight you gave has caused a slight change in direction in the rotary broach build I'm currently working on and prompted a complete rethink on the forthcoming carbide grinder build. Thanks Stefan that was a great shop tour!
I am almost in tears experiencing this most marvelous work space you have created. I am unable to maintain a well defined area for my hobby. I'll be insisting on one when next we move. In the meantime, thank you for showing us what is possible!
Stefan thanks for the shop tour update. Well done! I enjoy your videos. Besides the excellent content but the lack of overt ads and silly, extended, goofball intros so many others use are very welcome!!
Hello Stefan, wow awesome shop tour, I love how you made use of the space for all of your machines and tooling, you are truly an amazing man, the things you know, your brain must be like a sponge, I really loved your shop tour, thanks for sharing with us, many thanks, cheers from me 😷👍👍👍
Made it to the end with a several starts and stop going out to the shop and working myself. Great video. I know the ultra long format may not be great for many.. but you are doing specific, precise, work, and it all has value. I find myself gravitating to you, robin, tom when he posts, Edge Precision, CaLem, Adam The Machinist, etc. Well done and happy new year. Your ability to take a one year sabbatical and not simply be fired is not something common in the US. You are a luck man. Enjoy NZ and your first venture into air travel. Something I am not a fan of, but I guess you can sit on the flight hoping the components in the aircraft were made to your standards.
Aircraft parts are extremely well documented and you can rely on them. Except for the ones where those making the documentation are less honest than Stephan.
Stefan just watched the entire video. For the second time.👍 Not sure if I’m crazy or if you just have great content that is so full of information that it often requires multiple views. I’m sure a lot of professional machinists find some of this “ common knowledge “ ( not all of it) but as a hobbiest with a very small basement shop I often watch your videos multiple times and learn something new each time. Thank you for the effort you put into sharing your knowledge ( and often your thought process which I find very helpful)
I appreciate all the effort you have put into sharing this macro view of your shop. Full of great ideas, and philosophies for maximizing space, efficiency, and organization. Any aspiring home shop owner could take many lessons from this document. You have already imparted much of that gained wisdom so generously in your previous videos but to see it in context all displayed in this wonderful tour is well worth your production effort. Thanks Stefan, great work as usual. Live long and prosper. ; )
Enjoyed every second Stefan, beautiful shop and very well organized. I only have 500 square feet so I know what it's like maximizing every cubic inch of space. At the end I was wondering about the Moore rotary table but you finally showed it. Hope you enjoy your year and end up with great success and a clear answer on the direction to take. ATB, Robin
Fantastic tour Stefan. I'm still amazed at how clean you manage to keep your shop and floors looking so clean, especially the wood OSB one. Enjoy your vacation and your sabbatical, here's to a great year!
I once took a sabbatical also. It was a great move for me and hopefully for you also. Best of luck with it mate. NZ is a beautiful place, full of amazing scenery and natural wonders. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Thanks for taking the time to do a shop tour. I enjoy seeing other people's shops, particularly small ones, and getting ideas from them.
Hi Stefan, In addition to wishing you a very happy and prosperous 2023, I take this opportunity to tell you that I really appreciate your channel. Your videos are very informative, and the craftsmanship is a joy to see. I hope that in this year you will have much pleasure in making the video's yourself, now that you are taking a sabbatical.
Hi from the Netherlands. Have fun in NZ. Besides machining, fly fishing NZ is another of my passions. I’m heading there mid February for the 7th trip. Enjoy it. It’s a wonderful place. Enjoy yourself.
Sometimes it's good to see a whole shop for perspective. Comparing to my own shop, it's easy to see things that you have which are needed. But, it's also very good to see ways of organizing stuff. Yes it was a long video, but for these I treat them as continuing education. Not necessary every day, but once in a while good to refresh on details learned and reinforced. Have a happy new year. And good luck!
New subscriber from Santa Fe, New Mexico USA. It's very interesting to see the diversity of European machines. And your video quality and narration are quite good.
I'll have to continue watching tomorrow, it's late in the evening there. Thanks heaps for all your videos this year and past. Hope you have a wonderful break in NZ and all the best for your business adventure. May 2023 bring you good health and happiness.
Stefan, you always offer up quality content that is both educational and entertaining. Thank you. Have a terrific vacation and best wishes going forward on your solo entrepreneurial journey.
I have always been super impressed by the work you do. I wish you the very best of luck (which you make for yourself). You have shown that you are a delight that anyone would appreciate. Looking forward to the next chapter of your life. Enjoy your holiday, you deserve it.
Very interesting shop tour. You have a lot of equipment in a relatively small space but in an efficient layout. Wishing you a successful transition into full time self-employment in 2023! Happy New Year!
Thank you for your videos. Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for the respect of your viewers. I wish you all the best for 2023. I'm sure I speak for most when I say we'll take videos when you can make them, your income comes first, everything else for us is a welcome bonus!
I love your content, stefan, as I'm sure many do. I promise to watch your full pre- and post-roll advertisements every time I watch your videos. Good luck to you in this year of discovery.
The pure quality of your work and productions are much better selling point than any ad. That is not easy to do. If you look at others who do this you can see that it is hard to keep up. So cheers to you we know full well how hard this is. You should do a chat with This Old Tony....your dead pan and his child like humor is a great mix. Cheers!!! oh Happy New Year.
Hi Stefan. First I wish you a Happy (and prosperous!) New Year. Thank you for all your videos, I have found them personally uplifting and mood changing and I am very grateful to you for that. I found that your videos work on so many levels, not 'just' the quality and excellence of your work but also in your approach and your mind set. You are putting out a quality product. Don't worry about the audio - it's a workshop after all! First time I flew was after I met my late wife - enjoy New Zealand, it looks a wonderful country. Right, back to your shop tour ..... 🎉
No you dont sound arrogant, i appreciate your content, and the tips you share, and i noticed that taking a sabatical is a huge decision icould see in your expression, because it will be one year without coworkers, and the socialization that comes with it. i felt that way when i was layoff for two months, being used to work for 23 years, all of the sudden i had 2 months to myself, in lockdown, that's when projects started forming in my mind just to have something to share with fellow enthusiasts. I wish i could support you in patreon, in a matter of fact there is no guilt in getting a income from content you created, and having a patreon, im used to make tutorials and i know all the work that comes with it, and i like to share things to help others, so getting a bit of money is all good, i prefer to support a maker that shares his love for what he does, than a shady multimillion company that usually is managed only with profit in mind. no soul on that.
Stefan - I wish you the very best as you embark on this new adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the shop tour and narration. The best couple of hours I’ve spent on youtube in some time. Thank you 🙏 I’m headed over to Patreon now to sign up 👍👍😎👍👍
Well that was great. Given the length of the video and my short attention span I intended to watch it in two or three bites but watched it from start to finish in one chunk, didn't even get up for a piss 😂. Some great ideas there💡 that will help me in my little workshop after a disruptive year. 👍
It was a great video, and I certainly picked up a couple of good ideas. Best of luck with going solo, it is a big change, as you know the interaction with fellow humans is one of the toughest things to keep going. If you make the time and don't put off the once a week get together with friends thinking you have to keep working it really helps. Once I started to manage my shop time and my "me" time better and kept them separate I was a much happier person. Took me quite a few years to force myself to do it though, I always had a back log of work. I used to let it be a burden, finally just had to learn to manage my own self expectations and workload scheduling as well as my customers expectations. It took a bit to accept that I was just a mere mortal, and three months of work wasn't all getting done this week... Happy 2023, lets hope it is a bit less weird than the last two years.
Stefan; "If i were a CNC machine" but wait......then you don't need social interaction, and that is precisely what you do need! It was a lot to take in, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Take care Stefan.
That's a big step, congratulations on being at that point where you can make that decision. Your channel pay wise should be commensurate with the quality of your work and abilities. It's not an easy thing. Great work, I love watching and relaxing to your videos.
You have added capabilities all the time that I been watching as you grew into a business. Being self employed is good and bad. Don't let it run you life. I've been self employed my entire life. Expanded from just self to 24 employees, a mistake! 2 or 4 employees that work well together would be ideal. You've built a business on small precision parts making but working alone has it's drawbacks also. Thank you for the shop tour. Travel is good for the soul.
Best of luck in your sabbatical year Stefan, It's very interesting to hear you talk about the financial side of things. I'm in no doubt whatsoever that you produce this channel for reasons other than financial gain, I'm quite sure it would be far more profitable to just drop the camera and get on with making your customers parts. I work in the Motorsports engineering business in England. It's a highly pressurised industry, we make highly specialised parts that have to be right first time and sometimes to almost impossible deadlines on delivery dates, this means we are frequently working into the night. The thought of trying to do this work whilst simultaneously filming and editing a video channel would fry my brain, and for sure it would lead to the work not going out the door on time. So hats off to you for sharing your passion.
Thank you for this video. I really appreciate the invitation into your shop. You will love your sabbatical and your priorities in work and life will become (at least slightly more) clear by the end. 🎉
Good luck with your new venture and have a great time in NZ ! You are lucky that the company you work for agreed with this - many wouldn't and it would be a case of leave or stay.
Great shop tour. Lots of good ideas. Wishing you all the best in ‘23 and looking forward to following along as you test drive the full time business adventure.
Thank you for the tour. I find small shops more interesting than large ones as they more relatable (my own, pure hobby shop is a bit more than half of our house's two car garage). One aspect of your shop I will not duplicate is storing heavy/expensive equipment on high shelves as I live in an area prone to earthquakes. For the same reason, all my machines and cabinets are bolted to the floor.
Oh! Thats something I never thought off, since we have basicaly no natural disasters, let alone earthquakes here. Yeah, maybe not put a 32 piece anvil collection on a top shelf :D
Well I made it through the whole shop tour. Thank you so much for putting this together. I’m really looking forward to to your next years offerings. This is going to help me a lot organize and re-think my shop layout. Cheers and Happy New Year from Vancouver, 2023 is going to be great!
Hi Stefan, great video. You have so much tooling, nice set up. You should have 500,000 subscribers! I hope your machining business works out for you. Would you make a video showing how to use onshape?
"This small wooden thing that I built when I was thinking that woodworking is cool" ... 😂. Oh boy, the woodworkers are going to love that comment. Very enjoyable, as always. Thank you Stefan, and may your sabbatical open the door to great new experiences.

All of my fellow US residents. TH-cam videos give us amazing insights into how things work in other countries- how many of us could take a year off with a guarantee that the job would still be there. This difference also became evident when other Euro machinists dealt with cancer, one himself and a foul mouthed Brit dealt with his wife’s cancer and not once did they mention how much the illness cost. Best of luck..
Thanks so much for this shop tour and all you do! Definitely not too long or too much detail. I've learned so much from your videos and this one has given me many ideas for my own small shop. Many thanks! All my best wishes to you for your sabbatical year.
I work by myself every day (telecomm lineman), I absolutely wouldn't change a thing about it, but like you said, it's easy to become a goblin. Luckily I do fieldwork, so periodically I have to interact with a customer while I'm on a work order. You actively have to take anti-goblin countermeasures.
Happy New Year! I was amazed how much tools you can put into a 25m2 shop. Without pretty high level of organization it's impossible to fit so many tools into a small space.
Best to you in the new year. I always enjoy your channel. I am a retired industrial electronic technician from Big Oil, but my second career choice was to be a machinist. I appreciate seeing the speciality items you manufacture. Part of a career is to enjoy what you do and be able to control the stress that all jobs have at times.
I am 80 year's old and over 30 year's as a machinist I love to see you work hope that more kids would take up the trade.
Ppl don't realize the effort and energy required to plan/script , film, redo, triage and edit a video until they try it themselves. I've tried, and will again but usually I just want to get on with my project :-)
I found this video very encouraging for me as a hobby machinist. I recently added air at each machine, so much easier. thank you for all the effort you take in sharing your skills.
Time for yourself!
Hope it's great, and you do everything you set yourself to do.
Been watching this guy for years, trust me this guy is top notch, world class.
Hey my brother. Thanks for letting me hangout with you, even if it was one sided. I enjoyed your good company.
Hi Stefan,
In addition to wishing you a very happy and prosperous 2023, I take this opportunity to tell you that I really appreciate your channel.
You did not 'bore me to death', mate.
Fascinating, and also sort of inspiring on how you can fit so much into a small precise space.
Cheers!
Mate I hope your break is restorative and hassle free.
I'll have to continue watching tomorrow, it's late in the evening there. Thanks heaps for all your videos this year and past. Hope you have a wonderful break in NZ and all the best for your business adventure. May 2023 bring you good health and happiness.
Happy New Year Stefan, you are absolutely one of my favorite goofballs doing stuff on TH-cam!
Happy New Year from Oz. New Zealand is a great place for a first trip too but if you get bored jump the ditch and come and visit here 😉
Stefan, you always offer up quality content that is both educational and entertaining. Thank you.
Have a terrific vacation and best wishes going forward on your solo entrepreneurial journey.
Stef we all love you and will never leave you my man! I can speak for everyone here and tell you that your content is unique as you.
Hi Stefan, many thanks for sharing your knowledge! Have fun in New Zealand (a wonderfull place to be) and enjoy the flights! A great new year!
Here's to a silver play button for Stefan in 2023! Thanks for all the great videos!
Amazing how you fit such a capable shop in two small rooms. Thanks for all the great vids. I have learnt so much here. Happy 2023 (:
Stefan - I wish you the very best as you embark on this new adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the shop tour and narration. The best couple of hours I’ve spent on youtube in some time. Thank you 🙏 I’m headed over to Patreon now to sign up 👍👍😎👍👍
Thanks for all your intresting video’s .
All the best wishes for 2023 , enjoy your well deserved holiday and sabatical
Grüsse aus den Niederlände
Stefan, I watched the entire video. Thanks for a peak into how your mind works on organizing things. Have a great 2023!
Das beste kommt zum schluss! :D Das Highlight des Jahres! Ich freue mich immer sehr über deine Videos.
Dankeschön!
Excellent video, thanks for taking the time to film, edit and share.
Wishing you the best for 2023.
As a New Zealander. I welcome you and wish you the absolute best in your visit to my country.
Neat shop tour, even at 2x. Thank you for your videos. Cratex was added to my shop because of you. Best purchase of the year for me.
Your scrap metal is more organized than my life.
30 Multifix holders? I was thinking that i was overdoing it with 12.
Your dedication is impressive.
Happy New Year Stefan!
Hello Stefan, I see your channel as an expert and authorotive resource that it is. I applaud your decision and will continue to view your content. Enjoy your decompression time. I am confident you will find the perfect balance.
01:31:11 "This place is always a little bit of a mess..." Mate I can't even *see* my workbench! 😅 I wish you every success for the flying solo. Gute rutsch.
Stefan.... Thanks for a fabulous 2022, and one of the best (and LEAST boring) shop tours of the year .
25 sq. m. .... all that gear...... a tall bloke,,,,, and you didn't bump the camera tripod once !!!! Amazing.
I hope you have a good "sabbatical" , a great trip to NZ, and lots more great videos.
Regards,
Robert ( Sydney, Australia)
Absolutely amazing place, space and use of it, well done
Thoroughly enjoyed it, everything organised and in it's place, my OCD approves 👍
Good luck for the new venture. Used to use a sylvac height gauge did the same things just smaller. Great things and a great time saver.
Following this channel almost a decade, it becames a bias reference for me, appreciate all care, attention and time dedicated about designing stuff, with total respect, i think the rest of the world could recognize all your effort, we hope to support, enjoy the journey 🚀
That wasn't boring at all. Thank you for showing us around. Happy new year too you too.
hi stefan, i made it all the way to the end and enjoyed all of it. happy 2023 to you and hope the next year workes for you. regards richard.
Thank you! Wish you the same :-)
Boring? Long? Are you crazy? That was great! Watched it all. Nice job. Very interesting.
Your shop is really nice. When looking carefully you have plenty of extreme high quality items/instruments where it matters, measuring and workholding.
Wishing you nothing but the best for 2023 Stefan ! Looking forward to seeing what 2023 has to offer ! Take care buddy!
God Bless you Stefan; you are a huge inspiration to me as a lifelong machinist myself since 12 y/o (28 years old) i hope one day to be even half as successful as you are with your own business! you are doing an amazing job and i wish you nothing but the most success in all your endeavors. thank you for the constant videos and everything i have learned and continue to learn from you. i tell everyone i know in my trade about your videos and how educational they are and everyone that tunes in loves them! keep up the amazing work! and happy New Year to you and your family.
Your shop is simply impressive. Awesome work and also your technical level as well!
Hello Stefan,
An interesting shop tour... Best wishes for 2023 and I hope working from home (your own business) is an success.
Take care.
Paul,,
Happy New Year! I was amazed how much tools you can put into a 25m2 shop. Without pretty high level of organization it's impossible to fit so many tools into a small space.
I really enjoyed using our older “Tessa Hite “ height gauge a few years ago. I hope that you get several decades of service out of it.
We depended upon it for discernment and it delivered decidedly.
Looking forward to seeing what you create in 2023, Happy New Year from Kentucky.
The fact that you have huge sauerkraut cans is pleasing for some reason
Even better, since I cant stand sauerkraut :D
@@StefanGotteswinter lol oh wow, i love it
I loved the Tour! Thank you. The six months rule needs implementation in my shop!
Of course, we're watching it all! What are You babbling about? 🤣
TH-cam doesn't get any better than this, You know!
Have a Happy New Year, and enjoy the vacation! 🤩👍
I had written a much longer comment, but managed to delete it. The gist of it was that I wish you the best on your new endeavours, may 2023 be very fruitfull to you and your family. Thabks for all the knowledge that you share, take care!!
