Interesting way to solve that problem that may last longer than plumbers putty. Plumbers putty is more a sealant than it is an adhesive that requires periodic replacement as it ages and gets squeezed out. Good video and thanks for the mention.
I agree on the maintenance. I've had plumbers putty last over 10+ years on my other motorhome but that one had metal strainers. Many plastics have a very low surface energy (something I learned doing VHB tape experiments.) and any type of adhesive or sealant on low surface energy surfaces don't do well unless they are made for it. These plastic strainers definitely had very low surface energy. I think that was the true root cause. Unfortunately I've seen several different non compatible materials being used together on many different types of RV brand (not just Winnebago).
My daughter said Winnebago is going to be mad at me lol. It's not just them. All manufacturers need to do better on proper installation methods. I'm sure it's not on purpose, as it just creates more warranty issues. I don't think their is enough check and balance in manufacturer and procurement.
@@rvlifediy All of the manufacturers need to look at their quantity and pay their workers better and STOP looking at their profit sheets! People deserve BETTER and this is why so many Europeans (if they can afford them) go for better made RV motorhomes etc. The same "Ye olde story" etc If you can afford it then pay the EXTRA! But so many have paid a lot ALREADY for their RV's and the quality is now turning to mere "plastic"! The consumers NEED to say: -No! And keep making more videos and contact the manufacturers and "encourage" them to do better etc. ☺ I'm about to buy my fourth RV and I have learned(-ing) STILL more and this is why I prefer the 2nd hand Used market after a good official independent Pre-Purchase Report etc.
@@rvlifediy Exactly! Doing it right the first time would save them millions in warranty rework. I have seen very little evidence that engineers are involved in any part of there design and build process.
@@gereshomeE We shopped a lot before buying our first motorhome and we saw a lot of poor quality from all of the manufacturers. Winnebago consistently had better quality. Gently used with a reputable RV inspection is the way to go. We found ours using RVTrader and bought our 2019 View in June of 2019 from a private party. It has never seen the inside of an RV dealership since we have owned it. I do my own repairs because it is more cost effective and I know it will be done right. We have heard too many horror stories about RV Dealerships. But the chassis maintenance and repairs I leave to the experts 😀.
@@MilesAcrossUSA THANK YOU for your kind reply, Sir. Your recent experience with the Mercedes Dealership was OUTSTANDINGLY excellent! I love your repair videos and Winnebago View/Navions BUT I need a Four Season RV and I have decided to go 2nd Hand (Used) hence a Used Winnebago View would have been perfect. Safe travels you two! ☺
Thank you for all your work documenting these fixes and upgrades, I have only watched a few of your videos so far, I see you have many on the Winnebago 24D which I will make my way through. I have subscribed to your channel. We just took delivery of our 2024 24D and having this resource gives me a good reference library for what to expect. I am very comfortable tackling these type of fixes and I would rather do my own work on the RV rather than relying on the dealer even for warranty work, if the job is not too involved. We just drove across Canada after picking up our Motorhome in Toronto, back to our home in Langley BC, it was a great trip, learning about the RV as we went. We stayed at a few Walmart's and Costco parking lots on the way, and everything worked out great, I was concerned about the house batteries, as It's suggested that you don't run your genset while parked in their lot overnight, no issues as the batteries were still good by morning. We had a few minor issues, took a while to sort out all the rattles and noises coming from the coach while driving, had a few cupboard push buttons come off and found out if tightened too much they bind, I will replace them all with a metal ones when i find a better unit, also need to figure out what's up with the table for the dinette, if the top is tightened down hard, the table rotates by itself while driving, if left a bit loose it stays put but it creaks loudly. The big discovery was fuel economy while using cruise control, not sure why but I can get 3L/100KM (about 2MPG US) better when not using CC, average speed for the day about 90 KMhr. (56MPH) I don't usually use CC but assumed it would return better fuel economy numbers but not so in the 24D. Overall we love the 24D, found the beds to be very comfortable and the driving experience was awesome, still lots to learn as we get through all the manuals and online videos, so thanks for adding to the knowledge base and making owning this RV a better experience. David.
I think I have a video on that table. The squeaking may be from the leg going into the leg mount as well. If that is the case, you can jus spray some lubricant (or wrap some tape around the leg before inserting into the mount). I didn't have any issues with the cruise control and mileage. If you are using cruise going down hills, it will automatically hit the brakes a lot to slow you down. Your mileage will get better as the engine breaks in. 1st impression of the Sprinter driving is just like you explained, but you will learn later that suspension mods will likely be required once the newness wears off. Enjoy your 24D.
@@rvlifediy Thanks for the response, we were fortunate that our sprinter came with the Super Steer Suspension upgrade kit #1from Henderson, I bought it new from the dealer and a customer had the kit installed but after having it installed, they changed their mind and went for a larger Motorhome, we negotiated to have it included without any extra cost to us when we bought the MH. Super Steer Kit #1 includes the rear shocks and upgraded sway bar but didn't include the Koni front struts/shocks which I intend to install soon, after watching your video on that. Cheers, David.
Thanks for another great video Craig. I watched the MilesAcrossUSA video before as well (love their channel too 😉). Are there no similar plumbers putty products designed for plastics?
I'm not aware of any mainstream putty that is compatible but perhaps something is out there somewhere. I doubt any of the RV manufacturers would go through the expense of a customized product. I think there is lack of engineering review on these. I don't think any mechanical engineer would specify putty on plastic fixtures. 🤔
@@rvlifediy so it's either swap the OEM plastic ones out for metal like MilesAcrossUSA and plumbers putty or silicone them semipermanent like you did? Good to know.
Yes I do inspections quite often. I had the back cap seam open up within the 1st 6 months and had to apply the winnebago roof sealant. All my roof radius sealant was replaced as well after 1 year but I had the dealer do that.
Thanks your videos are great. My main concern with the Winnebago is maintaining the roof sealant. We looked at Tiffin Wayfarer and Entegra Qwest...but the View just made more sense if you have kids.
@@kunhuor that is the reason we got the View with the floor plan and space that works for 4. The roof won't be any worse to maintain than the Tiffin (besides the radius). The major downside of the roof is having 0 trusses on a Winnebago motorhome so I walk on the roof carefully. The roof radius can be fixed right away if you apply a layer of caulking over the existing. The existing radius can crack from UV. It's more a glue than a caulk and applying a layer of outdoor caulking over it will protect from UV. The main roof top sealant is good and silicone based. No issues with that and much better than dicor. Winnebago rotated from black to white roof sealant depending on availability. Mine was black sealant unfortunately and I wished they used white instead. You will be fine with your Winnebago. Just keep up the maintenence and fix the common area problems.

Put the drain pipe back on so you can turn the drain nut without the whole drain turning.
