      +Airplaneviewer Thanks so much for watching! PDX is a great airport and now having flown to/from it a few times I have to say it's one of the better ones. Great ramp views to be had for sure.

    It's like a Scimitar mayhem in the video. So many of them! Love it!!

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NihselAviation Quite popular nowadays it seems with certain carriers..... however I wonder if the cost to repair the ones that get knocked off by ramp operations outweighs the savings that the cause aerodynamically.

    15:20 - 17:00 is without doubt the most unnecessarily long and convoluted pushback I have ever seen.

      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doctors2Advocate lol! I was raising an eyebrow while filming it.... I've seen some pretty crazy pushbacks though so I shouldn't have been surprised...

    Great Portland airport traffic.We have to get used to these winglets.They are Boeing's choice for their aircrafts and they really look nice.Awesome close up views Jay.

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Yannis Moutafis Thanks, Yannis! I do like the look but I have to wonder if the cost of replacing them after they've been knocked off to due careless or accidental ground operations is worth the aerodynamic efficiency savings.

    • @flyingdentist
      @flyingdentist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jay I don't know about the cost of these parts but I believe that if an accident happens at any wingtip or winglet or sharklet will be really expensive to repeir or replace them no matter what.

    Another brilliant video! :) British Airways will start daily 787-9 flights to San Jose CA in May and I'm certain they'll also come to Portland with their 787-9s. Turkish Airlines still has room for US Expansion but I'm surprised they've not ordered 787-9s and A350s. Their postponed direct flights to Australia could become nonstop if they have the 787-9s and A350s to boost their long-haul fleet. As for Qatar Airways, they've already begun daily A350 flights to Boston and I'm convinced they'll also fly A350s to Orlando since arch rival Emirates flies their 777s there. Norwegian Long Haul could Launch 787 flights to Portland soon. Icelandair do seasonal 757 flights.

    At 7:00...those planes have a weird design don't know if I have ever seen some like that...but it sure looks like they have a lot of them in Portland Oregon

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sheri-myvideos These are Dash 8 Q400s, a larger and more efficient version of the early Dash 8 models. Horizon uses them quite a lot for shorter hops and other such as United Express use them for certain routes as well.

    • @Sheri45myvideos

    Awesome video Jay!!! I love aviation and plane spotting!! I am thinking about making my own plane spotting channel...What do you guys think?

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jason Huval Would be cool no doubt! It doesn't have to be a big production though if you don't want it to be. This channel I have here was meant to be something much smaller and has ended up growing to becoming what it is.

    • @huvaljason
      @huvaljason 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would like it to be big at some point. I have been wanting to do something like it. I just need to get some decent camera gear and such!

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Huval All you need is a good camera an hours of practice. That's all I use... no tripod, no fancy lens, no nothing....

    • @huvaljason
      @huvaljason 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jay's O'HareAviation Plane Spotting HD what type of gear do you use? I work for an airline so getting around wont be to hard lol. Just need some ideas for camera gear and such.

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Huval Sony HX400v is my favorite. I use no tripod... simply hours of practice trying to keep my hands steady.

  • @MajorIdontcare
    @MajorIdontcare 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I assume at 16:43 they pushed it back the wrong way?
    And I also love the Q-400 series, but I don't know why

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MajorIdontcare hmmm... perhaps. Not sure. That certainly was a pretty complicated pushback compared to to others I've seen in the same parking situation. LOVE those props as well.

  • @Russell1971
    @Russell1971 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm very surprised Alaska/Horizon is not docking their Q400's at jetways. United Express does that with theirs at Newark and at other terminals. United EX Q400's are treated just like mainline jets.

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leslie Smith This whole area I filmed in is part of a section dedicated to the Q400 operation.... pretty interesting that in a place like Portland with all that rain there are't jetways, yes, have to agree.

  • @TigerBalm9000
    @TigerBalm9000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jay,
    What kind of equipment do you use to film all of these videos? Its quality and clarity is top notch.
    Are you using a mono pod or is this just free hand? How do you keep it so steady while filming?

    • @LeshVarg

    Jay have you ever caught an accident while planespotting, just wondering

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jaden Desveaux A good question. No, I never have. I have been present for emergencies from time to time.... airplane incidents and especially accidents are really rare. I usually don't film emergencies unless I see there has been aircraft damage. There isn't a reason to film an emergency and hype it up with a flashy title if there's no outside difference from a normal landing. Even if I did film an accident, the footage would likely be uploaded for use by the NTSB, FAA and other authorities and certainly not monetized. I don't believe in gaining an upper hand from someone else's misfortune in that way.
      I was present when this happened though.... th-cam.com/video/KDgvWa-EbbE/w-d-xo.html. I filmed it and then later pulled it down for various reasons.

    Thanks for your look at PDX for us. Charming. I am glad that Alaska Airlines is serious about doing something more than just portraying Portland as a city that has nothing better to do than to try those right wing slugs soon. I sure hope their new found sense of advertising that area would show that a six million dollar damage to Federal property is not the only thing going on there.

      It is nice if you don't mind sharing the civilian passenger and cargo flights with an air national guard post that is used. People hate it post 2009 since the mob of casino goers have reduced to a trickle and Alaska's offer of day trips to San Jose was a real advert grab when it came out. Oh yes we have Jet Blue hit JFK for us once a day too.
