Reagan cut taxes for the Rich, increased taxes on the Middle Class - Ronald Reagan is loved by conservatives and was loved by big business throughout his presidency and there's a reason for it. When Reagan came into office in January of 1981, the top tax rate was 70%, but when he left office in 1989 the top tax rate was down to only 28%. As Reagan gave the breaks to all his rich friends, there was a lack of revenue coming into the federal government. In order to bring money back into the government, Reagan was forced to raise taxes eleven times throughout his time in office. One example was when he signed into law the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982. Reagan raised taxes seven of the eight years he was in office and the tax increases were felt hardest by the lower and middle class.
As Reagan cut taxes for the wealthy, the government was left with less money to spend. When Reagan came into office the national debt was $900 billion, by the time he left the national debt had tripled to $2.8 trillion.
In 1986, a group of Americans were being held hostage by a terrorist group with ties to Iran. In an attempt to free the hostages, Ronald Reagan secretly sold arms and money to Iran. Much of the money that was received from the trade went to fund the Nicaragua Contra rebels who were in a war with the Sandinista government of Nicaragua. When the scandal broke in the Untied States it became the biggest story in the country, Reagan tried to down play what happened, but never fully recovered.
The attacks on 9/11 by al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden brought new attention to international terrorism. All of a sudden, Americans coast to coast wore their American flag pins, ate their freedom fries and couldn't wait to go to war with anyone who looked like a Muslim. What Americans didn't realize was that the same group that attacked the United States on 9/11 was funded by Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Prepping for a possible war with the Soviet Union, Ronald Reagan spent billions of dollars funding the Islamist mujahidin Freedom Fighters in Afghanistan. With billions of American dollars, weapons and training coming their way, the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden took everything they were given and gave it back to the United States over a decade later in the worst possible way imaginable.
When Ronald Reagan came into office 1981, unemployment was at 7.5%. After Reagan cut taxes for the wealthy, he began raising taxes on the middle and lower class. Corporations started to ship more jobs out of the United States while hiring cheap foreign labor in order to make a bigger profit. While corporations made billions, Americans across the country lost their jobs. As 1982 came to a close, unemployment was nearly 11%. Unemployment began to drop as the years went on, but the jobs that were created were low paying and barely helped people make ends meet. The middle and lower class had their wages nearly frozen as the top earners saw dramatic increases in salary.

The sad truth is that living standards have been declining for the past thirty years. There's not much of a middle class anymore. I see how I raised my children and how they're living now and I can already see a major difference in living standards. Yes they both have plasma TVs, laptops, two cars, video cameras and other creature comforts and they owe tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt and student loans. When I ask them why they have run up so much debt they tell me that they couldn't afford those other things otherwise. And therein is the main difference. Apart from a mortgage and a car payment, my wife and I had very little personal debt and that was true for most people my generation. And the reason why they can't afford those items is because real wages in the US have declined considerably in the US over the past 30 years. Now some of you will tell me "Well if they didn't own those things, they wouldn't be in debt right now". But they're not alone. How many of you also owe ungodly amounts of money? This is why I say living standards have declined. Most people today have to borrow in order to maintain the type of middle-class lifestyle my generation enjoyed. Both parties are to blame for this decline. And sadly, I don't see it getting any better.
Yes, sir, Dennis Nayland Smith!!! Unlijke wayyyyy too many, you look, you see, you analyse and you make an honest assessment of the situation. Boy! Good to meet you.
Awesome in it's power,. Cuomo was not just a powerful orator. The content of the speech does bring tears to the eyes. He would have made a good President. But, a President has to seize an opportunity, take his destiny. Mario didn't. He held back, and lost the chance to get to the Oval Office.
I know. I read your comment just as I was thinking to myself how much he sounded like Al Pacino in that movie. On a side note, I do miss him and am glad his son followed in his footsteps.
I loved this Italian Catholic, American. What an ideal American whether you liked his politics or not. He welcomed and promoted diversity and argument and discussion. Sorry to see you go.
Mario Cuomo articulated exactly what I believe. Sadly the comments are still painfully true. God help us and let us all do our part. Thank you Mario Cuomo!
It's great to hear this speech again, and to hear from a politician who speaks with intelligence and compassion. Anyone who can listen to this speech and only spew hatred in response is not really hearing it, and probably came here with their mind made up to hate it before listening to a word, just because of who the speaker is.
Spectacular! A strong, sharp yet intelligent rebuke of Reagan and a passionate delineation of what the Democratic Party stands for! No one was better at standing up to Reagan and seeking to unite all Americans. He was also the first to intelligently explain his opposition to abortion and its place even as a pro choice politician.
A great statesman and orator. This was my first "Obama" moment back in my 20s. Even if you don't agree with him ideologically, at least honor his service and patriotism. We can disagree and still be civilized. Rest in peace, sir. Your contribution to society will be remembered.
According to a Reuters article I have... in 1982, New York was host to 88 of America's Fortune 500 companies. By the time we kicked him out in 1994, we were down to 53... a 40% loss. He raised taxes on utilities. He got mad at truck drivers who fueled up in Pennsylvania or Ohio and didn't pay the higher New York fuel tax. Tax, tax tax.... He was big on talk. He was also big on taxes. New York does not miss you Mario.
Wonderfully moving speech and terribly sad how it could be given today and be totally relevant. He was a great representative for all of us Italian-Americans. RIP Mario Cuomo.
I've said it before, and i'll say it again==="one the greatest speeches this world has ever heard,by one of the greatest, most brilliant men====Mario Cuomo====i believe in you,M.C.===always"
Im not a Liberal bu this is by far one of the best political speeches i have ever come across. Cuomo is a gifted orator.....no doubt that if the Democrats had of nominated Cuomo over Mondale in 84 Reagan would of had some competition and something to worry about.
This speech shows how less can be much more. Think of our current politicians; they would take forty minutes to articulate what Governor Cuomo says in less than eight. Unbelievable. He really knew how to connect with an audience.
If Mario Cuomo gave this incredible speech before the primary system he would have walked away with the Democratic nomination in 1984. He might completed FDR’s vision of a fair and compassionate society. Guaranteed jobs, housing, health care and college education.
He saw it going in the wrong direction. Unfortunately it took some 30 years for majority to see that there is not such thing called trickle down economics.
Trickle Down Economics (TDE) is a pejorative term; a more accurate way to describe the issue is a free market; when producers are freed from the machinations of state (which is all that taxation and regulation really are) benefits accrue to all (but notably to owners of capital); politicians are reluctant to understand, let alone embrace, the notion of the liberty of the individual; they are too addicted to using the vacuum cleaner of State to enrich their friends and punish their enemies.
moneybagzz Yup. Dat is basically it if you r to describe what the problem is; things have been left to free market instead of people making it work for them. The thing that "the electorate" bought at that time and some still do is tho the trickle down theory of Reganomics which says that those who r at the top of the wealth ladder will create jobs if they are have more money in their pocket and the increased demand for jobs will not only provide jobs to the rest but increase their wages and living standards. Basically money will flow from the top to bottom of the economic ladder, in that sense, and only in that sense, money trickles down, is the theory. Except that middle class money has only trickled up to the wealthiest and trickled down to China. The promise of so called improved quality of life as the result of free market is never valid because the cost of living depends on the total amount of $ in the society, in other words, your share of wealth in the society determines how affordable your living is in a closed system. As those at the top of the economic ladder strive to gain more share for their improved life, it nanuturally follows that the share for the bottom declines and so does the quality of life for them. Compounding that false belief of free market leading to improved quality of life for the bottom is globalization of finance. In the 80's most available money used to be invested in US and other countries where citizens also invested in the US. Today a lot more is invested in emerging markets where citizens don't invest back in the US at least to the same degree, for greater ROI. The very assumption behind Reganomics was that the investors would invest their money in US job creation. That foundation has already crumbled. And though it was much less visible, it was already starting to crumble during the Reagan Presidency.

Actually I am going to Community college before I transfer. I was just talking about the idea of helping students get a good education so that they can compete in the global market without being straddled with debt. I am all for the working class. They are the ones who build the buildings and make this nation great. We should ensure that All Americans have a shot at the American dream
Look, I know we've reached a pretty sad state of affairs in our land. And our relationships with one another and our fellow citizens are known more by their divisions than by their unity. In the pit of our stomachs, we all sense that there has been a great loss, that things are not as they should or could be. We are not what some folks believe: a nation of followers. We know that is not the truth because, to state the truth plainly, there really are no true leaders that could be followed. Want to hear what a leader really sounds like, an example within memory of most of you reading this? Then listen to this -- a bitter-sweet, yet stark, reminder of what we don't have to look up to or forward to. This is an endangered, if not already extinct, species of moral political consciousness that requires our protection, cultivation and support. We need to remember that we can always be better than what we are in our loss. And that we are only lost when we have stopped searching for the way out. So, listen, and see yourself saying in your heart and out loud what you are hearing. (JdeCP) th-cam.com/video/kOdIqKsv624/w-d-xo.html
How incredible it is, that nearly a quarter century has passed since this speech, yet it could be delivered, nearly verbatim, now and it would apply, perhaps more so. This is the fire that is needed in Denver, in hopes of waking up enough people about Grampy McSame's policies, before it's too late.
Compassion,Truth, and Integrity always apply===this speech, one of the greatest of all time,is truly timeless and forever important(and allow me to defend my thought)=it is timeless and always important because it is not only made of great, true words; it is delivered straight from the heart, from a sincere, great man of the people, who forever remains true to the people, and true to himself==Mario Cuomo==1 of my heroes==God Bless You,Mario, and God Bless America=Forever
HANDS DOWN....the best political orator of my lifetime! God bless him and rest in peace Gov . Cuomo! Thank you for your service to the State of NY. RIP!
There was very little chance of him being elected in the 1984-92 time period when he was a viable candidate. He would have done better than Mondale or Dukakis did, but never would have beaten Reagan in 1984 or Bush in '88 when he was basically running for Reagan's third term. Even in 1992, the country's mood was still very conservative. If you think about it, Clinton as President was as conservative as a lof of Republicans--he was the one who signed Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the Defense of Marriage Act, and balanced the budget. And he cheated on his wife all the time like his foil Newt Gingrich did. The country's mood was still so conservative, even in New York, that Cuomo was voted out of office in 1994. Timing is everything when you're trying to become President. Mario Cuomo's political peak came at a time when he was not an electable candidate in a national election. I think he knew that, and it's why he never ran.
John Cate Mario Cuomo represents my final association with Democrat socialism. Once he made the decision not to run for the presidency, I abandoned my antiquated partisan alliances, expanded my political awareness and adopted more reliable and sensible principles. Even though I do not look at Mario Cuomo the same way I did in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I still have to admit, he certainly could deliver an emotionally stirring speech.
I remember the speech well on TV back in the mid 80s. It was the first Presidential election I participated in at 19. Great orator and he truly lived his Catholic faith vs giving lip service.
I was only ten when he gave this speech...don't remember it in its entirety! But,I'll tell you all this...I remember he gave a speech, and gave it his all! He put his big heart into it! At a time, when Reagan was real popular, Mario Cuomo put a little kink in his armor with this electrifying speech! You will always be missed...Governor! RIP (1932-2015)!
Mario Cuomo is not only a great man, but he is also one of the greatest orators we've had in a long time. If he would've run in 88, he would have won, since he wouldn't have been as lackluster as Dukasis.
I remember watching this live as a 26 YO and cheering at the TV afterwards! I wanted to look it up today so I could post the link to FB. The GOP wants to somehow want to believe that government plays no role, that it's all about bootstraps and desire. I readily admit they are factors - there are some who will not pull their weight. But there are some who are only concerned for themselves and see no advantage in helping others so they can help pull the weight of society.
THIS IS WHY I AM PROUD TO BE A REPUBLICAN. 17 MILLION JOBS CREATED FROM 1982-1988. I LOVED PRESIDENT REAGAN. I LIVED IN THOSE YEARS AND I REMEMBER HOW PATHETIC CARTER WAS. 49 STATE LANDSLIDE-HARDLY DESPAIR!
This is truly a great moment in history, I felt the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Bless you that posted this. I wish our politicians would speak and address the American people like this today.
Andrew Cuomo is just like his father. Andrew speak so eloquently and very intelligent just like his father, Mario Cuomo was a good person and governor.
This good governor, this man who gave his life to public life, he was one of very few that stood the test of time, he gave it his all. While it's true nothing much has changed since this speech but he laid it all on the line. God bless you Governor and RIP

one of the finest speeches of the century. Thank you Mario Cuomo for speaking up and telling the truth
Delighted to have met Governor Mario Cuomo and Matilda Cuomo at the first Family Support Conference in New York State. Both believed in families, in the role of state government and the non-profit sector, and the role of communities to make better futures from education to homes to good wages and child care. Thank you!! Julie Ann Racino August 2017
RIP Mario. Greatest speech I ever heard.
Back then....this Governor seem like a shining star. And his 2 sons are also shining stars. His daughter are too. Italian immigrants who worked hard to be where they are. Americans should learn from this family. The Governor speaks very well. l see the Carter's....so young and vibrant back then.
Powerful speech Mr. Governor....powerful....but where are we now 2023.....America is great, but how great when there are homeless rising. Gas rising....mental health issues everywhere....and so much more that needs attention. We can only pray and let the man upstairs take our troubles away......and make the world go around again.....
yeah but u know bro, I hate to sound like an asshole or anything but, Mario Cuomo was actually a bad Governor of New York during most of the 80s and Early 90s, also, during Cuomo's governorship, Cuomo raised taxes and let crime loose in the streets and made education bad, why do u think that Mario Cuomo lost his re election for a 4th Term against George Pataki back in 1994. besides, The Democratic Party was always shit and it will be shit for the rest of its eternal life, ok 2 give u some credit there are some or a few Democrats that can be chill but not as much, also, its the Democrats fault for the high gas prices and high taxes, plus its their own fault that they made America crap, so if I were u rn, I'd stop watching The Fake news media and start watching Newsmax/InfoWars.
I heard this speech when I was 22 and never forgot it. Rest in Peace after a life of great and inspired service and leadership to this country.
He was the only governor I knew upon arriving in this beautiful state. There will never be another Mario Cuomo. Not even Andrew measures up. RIP.

#2016 Dnc brought me here. powerful speech
His son is clearly being guided by this great man. Proud to be a New Yorker
Are you still proud lmfao?
Brilliant speech, a very honorable man
God bless Gov. Cuomo. Sadly, this speech is still relevant.
Yes!
Francine Dozois Good to meet you too Francine. I only wish it was under happier circumstances.
Yeah, me too. But, hey! we will win this thing IF WE ALL STAND TOGETHER. Keep your eyes open, buddy. :-)
I wish your sons were fighters for the little guy like you were.
Thank you Mario.
Awesome in it's power,. Cuomo was not just a powerful orator. The content of the speech does bring tears to the eyes. He would have made a good President. But, a President has to seize an opportunity, take his destiny.
Mario didn't. He held back, and lost the chance to get to the Oval Office.
The tone in his voice in parts of this speech does sound a lot like the way Michael Corleone spoke to Senator Geary in The Godfather II.
Hell of speech and I still remember it certainly!
Mario Cuomo articulated exactly what I believe. Sadly the comments are still painfully true. God help us and let us all do our part. Thank you Mario Cuomo!
Gosh! He would have made a wonderful President!
One of the greatest, most honest men who happened to be a Governor. I so appreciated Gov. Mario Cuomo and I will miss his presence.
Oh please
Wonderfully moving speech and terribly sad how it could be given today and be totally relevant. He was a great representative for all of us Italian-Americans. RIP Mario Cuomo.
rip mario. you were right. but time here is so very brief.
I've said it before, and i'll say it again==="one the greatest speeches this world has ever heard,by one of the greatest, most brilliant men====Mario Cuomo====i believe in you,M.C.===always"
I'm Italian and I want a man like Mario Cuomo to rule our country.
I remember this
Im not a Liberal bu this is by far one of the best political speeches i have ever come across.
This is just an a part of the speech, . . the actual DNC keynote speech was longer.
Gov. Cuomo would do well to absorb the lesson of this speech by Gov. Cuomo
What a speech ! Go Andrew !! For Him and for all Americans !!!
If Mario Cuomo gave this incredible speech before the primary system he would have walked away with the Democratic nomination in 1984. He might completed FDR’s vision of a fair and compassionate society. Guaranteed jobs, housing, health care and college education.
Best speech given for a convention.
He saw it going in the wrong direction. Unfortunately it took some 30 years for majority to see that there is not such thing called trickle down economics.
Trickle Down Economics (TDE) is a pejorative term; a more accurate way to describe the issue is a free market; when producers are freed from the machinations of state (which is all that taxation and regulation really are) benefits accrue to all (but notably to owners of capital); politicians are reluctant to understand, let alone embrace, the notion of the liberty of the individual; they are too addicted to using the vacuum cleaner of State to enrich their friends and punish their enemies.
moneybagzz
You should actually read Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations."
moneybagzz Yup.
And though it was much less visible, it was already starting to crumble during the Reagan Presidency.
moneybagzz I mean to reply to u haha
Everything he said is true and absolutely nothing has changed.
amazing speech
Inspiring. We need him today.
one of the greatest speeches this world has ever heard,by one of the greatest, most brilliant men......Mario Cuomo.-----i believe in you,M.C.------always!
Absolutely the best political speech on the past 60 years.
as a Syracuse soon and a New York state resident we have had Cuomo Family Medical Offices ever since I can remember two Bobbies he done a very good job keep going mister Cuomo
I'm watching it during the Coronavirus Pandemic....It gives me hope that our next President will feel this way!
No teleprompter, yes guts. This speech should be broadcast through every city's ghetto in America every day, until too many people stand up to stop.
One of the best explanations about the differences between the policies of the Democratic and Republican Parties. Makes me proud to be a Yellow Dog!
Awesome speech. As relevant now as it was then. And always will be.
Actually I am going to Community college before I transfer. I was just talking about the idea of helping students get a good education so that they can compete in the global market without being straddled with debt. I am all for the working class. They are the ones who build the buildings and make this nation great. We should ensure that All Americans have a shot at the American dream
He looks like Kevin Spacey
And maybe just as much of a phony.
A great orator and humanitarian. Yet, how timely his remarks.
Nearly 40 years later - we still have facing the same issues.
Everything changes, nothing changes.
It's scary how his words 27 years ago...are STILL true today.
DAMN RIGHT, MARIO. You got it, perfectly nailed... and, 40 years BEFORE the rest of us. WOW. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, MARIO CUOMO.

Sadly, Cuomo's speech is creepily relevant. :) The economics, the homeless and the unemployment all relevant today.
This is the first time I have ever heard this and all I can say is wow. The sad thing about this that it's 2020 and we still have the 2 Americas.
HANDS DOWN....the best political orator of my lifetime! God bless him and rest in peace Gov . Cuomo! Thank you for your service to the State of NY. RIP!
Genius at work.
Why hasn't this man run for President yet? This speech still affects me all these years later, and I'm 20.
Why didn't he become our President?
+VoltaireG
Somebody made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
That's precisely why I chose the signature line from "The Godfather". The were innuendoes from others about alleged ties to organized crime figures.
John Cate Your comment is appreciated.
A SPECTACULARLY POWERFUL SPEECH BY MARIO CUOMO.
I remember the speech well on TV back in the mid 80s. It was the first Presidential election I participated in at 19. Great orator and he truly lived his Catholic faith vs giving lip service.
Truly lived his Catholic faith?? He was pro-abortion.
A great, great speech from a remarkable man
I was only ten when he gave this speech...don't remember it in its entirety! But,I'll tell you all this...I remember he gave a
speech, and gave it his all! He put his big heart into it! At a time, when Reagan was real popular, Mario Cuomo put a little
kink in his armor with this electrifying speech! You will always be missed...Governor! RIP (1932-2015)!
Mario Cuomo is not only a great man, but he is also one of the greatest orators we've had in a long time. If he would've run in 88, he would have won, since he wouldn't have been as lackluster as Dukasis.
Thanks Mr Cuomo, you made both the towns of Tramonti and Nocera proud of you
He will be remembered.
I see it everyday. People wallowing in streets on the sidewalks homeless and addicted; mostly women beaten down.
49 STATE LANDSLIDE-HARDLY DESPAIR!
a last great dem...
This speech is F'ing timeless. I was born after this was even given. While 84 was possibly the biggest landslide in history, has there been an better Keynote? Obama in 04 was great but over 30 years later, nothing in this speech is dated, it is perfect.
Listen and learn.
god bless the ones that cant afford help and I hope you do feel comfort in your future
RIP Governor Cuomo. One of the best Democrats.. ever. :)
As great a speech as you will ever hear.
I love listening to Mario cuomo
Not for honor not for glory not for profit but for love!!!!
I remember crying listening to this speech on TV in '84. I loved Mario. What a shame that THIS party died! What a shame!
I cried when i heard this speech as part of a song by Ascent to Everest....truly inspiring speech
The world lost a great one yesterday. R.I.P.
