For anyone still unclear on the tournament format, this is called a "double elimination" bracket. Generally speaking, everyone starts in the winners bracket (unless there is some round prior to the main bracket like a Swiss or Round Robin, or some external criterion that impacts the bracket) and you are not eliminated from the tournament until you lose twice in the bracket. Losing in the winners bracket sends you to the losers bracket, where you compete against other players who have lost once, and losing in the losers bracket eliminates you. The winner of the losers bracket proceeds to the grand final to face the winner of the winners bracket. Because the winners-side grand finalist is undefeated, the losers-side grand finalist must defeat the winners-side player twice to win the tournament-the first of such victories is called the "bracket reset", which is the term Gotham was referring to-while the winners-side player only has to defeat the losers-side player once to win the tournament. This format is very common in video games and is the standard for most fighting game tournaments.
@@Peterkringle I'm aware that it is used for some athletics, but I couldn't say which ones or how often. I'm a gamer, though, so I know at least that much wouldn't be misinformation.
@@BlueGrovyle didn’t mean to be contentious - I think your comment was helpful. It’s pretty commonplace in softball and baseball at young ages all the way through high school. What is interesting to me is that Blitz Chess Magnus is rated highest at 2888, and Alireza is second rated at 2871, when you look at Rapid Chess, Magnus is rated highest at 2834, and Alireza is eleventh rated at 2742. The 10 minutes per player, rather than less, is more of an advantage for Magnus.
Been watching Gotham since I started playing chess at 10th grade and now I'm at 12th grade, just wanna say Happy Teachers day because for me ur my teacher and u taught me many things, love from PH.
I always like it when GothamChess explain complex chess concepts that we beginner/intermediate players struggle to understand. I mean I don't even play chess but I always enjoy watching these chess videos and still learn.
The first move took one minute due to technical issues, and Alireza waited for one minute in the fourth move out of respect for Magnus. Great respect for Alireza❤🔥
Do you suppose he covered this because it features the best player of all time against one of the top few players in the world and it just took place a couple of days ago?
it’s just wild how good magnus really is like idk how it’s possible to beat him? how can he lose an endgame he always finds the win or a draw in the most unwinnable positions

How is it possible for chess players to spot so much in so little time? And not just like Magnus did in the last game. I see Levy do it frequently too. Things that would take me a minute to analyze, he does in a couple seconds. I can’t comprehend how experience makes that sort of a difference.
I watched this match live he wasn't late mangu was having technical issues. This match was so much fun to watch. I started using the Sicilian Defense and I have won alot of games using this defense
If magnus is king of chess, "fire"ouza is clearly the prince! (Still waiting for a queen since polgar's retirement...but perhaps little bodana is a young, up and coming princess of chess on her way to take her rightful throne! :) )
Hey Levi, can u do a video on Magnus stats? The guy has only lost a handful of tournaments the last decade and it would be interesting to see the breakdown
I appreciate your videos! It’s great to have someone explain moves and understand why can’t they make moves. It’s great content and I love to watch the videos, you and Hikaru make great content! And I’m thankful for it 😊
You know Magnus respects you when he’s only a minute late
Ey this comment the one😂😂
He wasn’t late. He was there and having technical difficulties (from what it seemed)
🤣🤣🤣
Noooo he was there
@@isaacaguilar5642sorry, meant to respond, but I’ve been watching levy’s “couple stuff” on his snap all day.
8/10 starting stare, he transferred his anger through his stare
Gotta give it a 9/10 saw a lot of determination in this one
could've been a longer, I'm giving a 7.5/10 for this one
why tf is bro angry? he's milking Magnus for money
Nah the head tilt is low-key playful, I'm giving it a 9/10
Maybe he's angru cuz u gave him 9
Magnus has a lot of respect for Firouzja, and shows it by giving 100% against him every time. Fun to see these two play.
As opposed to? Show me a game where he gave less than his all please.

Not infrequently is the case in youth/high school athletic tournaments as well (e.g., softball, baseball, basketball)

Bro how this two always get the craziest games, it always makes me sure why Magnus said he wanted to defend his title only against Alireza

Bro hes just built different 😂
Makes sense cuz of the age card. Magnus gets more time to think and show his skill in rapid
So being good at chess is an advantage when playing chess? Genius.
It's because Magnus shows up late. Doesn't matter as much in rapid as blitz.😄
So being better at Rapid is an advantage in Rapid? Wow. Never would've known.

Credit to Alireza; he was so close in every game, and he might be able to beat Magnus in the future
