Inspector Wexford - A Sleeping Life

- Taken from the VHS cover:
The body of Rhoda Comfrey is found on a lonely path beside a canal. Detective Chief Inspector Reg Wexford is assigned to the enquiry but the dead, in this case, tell no tales. He has only her name and a 20 year old photograph and , despite vigorous investigation on his part, little materialises about her which could lead to the arrest of her killer. In frustration, Wexford goes to France, his spiritual home, where he meets his old friend, Commissioner Pierre Laquin. A meeting of minds brings the clues which expose the motives, the method and the murderer.
Love it. Wexford’s on the ferry going over to France and is reading a Barbara Vine novel, who, is Ruth Rendell wring Under another name. Clever!
Watching the Wexford series is a breath of fresh air & relief from all the violence in most action movies. Love them, thank you for posting them Paul Goddard.
😊
This must have been a difficult episode to make. The subtlety of it, without revealing the truth, while giving small clues all the way. Brilliant!
I totally agree that was worthy of Agatha Christie
So many virtually unknown actors who are amazing, it goes to show what a scam Hollywood is.
Look! It's Hugo from Vicar of Dibley! Oh I do miss that show! And I miss Alice. RIP 😢
Thank you Paul for these wonderful uploads!
So great to see a VoD fan!
🤗
Alice was absolutely brilliant.
How many shows nowadays show a happily married middle-aged couple? I absolutely love seeing Reg's marriage and how happy they are together! :D
The really cute thing is that George Baker and Louie Ramsay fell in love when they were playing Wexford and Dora and got married for real!
In his younger days G. Baker wouldn’t have chosen Dora.
But with 60++ men after having had many adventures
they get tired and appreciate gentle housewives. 😴
@@lindaflowerpower8498 I don't think he wouldn't have chosen her, he just happened to be with someone else. They were the same sort of age, and actually had been friendly for years. His wife died and Louie had divorced her husband, so they serendipitously came together.
@@laurawilson8881 I never knew that!
Lindsey, thank you for referring to those of us in our sixties, as "middle aged", and mot "seniors"! You've made my day!
I love being able to watch these again. A beautiful respite from the ultra saturated, over-directed noise that's been churned out for the last 20 years.
You can say that again.
Did anyone notice the young Dolores Umbridge? Binge watching these movies right now. Beautiful, thrilling, love the twists. Thank You Paul for uploading these.
Imelda Staunton 😉
A small thing I noticed, when Wexford was on the train reading, the book was by Barbara Vine aka Ruth Rendell
I noticed that too 🙂 Nice touch!
Yez....
Since I watched one episode, I've been binge watching. No Netflix. Thanks for the uploads.
That's nice to know these uploads of Wexford have been beating Netflix 😀
same here 😊 I've heard of this detective before, but never watched it and now I'm ready on this ep 👍👍
Me 3, seen the odd one before, the plethora of uploads available now is fantastic!!
Another brilliant episode! Not crazier than the strange things that are happening in the world, right now. Most of the episodes deal with the day to day struggles, with the difficulties of being a human, not always easy to watch, and yet diving into these stories is such a wonderful way for escaping my own struggle... Sending my gratitude all the way from Israel. Thank you, Paul, for uploading so many great videos!
Love, love, love Rendall and George Baker. Always best twists..
@lisasim: What a lovely comment! You are so right. Love to you from us here in Europe. It's raining and blowing a gale (although not really cold), so we are thinking of the nice warm sunny weather you must be having in Israel!
Thank you Lisasim, I saw this message long ago and liked it, meaning to return and reply. I apologise this has only just happened. Running my business and the other work going on around me doesn't always make it easy to reply to everyone. This was such a lovely comment to read and I'm glad these Wexfords help you. Take care. 🙂
Totally agree , the writers deal with issues we can relate to ,
The beauty of story, it doesn’t matter what race, sex, nationality, they cross all boundaries.....some how this has been forgotten and we’ve let them divide us into caste systems.. My heart is breaking.
"Nothin' wrong with my hearing, or me marbles". I like this line from Nana.
21:05
Oh look at Reg and Dora dancing.... so lovely to depict a couple over 60 still in love and not caring who knows it!! Brilliant.
Oh his eyes Rove
Yeah, they got married in real life after both of them were widowed.
Thank you I do so enjoy these shows..Kwa Zulu Natal South Africa.
Me too. I'm with you on this one.

Thank you again, Paul, for this new episode. What a beautifully crafted series in every sense of the word. Great characters, great casting, great acting, and most importantly, a lot of witty, goodnatured humour. Murder mysteries should always include humour, otherwise they can be too dark and depressing (e.g. PD James). Another thing I like is the glimpse we get into Reg's and Mike's respective personal lives. The human element.
Humour..salt to make murder a more palatable adult nursery fable, distanced somewhat from dreary, stark and horrid truths.
Thank you so much, Paul. Your work has given all the Wexford fans a new lease on life. Many thanks again for this wonderful job. Regards from New Jersey. Cheers, Pat
I am hooked on this series…Best English Murder Mysteries, not so gory, more problem solving, than gore, which I enjoy, and love ❤️ the personal side stories ..Thank You, a GREAT respite from the political mess going on 🙏❤️🇺🇸🎄
Amen ❗️
I also think Inspector Allyn is this way too but vintage-set in 40s.
Best thing about this series for me is that sometimes it gets too complicated, so I skip over parts, and kind of figure it out; then over time, I'll go back to one of the episodes and watch it again--knowing the overall narrative, but get to enjoy the finer details. Brilliant--there's a reason I like film from the UK best !!
Do yu watch midsummer murders
@@michaeldevaney5728 I do! So much better than THE FILTH the Americans put out! So much more imagination as well!
I just came upon your channel How Wonderful!!! With the world today it is awesome to go back 40 years here in the US or across the pond!!! Thank You!!!!!!😁
Thank you ever so much, Mr Goddard. Very kind of you to upload another Wexford episode. Cheers, stay safe n healthy your end of the globe.
Thank you RoryAddict, I was a bit slow at replying to you. I'm putting time aside each morning to try and reply to as many as I can. Stay safe too.
@@paulgoddardThanks for the videos but if possible please record the sound louder, can always turn it down but when it's so low it makes it hard to hear for some of us.

Thank you Paul. The ending was raw and like so much of real life, unfinished, regretful, and uncertain.
This was brilliant. Thank you 🙏
I was a newly wed when this was first aired and I don’t remember many Wexford episodes. But now I am throughly enjoying them. They bring back lots of memories of England ( we emigrated to Canada in 2000)
So wonderful to see these.
I will watch every year or so and I'm always surprised at the endings...lmbo
Difficult to follow because of the low volume in quite a lot of the episode, but did hear enough to get the gist and the main story. Thanks for the upload
Do you have a speaker you can connect to? It's worth getting one.
@@nzsooz3884 Unfortunately not. thanks for the suggestion
Thank you so much for your time and patience Paul downloading this wonderful series’s you are a star 🌟 keep safe and well X
Thank you very very much Mr. Goddard for uploading these episodes of Ruth Rendell misteries with George Baker my favorite chief inspector and of course all the rest of the staff. THANKS AGAIN AND GOD BLESS. BTW I'VE SEEN ALL OF THEM SEVERAL TIMES AGAIN AND AGAIN.
Outstanding story! Well acted and directed. Great production values. Thank you for uploading it.
Oh man! Thank you Paul for upload. Was hoping to see some new/old episodes.
Thanks again.
Sorry for my slow reply. I'm glad you like these videos. I have uploaded a new Ruth Rendell. It's not a Wexford but I hope you enjoy it if you watch it. 🙂
Marvellous piece of detective work 👍,1:26 Mr Wexford reading his own character by Barbara Vine😁Thanku❤ Very intrigue case.
Thanks a lot for these uploads of one of my favorite crime dramas. And George Baker is brilliant as Reg Wexford along with the whole cast!
Paul, thank you so much for this episode. What a tragic ending to a tragic story. As in many of these cases, the guilty party is greatly to be pitied. I believe the police felt compassion too when making the arrest. Reg certainly did.
Great episode; really enjoy this series. Thank you for posting.
Thankyou for The Wexford Episodes.
Fine actors and great story lines from Ruth Rendell...
Hi! So grateful for such fab uploading! I can only say thank you, Paul! I watched all the episodes and the new ones are a present I didnt really expect!!!
Another one! Oh, my you are the absolute best. Thank you for these. I absolutely love watching these series.
Oh wow! Thank you Paul , I’m ready for this. I was just about to watch a film, but this will do nicely 👌👍😄
I'm really pleased. Thank you 😊

Love it brilliant program love Wexford stories don't make great things like this now.
seriously, Poirot and Foyle's War are both better than this.
@@barrystevenyoung4818 Apples and pears, but what is missing nowadays, is to let the story take its time and to let the characters develop.
Thank you so much for uploading!🌷
Thank you for uploading this wonderful shows.
I am new on board! THANK you for such great post. I shall, therefore, follow you in time. Cheers
Thank you for another brilliant quality upload. Wexford never disappoints. 🙏
Wexford said now women always use a splash of toilet water ha ha ha
Another blinder, thank you @Paul Goddard, these Wexford mysteries are a cracking watch..
Best wishes from Wales.
Thanks, Paul. I read this a few months ago and I loved it. The television series is great, though. Hope all is well with you. :)
What I really like is the slow unwrapping of all the layers, like peeling an onion.
That's a good way of putting it 😊
I love the description. And this standard of TV doesn't work these days, it's all dreck that panders to people with no attention span. I live that I can watch this and I have to really focus on it
Great episode. Thank you.
Timeless treasure. Thanks for sharing this. Regards from Iceland 🇮🇸
Thank you soooo much. Enjoying this series tremendously!!!! So glad I came across. Great job. Keep it up 👍
Thank you Mr Goddard! On this New Year’s Eve in San Diego, California we are under a major stay at home due to very high COVID-19 #’s. Your wonderful offerings are helping keep us sane!😊 Have a safe and healthy 2021 all.🙏🏻

Yes, Paul's Wexford videos are helping us all through it :-)
Thank very much Paul, greatly appreciated! Blessings!!
Thanks so much for the new episodes recently.... Love yhis series!!!
Paul I found this episode to be quite strange but excellent as always.
Simpler times when a person could just pop across the channel for the day & this was another 1 where I could hear Joe Jackson singing "down to London" in my mind. LoL. Thanks for all you do. Much love, Mark in Ohio !!!!
Um, very strange.
As far as I know, you can still pop across the channel or the North Sea for the day. Only not right now, of course, due to the corona virus.
Thank you Paul for uploading these episodes.
Me too. Perfect timing. I love these. Thank you very much.
Thanks for posting hope you find more do enjoy them great to crochet by

Thanks Paul for uploading this episode-hope you are doing well in your career!
Very well acted, and I really enjoy Ruth Randall’s books.
How marvelous! Complex Sensitive Beautifully filmed...

Thank you once again.🤗
I was so exited to see this one - just love Wexford xxx
On his way to France, Inspector Wexford reading a novel by Barbara Vine (Ruth Rendell)..that made me smile ☺️
Me too.
Made me smile too! A nice humorous touch by the producer or director (or whoever thought of it - may even have been George Baker himself!)
@@mfjdv2020 I think you’re right. It probably was George Baker. I love seeing those little added extras in a programme 😄
@@josephinemonahan915 so do I! Did you catch the little ad lib at (approximately)1:44:00 between Reg and Lionel in the pub? When they both start laughing?

Another really great episode!
I am enjoying this episode, thanks Paul, great stuff. I missed this one so I am grateful to see it here. We finally get a deeper insight into Sylvia's marriage troubles and Mike has yet to marry Jenny. Cheers from the heat wave in LONDON, Canada. August 14, 2020
Another very good story. ThankYou very much. 👍👍👍💙💜🤗
I’m really enjoying these movies as well! Thank you Paul Goddard! I really am thankful for this new (to me series) I absolutely love this series, as has already been said! Also been said- the acting is great and the plots sometimes has me gasping, for lack of a better word, at the twist and turns! My,my, my, my, my❗️I’m truly surprised by who actually did the deed!
Since I can’t stomach Netflix atm ,I’m watching stuff I watched with my mam.The picture isn’t great but really enjoying goitback to a time of great tv.Thankyou 🙂

So powerful.loved it. Thanks😘
Great Story. So well played alltogether. Thanks alot.
I find these shows so very relaxing. Inspector Frost as well 10/10. with subtitles ❤️🇦🇺
I love the part where Reg is lying in bed, asleep? and Dora comes up to him and he grabs her, pulls her onto the bed and kisses her. A real married couple.
Not like the one I know
Although they want you to THINK IT
NEXT
That and the dancing in the driveway in the beam of the headlights with the car radio turned up loud!
@@gtw4546 And I like the one where Dora is at the opened kitchen window and Reg comes up and talks with her. Charming couple.
The actors WERE a real life couple! 😊
It's hard to believe this was only 30 years ago. It seems like a decade or more earlier. Wexford's attitude, and that of his SIL, were very old-fashioned for 1989. Thanks for the upload.
And the daughter, telling her parents off! Very fuddy-duddy!
Reg isn't that old-fashioned. He's very tolerant and open-minded. Mike's the old-fashioned one! He's positively Victorian in his outlook. But he does mellow as time goes on. I reckon his marriage to Jenny does him a world of good.
@@mfjdv2020 I find them both incredibly old-fashioned, and I'm in my mid/late 60s. I was in my mid/late thirties when this show aired. I think they were meant to be old-fashioned, just one a little more than the other. Wexford because of age, showing a reluctant willingness to grow, and Mike because of disposition. But both were more old-fashioned than my mother was at the time.
@@IvyRoad in what way do you find them old-fashioned? (I agree that Mike is incredibly elderly in his outlook!)
@@mfjdv2020 I'm afraid I've forgotten the storyline now. I saw it some time ago.
Great show, first time watching
I love British mystery and spy thrillers. No one can do it better than the Brits; they absolutely reign supreme.
Thank you! We had seen all the others and I assumed that was the lot. And then, suddenly, this - a pleasant surprise. How ever did Ruth Rendell think-up such plots??!
Thanks so much! I love this show, never so this one!
My first time watching inspector Wexford what a great show 📺 I love it..
It was lovely to meet you Paul. What a nice surprise to see you on screen. Your friend Piers sound's nice and it's good now Wexford is popular in his country as well. I have watched these over and over again, thanks again Paul. Deb x

Rule # 1 for a woman getting off a bus and walking home in the dark. Do not laugh in the face of the person following you!
Seriously. She was being needlessly cruel to the one person who ever cared for her.
Or be alone on a dark footpath in first place.
Rule #1 for men: stop killing and raping women.
